Description

Marxism and the Oppression of Women: Toward a Unitary Theory, by Lise Vogel, has been called “a pioneering work of Marxist feminism.” First published in 1983, it was recently reissued by Haymarket Books in an expanded edition. The book considers socialist-feminist analyses and then revisits classic Marxist texts on the “woman question” from Marx and Engels through the Russian Revolution. Using central theoretical concepts of Marx’s writings, it opens up an original theory of gender and the social production and reproduction of material life. This class will undertake a close reading of Marxism and the Oppression of Women with the intention of learning how its theoretical insights can be useful today.

LISE VOGEL, a veteran of the civil rights and women’s liberation movements, is well known as a feminist scholar. She is a retired professor of sociology and is currently writing a memoir.
