Adam Smith and ‘The Wealth of Nations’
Sat, January 25, 2025 @ 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
FreeJoin Russell Dale in reading and discussing the works of Adam Smith, beginning on Saturday, January 25, with The Wealth of Nations. Smith’s economic and social theories are crucial for understanding Marx’s critique of political economy. Smith deals with such issues as the so-called labor-theory of value, the equalization of the rate of profit, and the determination of commodity prices in important ways that anticipate Marx or require the corrections Marx provides. So we will dive headlong into Smith’s opus, An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations.
We will read the Oxford University Press edition of the work (1976; General editors: R. H. Campbell and A. S. Skinner; textual editor: W. B. Todd), republished by The Liberty Fund in a photographic reproduction edition in two volumes.
Russell Dale teaches philosophy at Lehman College, CUNY. He was a founding member of the Marxist Education Project and is on the Editorial Board of the Marxist journal Science & Society.
