SUMMARY:Reading 'Karl Marx in America'
DESCRIPTION:An eight-week study of Andrew Hartman’s recently published Karl Marx in America.  To read Karl Marx is to contemplate a world created by capitalism. People have long viewed the United States as the quintessential anti-Marxist nation\, but Marx’s ideas have inspired a wide range of people to formulate a more precise sense of the stakes of the American project. Historians have highlighted the imprint made on the United States by Enlightenment thinkers such as Adam Smith\, John Locke\, and Thomas Paine. Marx is rarely considered alongside these figures\, yet his ideas are the most relevant today because of capitalism’s centrality to American life. Karl Marx in America argues that even though Marx never visited America\, the country has been infused\, shaped\, and transformed by him. \nFacilitated by David Worley\, a member of the executive committee of the Marxist Education Project and a longtime associate of the Brecht Forum\, where he served a term as co-chair of the Board of Directors. David is a nonsectarian socialist\, active since the 1960s in support of a wide range of peace and social justice causes.

SUMMARY:Animals and Capitalism: Metabolic Labor
DESCRIPTION:Final session\, December 16 \nA study group on nonhuman animals’ relationship with capital as living\, breathing\, “commodified” beings. What differentiates nonhuman animals from non-living commodified objects is the way their metabolic and reproductive capacities are harnessed in production. A vibrant discourse is currently emerging around the question of nonhuman labor and the ways in which non-waged forms of labor contribute to value accumulation under capitalism. In this study group\, we will focus on how metabolic labor has been theorized in feminist studies and contemporary Marxist environmental and animal studies\, with a specific focus on the particular function of nonhuman animals for capitalism. We will consider how harnessing and enhancing the metabolic labor of nonhuman animals is connected to fields such as waste management\, biomedical research\, big data\, and the reproduction of the human labor force. \nConvened by Gizem Haspolat and Terike Haapoja. Gizem holds a PhD in Anthropology and specializes in critical animal studies\, animal geographies\, and human-nonhuman animal relations. In her dissertation research\, she explored live animal trade as a site that intensifies the translations between ‘animal’ and capital\, through an investigation of live cattle imports in Turkey. Her current research project examines the application of ‘smart’ technologies and artificial intelligence in industrial agricultural settings. Terike is a visual artist based in Berlin. Her interdisciplinary practice includes installations\, videos\, writings\, and collaborative projects that explore our relationship with the more-than-human world. Her current research on animal labor and multispecies anticapitalist struggle\, with an extensive open bibliography\, can be found on animalcapitalism.org.

SUMMARY:The Politics of Collecting with Eunsong Kim
DESCRIPTION:In her new book\, The Politics of Collecting: Race and the Aestheticization of Property\, Eunsong Kim traces how racial capitalism and colonialism situated the rise of US museum collections and conceptual art forms. Ranging from the conception of philanthropy devised by the robber barons of the late nineteenth century to ongoing digitization projects\, Kim provides a new history of contemporary art that accounts for the complicated entanglement of race\, capital\, and labor behind storied art institutions and artists. Drawing on history\, theory\, and economics\, Kim challenges received notions of artistic success and talent and calls for a new vision of art beyond the cultural institution. \nEunsong Kim is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Northeastern University. Her practice spans literary studies\, critical digital studies\, poetics\, translation\, visual culture and critical race & ethnic studies. She is also the author of Gospel of Regicide (2017) and\, with Sung Gi Kim\, a translation of Kim Eon Hee’s poetic text Have You Been Feeling Blue These Days? (2019). In 2021 she co-founded the journal offshoot\, an arts space for transnational activist conversations.

Our two selections are both set in France and both deal with corruption in high places by right-wing politicians and corporations who manipulate inept investigators of low social standing and morals. \n\nCommand Performance\, by Jean Echenoz; translated by Mark Polizzotti (New York Review Books\, 2020).  A hapless unemployed flight attendant thinks he can solve his financial problems by becoming a private detective\, but he ends up in the employ of a fractious right-wing political party. Things do not go well.  Be prepared to discuss the entire book at our first session on August 6.\nCreation Lake\, by Rachel Kushner (Scribners\, 2024). Sadie Smith once worked as a government undercover operative within an environmental rights group. She got fired for entrapment and went to work in corporate espionage. Her summer assignment in France is to provoke an incident by an environmental rights group that will justify government action. Will Sadie’s honey trap tactics succeed? (August 13\, 20\, 24)\n\n\nConvened by Jacqueline Cantwell and the MEP Literature Group. Jacqueline became involved with the MEP’s Literature Group because of her love of Victor Serge’s novels. Participating in an MEP reading group led by Serge translator Richard Greeman eight years ago\, Jacqueline found a community of readers eager to be challenged by the ambitions of international writers devoted to the creative potential of political fiction. Since the death of Michael Lardner\, who hosted and organized the Literature Group for so many years\, Jacqueline has taken the lead in furthering the group’s goals of exploring international fiction and encouraging thoughtful conversation.

As participants in Hegel’s Bacchanalian Revel we will step through such themes as \n\nThe Inverted World\nThe Dialectic of Master and Slave\nThe Cynical Bohemian\nThe Beautiful Soul\nFreedom and Terror\nSpirit Externalized as Nature and History\nThe Absolute\n\nThis journey provides a foundation for Hegel’s dialectic\, which is in turn a key to Marx’s Capital. \nWe recommend the translation by A.V. Miller of the Phenomenology of Spirit\, published by Oxford University Press and readily available as an inexpensive paperback. \nAlex Steinberg is an independent scholar and lifelong socialist who has taught classes in Marxist philosophy\, Hegel\, the dialectics of nature\, Heidegger\, and Nietzsche at the New Space for Pluralistic Anti-Capitalist Education\, The Brecht Forum\, the Marxist Education Project\, and other venues. Alex was a Conference Presenter at the First International Conference on Trotsky in Havana\, Cuba. DESCRIPTION:Next\, Monday July 14\, 5:00 pm \n  \nGet started with the Science and Visionary Fiction book group with our July Book Selection: Severance\, by Ling Ma.  Severance combines two things. It offers a satirical\, sardonic look at 21st century lives\, loves and labor as experienced by Candace Chen. Candace has both the classic dilemmas of a first generation immigrant and the here and now reality of a millennial New Yorker setting out in today’s world. \nInto this world comes Shen Fever\, which brings an apocalypse not unlike what Covid 19 might have been. Ling Ma published the book in 2018\, which makes its dystopian vision all the more remarkable.  Candace winds up in a group of like minded would-be survivors and the tale unfolds. \nThe novel does offer a brisk pace yet we mostly read it for the author’s eyes and ears on our current dilemmas as we struggle to survive. \n  \nFor more than three years\, the MEP Science and Visionary Fiction reading group has explored topics of oppression and resistance\, history and science\, capitalist and post-capitalist future\, human and nonhuman intelligence. We read with an overall commitment\, To build a better future\, we have to envision it first (adapted from Walidah Imarisha). It’s less concerned with “what could have been” and more concerned with “what is and can/will be”. It acknowledges\, grapples with and carries “what has been.”   —NNedi Okorafor  \nDip into the growing realm of Africanfuturism reading NNedi Okorafor’s most recent novel\, Death of the Author.  Her science fiction successful and highly popular today\, Okorafor here provides both an introduction to Nigerian science fiction for those that need it and a reflection on its cultural meaning for those who have read Binti\, others from Okorfor\, or other Nigerian- or African-inspired visionary and speculative fiction today. \nDeath of the Author centers on a Nigerian woman setting out to write science fiction\, perhaps like Okorafor herself years and many novels back. The novel explores Zelu’s dilemmas and doubts\, her relationship with family and community\, the world of publishing  in ways that may reflect Okorfor’s past. This month\, we will read two volumes by Bao Ninh–The Sorrow of War and Hà Nôi at Midnight.  \nBorn in October 1952\, Bao Ninh experienced the effects of US bombing while growing up and later joined the “Glorious 27th Youth Brigade” at the age of 17. Bao Ninh’s writing offers restrained\, poignant\, yet powerful accounts of the “sorrow of war\,” the losses and grief of a generation who fought to unify the country. \nConvened by Jacqueline Cantwell and the MEP Literature Reading Group. SUMMARY:60 Years Since the April Revolution in Santo Domingo
DESCRIPTION:Sixty years ago\, on April 24\, 1965\, tens of thousands of ordinary people in Santo Domingo (also known as the Dominican Republic) joined a popular revolt which sought to restore President Juan Bosch to power after he was overthrown in a US-backed\, right-wing military coup in September\, 1963. Posing a threat to both local elites and Washington’s geopolitical expansion in the Caribbean\, the April Revolution\, and the subsequent anti-imperialist resistance that sprang up against US military occupation\, contributed to the development of anti-imperialist politics in Santo Domingo and beyond. \nJoin us on May 3 for a panel to commemorate the 6oth anniversary of the April Revolution and discuss its political implications\, the role of working-class Afro-Dominicans\, women\, LGBTQ people\, Haitian internationalist fighters\, socialists\, writers and artists\, as well as the worldwide international solidarity movement that ensued in the face of imperialist onslaught. \nGénesis Lara is a scholar of Caribbean and Afro-Latinx Studies. Raised in both the Bronx and Miami\, her research focuses on gender\, Blackness\, social movements\, human rights\, and diaspora world making. She explores the ways Afro-Caribbean women mobilized grief and mourning as ways to contest state violence in the twentieth century. Her work poses larger questions of ways Black people have conceived and fought for human rights. Génesis Lara completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Florida and her PhD at the University of California\, Davis. \nGina Goico is a multidisciplinary artist\, scholar\, and self-proclaimed necia. Goico navigates their identity and the spaces where they exist in the Dominican Republic and the United States through their work\, which ranges from embroidery to installations\, ink drawings\, and performances. Goico’s research focuses on how the aesthetics\, performances\, and organizing of self-identifying black Dominican artists and organizers operate as strategies that queer state-circulated identity in the Dominican Republic and its New York City diaspora. Goico was a Van Lier Fellow and artist in residence with Smack Mellon. They also participated in the AIM fellowship at The Bronx Museum of the Arts and were artist-in-residence at The Laundromat Project Kelly Street. Goico holds an AAS in Fine Arts and Illustration from Altos de Chavón and a BFA in Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design. They also have an MA in Arts Politics from NYU and are PhD candidate in Performing and Media Arts at Cornell University. \nAmaury Rodriguez has been involved in Haitian-Dominican solidarity activism for more than two decades. His writing has appeared in NACLA\, El Salto\, Esendom and Jacobin. He is co-editor\, with Raj Chetty\, of a special issue of The Black Scholar journal dedicated to Dominican Black Studies. \nMatías Bosch Carcuro studied Environmental Sciences and Arts at the Central University of Chile. He has a MA in Social Sciences with a minor in Politics and a MA in Public Management and Policy from the University of Chile. He is also a University professor and researcher on political economy\, labor\, development models\, social rights\, social protection and security systems\, as well as state policies targeting discriminated and overexploited working people.

DESCRIPTION:In Volume I of Capital\, Marx analyzes the processes of capitalist production and accumulation and identifies the real sources of wealth: nature and the labor performed by working people. In Volume II\, The Process of Circulation of Capital\, he addresses the next big question: How can the reproduction of society as a whole take place\, if there is no conscious social planning that ensures that all needs are met\, in the necessary proportions\, such that life can persist and the capitalist relations of production be sustained? We discover the answer\, but we also learn of new contradictions and sources of crisis inherent to capitalist society. Marx thereby lays the groundwork for the system-wide analyses in Volume III\, The Process of Capitalist Production as a Whole. \nWe welcome all who have a basic knowledge of Volume I of Capital to this ongoing weekly study group. Participants are closely reading and discussing Volume II\, guided by Fred Murphy and other experienced students of Marx from the MEP. We use a hybrid approach to cover the entire book. For key chapters or sections\, we do a line-by-line reading with commentary and occasional supplemental materials. Participants read other sections on their own\, and we summarize and discuss when we meet. The series is ongoing until we have read the entire book. SUMMARY:Conversations on the US Elections - What happens next?
DESCRIPTION:Join us online on Wednesday\, November 6 at 6:30 pm US ET for a first-impressions conversation on whatever results are known of the 2024 US elections. We will not know everything; many things will play out over the months that follow. We will know some things that have already taken shape. We can ask what will governing look like\, what new shapes may fascism take\, what directions will capitalism take\, and how resistance will evolve. What does the election mean for climate struggle\, Palestine solidarity\, reproductive freedom\, challenging the carceral state? \nRecent MEP study groups and events have taken on these and related questions. We will bring those studies to bear on these questions\, and bring to bear your participation in these struggles as well. \nJoin us for this open-ended conversation about the evolving US political conjuncture now shaping the November elections. SUMMARY:Reading Marx's Capital Volume I
DESCRIPTION:Participants in this group are closely reading and discussing Volume I of Karl Marx’s Capital: A Critique of Political Economy. \n \nThe study of Capital has been at the core of the Marxist Education Project since its inception. Every generation involved in struggle since Marx’s time has rediscovered Marx’s sustained effort to describe and explain the origin and trajectory of modern society. \nFor key chapters or sections\, we do a line-by-line reading with commentary and occasional supplemental materials. Participants read other sections on their own\, and we summarize and discuss when we meet. In line with Marx’s own approach in Capital\, we both take it all very seriously and make it fun as well. If you have read Capital before – or if you have never read it – studying it together with us will deepen your understanding of the world today and refresh your political commitments. \nLisa Maya Knauer guides this group\, along with other experienced MEP teachers. Knauer has been involved with Marxist education in New York for her entire adult life\, and has taught a variety of classes at the MEP and its predecessors. Her current activist work focuses on immigrant workers’ rights and indigenous struggles for land and water. In her day job\, she is a tenured radical at a public university. \nThis study group is ongoing until we have read the entire book. At present we are reading Part Seven\, “The Process of Accumulation of Capital.” RSVP below to join the group in progress. SUMMARY:Hegel for Radicals: The Science of Logic III
DESCRIPTION:The MEP’s recurring series Hegel for Radicals continues this summer with a reading of the third and final part of Hegel’s magnum opus\, The Science of Logic. This is the discussion of the Notion culminating in the Absolute Idea. There will be a review session for recurring students as well as those who missed Part I\, Being\, and Part II\, Essence. Familiarity with this work greatly aids any reading of Marx’s Capital. \nAlex Steinberg will guide participants past the legendary obstacles to understanding this unsurpassed presentation of dialectics. Its depth and systematic structure is without parallel in any other of Hegel’s works. \nEight weekly sessions will introduce what is living in Hegel for those who want to change the world. No prior experience with Hegel or attendance at previous classes is expected or required. Our goal is to make Hegel’s dialectic less mysterious as we go along and try to tease out the revolutionary implications in his thought and its significance for our time. \nAlex Steinberg is the facilitator of Hegel for Radicals. He is an independent scholar who has taught and published on topics such as the philosophy of Heidegger and Nazism\, Marxism and humanism\, Hegel’s philosophy of history and Hegel’s Phenomenology at various alternative educational institutions. Alex was a Conference Presenter at the First International Conference on Trotsky in Havana\, Cuba. He has been also involved with the governance of WBAI radio in New York and its parent organization\, Pacifica\, most recently as the Chair of the Pacifica National Board from 2020-2021.

SUMMARY:Palestine: Celebrating 75 Years of Literature
DESCRIPTION:Read Palestinian fiction\, poetry\, and related literature in weekly meetings with the MEP’s Literature Group. The ongoing catastrophe in the Middle East breaks our hearts daily. As part of our mission to explore creative political resistance to oppression\, we will read several novels and poems by Palestinian authors. The novels selected for this session include prominent and emerging writers investigating themes since 1947 of armed resistance\, class\, the refugee experience\, and women’s experience of conflict. \nWe invite participants to add to our selections\, published from 1949 to the present\, and tentatively include: \nThings You May Find HIdden in My Ear by Mosab Abu Toha; Minor Detail\, by Adania Shibli; selected stories by Ghassan Kanafani; Out of Time: The Collected Stories of Samira Azzam\, Arabesques by Anton Shammas\, The Arsonists’ City by Hala Alyan\, Wild Thorns\, by Sahar Khalifeh; Passage to the plaza\, by Sahar Khalifeh; A Day in the Life of Abed Salama; Palestine +100\, edited by Basma Ghalayini. \nConvened by Jacqueline Cantwell\, who became involved with the MEP’s Literature Group because of her love of Victor Serge’s novels. Participating in an MEP reading group led by Serge translator Richard Greeman seven years ago\, Jacqueline found a community of readers eager to be challenged by the ambitions of international writers devoted to the creative potential of political fiction. Since the death of Michael Lardner\, who hosted and organized the Literature Group for so many years\, she has taken the lead in furthering the group’s goals of exploring international fiction and encouraging thoughtful conversation. \nThis group’s final session is June 27. SUMMARY:Animals\, Capitalism\, Marxism:   A Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join the authors of two major works on animals and capitalism for an event exploring the potential and limits of Marxist theory for addressing the roles and fates of nonhuman animals\, as well as ways to connect anticapitalist struggles to animal liberation and environmental justice. Dinesh Joseph Wadiwel and Alex Blanchette bring to the Marxist Education Project an ongoing conversation they have been conducting this spring as Visiting Fellows at the Harvard Law School’s Animal Law & Policy Program. Wadiwel is the author of Animals and Capital and Blanchette is the author of Porkopolis: American Animality\, Standardized Life\, and the Factory Farm. Both books have recently been featured in MEP reading groups. \nDinesh Wadiwel is Associate Professor in Human Rights and Socio-Legal Studies at The University of Sydney. He has been active in anti-poverty and disability rights movements. Previous books include The War against Animals and\, as co-editor\, Foucault and Animals (Brill\, 2016). \nAlex Blanchette is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Environmental Studies at Tufts University. He also co-edited How Nature Works: Rethinking Labor on a Troubled Planet\, which analyzes how non-human beings are enlisted into capitalist work regimens. His current research addresses the politics of quitting meatpacking\, based on ethnographic interviews with ex-workers from across the United States. \n

SUMMARY:If We Burn: Mass Protest and Political Strategy for the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:What can the last fifteen years of worldwide mass protests teach us about strategy and organization for socialism? Street protests and organizing from Seattle WTO to Occupy and on to George Floyd Black Lives Matter demonstrated new tactics\, new generations of activists\, and new lessons about the future. Likewise\, worldwide protests from the Arab Spring to Latin America\, Europe\, and Hong Kong also struck hard and have brought many important lessons. Join us for reading and discussion probing three connected themes: \n\nMass street protest since Occupy. We will analyze the rich legacy of largely leaderless mass mobilizations as well as new labor struggles\, locally and globally\, over the last fifteen years.\nCrowdsourcing the Revolution: Digital possibilities\, real-world limitations in networked movements. How has digital communications media changed the organizing landscape since the Arab Spring? A critical assessment of the politics and practicalities of digital networking and communication for effective political strategies.\nFrom mass mobilization to accumulating power against capitalism: new long-term strategy for socialism. What remains important and what has changed in connecting strategy and organization?\n\nReadings will include selections from newly published analyses of and theoretical reflection on recent struggles in the United States and globally: \nIf We Burn: The Mass Protest Decade and the Missing Revolution\, by Vincent Bevins (PublicAffairsBooks)\nTwitter and Tear Gas:  The Power and Fragility of Networked Protest\, by Zeynap Tufekci (Yale)\nCommunism and Strategy: Rethinking Political Mediations\, by Isabelle Garo (Verso)\nNeither Vertical nor Horizontal: A Theory of Political Organization\, by Rodrigo Nunes (Verso) \nBringing direct experience from Brazil\, France\, Turkey\, and the United States\, these authors invite reconsideration of political and organizational strategy in light of the worldwide extent of recent struggles.
