A close reading and discussion convened with Sam Salour

The Economics of Global Turbulence: The Advanced Capitalist Economies from Long Boom to Long Downturn, 1945-2005

Brenner’s book, originally published in 1998 with a revised edition in 2006, remains the best account of the development of advanced capitalist economies since the second World War. His analysis of the long downturn, while rejected by Marxist orthodoxy, proved its robustness by its ability not only to account for the great recession but also for the global economic stagnation ever since. Even bourgeois scholars of different persuasions, whether neoclassical, neo-Keynesian, post-Keynesian or Kaleckian now admit that the advanced capitalist economies have seen slowing dynamism since the 1980s.
We will conduct a close reading of the text with extensive discussion. We read 10 to 15 pages in each session and expect to finish the book in 6 months. We will follow up with a reading of Brenner’s The Boom and The Bubble and his article What is Good for Goldman Sachs is Good for America where he extends his analysis to account for the Great Recession.
Robert Brenner is a professor emeritus of history and director of the Center for Social Theory and Comparative History at UCLA. His influential article, Agrarian Class Structure and Economic Development in Pre-Industrial Europe, imprinted his name on the debate around the origins of capitalism now known as the Brenner Debate.

No prerequisites nor any preparation is required. As stated above, ADMISSION IS FREE.
