Technology, Science and Capitalism
Thu, January 30, 2020 @ 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
$65 – $95An 8-week study
Convened by Fred Murphy and Steve Knight
This eight-week study group will consider the place and role of science and technology in the history and development of capitalism, addressing such questions as What is technology? Does technological change drive social change? Is technology independent of social relations? What are the consequences of “technological progress” under capitalism? What constraints does capitalism place on such progress? We will also examine current debates on labor and automation, digital information technology and “communicative capitalism,” and the role of science and technology in confronting climate change and other crises of the Earth system.
Online participation by Zoom teleconferencing can be arranged for mobility-challenged participants or those outside the New York City area.
FRED MURPHY and STEVE KNIGHT have co-led the MEP’s Ecosocialism Study Group since 2016. Both are active in DSA’s climate justice work.
