SUMMARY:Studies in the Works of Antonio Gramsci with Piruz Alemi
DESCRIPTION:A Cultural Politics Series\nAntonio Gramsci is widely known throughout the world for his impact on social and political thought. 4 more sessions of this seminar continue a close reading of Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks\, delving into key themes related to civil society\, the state\, hegemony\, subaltern studies\, cultural analysis\, race\, class and gender studies\, film studies\, linguistics\, and critical theory. \nThroughout these sessions\, we will look to connect cultures and their human rights struggles. We will also explore those who influenced Gramsci\, particularly Marx\, but also Machiavelli and Croce. This seminar is accessible to people at all levels of familiarity with Gramsci’s work\, including those just beginning their studies of Gramsci. \nPiruz Alemi holds a PhD in political economy from New School for Social Research as well as a MFA in documentary film making from CCNY. SUMMARY:Ecosocialism in the Shadow of Covid
DESCRIPTION:A 10-week online study (2 weeks remain—recordings of earlier sessions are available to new attendees)\nConvened with Fred Murphy and Steve Knight\nJoin The Marxist Education Project’s Ecosocialism Study Group as we convene online this fall to consider new works on the political economy of global warming and the Covid-19 pandemic. We will read and discuss three books: The Corona Crash (Verso)\, by Grace Blakeley\, details how the pandemic is ushering in a new era in which the corporate economy collapses into the arms of the state\, and behemoths like Amazon and Netflix balloon in profit and power. White Skin\, Black Fuel (Verso)\, by Andreas Malm and the Zetkin Collective\, takes a comprehensive look at how extreme-right currents are responding to ecological crises with with authoritarian and xenophobic proposals while remaining ardent supporters of fossil capital – black fuels to support white supremacy. And A People’s Green New Deal (Pluto)\, by Max Ajl\, engages critically with various Green New Deal proposals and sketches out a radical alternative committed to degrowth\, anti-imperialism and agro-ecology. \nFRED MURPHY has co-led study groups at The MEP on ecosocialism\, the history of capitalism\, science and technology\, and Latin American politics. He studied and taught historical sociology at the New School for Social Research. SUMMARY:New York City and the Experience of Modernity\, Fall session
DESCRIPTION:An eight week series featuring visual and oral presentations along with discussions each week. Please note that this will be on Tuesdays\, not Fridays. TWO MORE WEEKS \nConvened by Thomas Wensing\nIn the year 1877\, the signals were given for the rest of the century; the black would be put back; the strikes of white workers would not be tolerated; the industrial and political elites of North and South would take hold of the country and organize the greatest march of economic growth in human history. They would do it with the aid of\, and at the expense of\, black labor\, white labor\, Chinese labor\, European immigrant labor\, female labor\, rewarding them differently by race\, sex\, national origin\, and social class\, in such a way as to create separate levels of oppression – a skillful terracing to stabilize the pyramid of wealth”[1] \nThis is a seminar about New York City and its people. It is not a study of architectural styles and objects\, – although the physical stuff of cities does play a role -\, but it is a course about the experience of the way in which modernity builds and destroys cities. In the previous course we saw how the idea of modernity originated in eighteenth-century Western Europe during the Age of Enlightenment. In this course we explore how modernity is not only an expression of the constellation of forces that builds modern societies\, but from the onset has been an exclusionary project along racial\, gender and class lines. \nEurope produced\, in the words of Stuart Hall\, a cultural identity which portrayed Europe as a distinct\, unique and triumphant civilization[2]. The construction of otherness within the dominant European culture itself\, and in relation to the exploration and conquest of the Americas\, formed the pretext for native displacement and genocide\, environmental exploitation and extractivism\, oppression and slavery. These discourses of “self” and “otherness” are\, of course\, inextricably interwoven with the history of New York City\, and have always been contested. \nThis semester turns to the late 19th and 20th century and focuses on the way in which the building of New York City took place in an arena of contesting political\, cultural and economic forces; that of the dominant\, patriarchal\, Anglo-Saxon\, male\, capitalist culture on one side\, and that of the excluded social groups on the other. We will look at various groups\, whether it be socialist\, communist\, feminist\, black\, or queer\, which questioned the ‘centeredness’ of the West\, – and the structures of oppression it built -\, and which thus argued for the project of Reason and liberal democracy to be expanded and fulfil its promise. \nWriters and novelists have been able to direct the gaze at these groups which have been excluded from the path of progress\, – as it was defined and constricted by society – to express diverging meanings to life in the metropolis. Theirs were often minority views\, but in expressing them\, they were able to carve out space for the ‘other’\, and they have expanded the conversation and imagination in indelible ways. A question which looms large in this seminar is the relationship between individual agency and collective action. The seminar encourages the expression of personal\, familial\, local\, and ethnic explorations and to tie these to larger societal trends. [3] The participants will be presented with multiple views of the same topic; one drawn from the professional literature\, – either historical\, architectural\, sociological\, or drawn from literary studies -\, and one from fiction or biography. Two points of view are compared: that of sociologists\, urban planners\, geographers\, and architects\, with that of the subjective vantage point of the biographical account or the fictional character. \nWeekly Lectures and Bibliography: \nEach week consists of readings\, one lecture class and one group discussion\, preceded by a 20-minute introduction on the topic. \n[1] Zinn\, Howard. SUMMARY:The Warehouse: Workers and Robots at Amazon with Alessandro Delfanti
DESCRIPTION:“Delfanti has done here what more critics of Amazon should — listen carefully to the people whose work makes the corporation function. Those of us fighting for a better future than Amazon’s dystopia have much to learn from this book”.  — Dania Rajendra\, Inaugural Director\, Athena Coalition \n‘Work hard\, have fun\, make history’ proclaims the slogan on the walls of Amazon’s warehouses. This cheerful message hides a reality of digital surveillance\, aggressive anti-union tactics and disciplinary layoffs. Reminiscent of the tumult of early industrial capitalism\, the hundreds of thousands of workers who help Amazon fulfil consumers’ desire are part of an experiment in changing the way we all work. \nIn this book\, Alessandro Delfanti takes readers inside Amazon’s warehouses to show how technological advancements and managerial techniques subdue the workers rather than empower them\, as seen in the sensors that track workers’ every movement around the floor and algorithmic systems that re-route orders to circumvent worker sabotage. He looks at new technologies including robotic arms trained by humans and augmented reality goggles\, showing that their aim is to standardize\, measure and discipline human work rather than replace it. \nDespite its innovation\, Amazon will always need living labor’s flexibility and low cost. And as the warehouse is increasingly automated\, worker discontent increases. Striking under the banner “we are not robots”\, employees have shown that they are acutely aware of such contradictions. The only question remains: how long will it be until Amazon’s empire collapses? \nALESSANDRO DELFANTI teaches Digital Media at the University of Toronto. SUMMARY:The Invention of the White Race
DESCRIPTION:A reading and discussion of Theodore W. Allen’s two volume work\nwith The Revolutions Study Group\nIn 1972\, after a lifetime of activism in the labor and communist movements\, Theodore W. Allen shared the following strategic insight with a new generation of revolutionaries: “The most vulnerable point at which a decisive blow can be struck against bourgeois rule in the U.S. is white supremacy. White supremacy is both the keystone (in the arch) and the Achilles heel of U.S. bourgeois democracy\, the historic form of bourgeois rule in the US.] \n \nIt is a vulnerable point because it is a historically developed and unresolvable internal contradiction of US bourgeois democracy. It is the decisive vulnerable point because—as history has repeatedly proved—the basic class contradictions in bourgeois democracy can never fully mature until and unless the anti-proletarian nature of white supremacy has been completely established in the minds of the proletarian masses.” \nTheodore W. Allen spent the next 30 years researching the primary sources and writing The Invention of the White Race (2 volumes) which provides a historical materialist analysis of racial oppression and the white identity which emerged as a principal form of social control over rebellious laboring class of European and Africans in the pattern setting colonies of Virginia and Maryland in the late 17th early 18th century. \nThe Revolutions Study Group (started at the Brecht Forum) has met since 2009. The group has recently completed an in-depth study of W.E.B. Dubois’ Black Reconstruction and this past winter and spring studied White Supremacy and Bourgeois Social Control.

DESCRIPTION:Selections from A Hubert Harrison Reader\nReading and discussion with the The Revolutions Study Group \nRecognized by the contemporaries of his days as the leading orator\, editor\, thinker\,  organizer and writer in the Black Mecca of Harlem for over 10 years before his premature death at the age of 44\, Harrison’s  articles on socialism\, Black self-determination\, Africa\, Asia and the Caribbean\, US History\, class first vs race first discussion\, WWI\, imperialism and internationalism were read around the world and are as relevant today as they were a century ago. \nJeffrey B Perry author of the 2 volume biography of Hubert Harrison (Columbia University Press) and editor of A Hubert Harrison Reader(Wesleyan University Press) describes Harrison “as the most class conscious of the race radicals and the most race conscious of the class radicals in those years” adding that he is “a key link in the two great trends of the Civil Rights/Black Liberation struggle—the labor and civil rights trend associated associated with A. SUMMARY:Grundrisse: The Chapter on Money (The first two notebooks)
DESCRIPTION:“Forces of production and social relations – two different sides of the development of the social individual – appear to capital as mere means\, and are merely means for it to produce on its limited foundation. In fact\, however\, they are the material conditions to blow this foundation sky-high…” —Karl Marx\, The Grundrisse  \nPerhaps the most curious and least understood aspect of Marx’s work is his method of analysis. Marx viewed all his economic laws as tendencies and it is hard to deny that those tendencies are becoming more and more the realities of today’s capitalism. However\, to understand our society we need to do more than reading and accepting his concepts\, we must critically analyze them and look for the way of thinking that produced them. It is with this goal in my mind that we should embark on a journey through the long and complex sentences of the Grundrisse. This work is perhaps the best representation of the process of thinking that found its culmination in Capital and we will be engaging with it during our study. Without a doubt\, this will be a long and arduous process but we should always keep in mind that “there is no royal road to science and only those who do not dread the fatiguing climb of its steep paths have a chance of gaining its luminous summits. Continuing on November 6\,  we will read from “The Chapter on Money” utilizing the Penguin edition of Marx’s Grundrisse. Recordings of prior sessions are available to all who would like to review. \n  \n  \n

If this is true\, is there a future for Gramsci’s legacy?” —Michael Denning \nIn the introduction to the May/June\, 2021 New Left Review is this summary of Michael Denning’s essay\, “Everyone a Legislator”: “What is the principal legacy today of Gramsci’s writing on politics. Often taken to be a theory of the party as a “modern prince” derived from Machiavelli\, can this still be so in an epoch when political parties are everywhere in decline? This year in the May June issue of New Left Review\, Michael Denning reasons that what now matters in Gramsci’s work is his theory of organizing and a premonitory form of democratic legislation.” \nThe essay is available online at https://newleftreview.org/issues/ii129. \nThe image used here\, Verso la città futura (toward a future city)\, was painted on the side of an apartment complex on via Canova in Florence by artist Jorit.
