Marx, Nature and Capital: A Study Group

Tue, February 2, 2016 @ 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM

$75 – $95

An 8-week Session
Convened by Fred Murphy and Steve Knight
Tuesdays, February 2 through March 22
7:30-9:30 p.m.

This group will read and discuss works that bring Marxist theory to bear on the environmental crisis and climate change. While it is often asserted that Karl Marx cared only about industrial growth and the development of the productive forces, Marx’s Ecology by John Bellamy Foster reveals Marx’s deep interest in natural science and his lesser-known work on capitalist agriculture, philosophical naturalism, and evolutionary theory. Jason W. Moore’s Capitalism in the Web of Life offers a challenging new approach to the capital/nature relationship, grounded in Marxist economics and world-systems analysis.

Steve Knight is involved in eco-advocacy as a member of 350NYC, a GreenFaith Fellow working with faith communities, and a certified energy efficiency auditor for multifamily buildings. He has been interested in Marxian analysis and ecosocialism since 2004, when he studied Capital with David Harvey.

Fred Murphy studied and taught historical sociology at The New School and has traveled extensively in Latin America as a journalist. He is currently translating the memoirs of Hugo Blanco, a leader and activist in Peru’s peasant, indigenous and environmental movements since the 1950s.
