SUMMARY:Studies in the Works of Antonio Gramsci with Piruz Alemi
DESCRIPTION:A Cultural Politics Series\nAntonio Gramsci is widely known throughout the world for his impact on social and political thought. 4 more sessions of this seminar continue a close reading of Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks\, delving into key themes related to civil society\, the state\, hegemony\, subaltern studies\, cultural analysis\, race\, class and gender studies\, film studies\, linguistics\, and critical theory. \nThroughout these sessions\, we will look to connect cultures and their human rights struggles. We will also explore those who influenced Gramsci\, particularly Marx\, but also Machiavelli and Croce. This seminar is accessible to people at all levels of familiarity with Gramsci’s work\, including those just beginning their studies of Gramsci. \nPiruz Alemi holds a PhD in political economy from New School for Social Research as well as a MFA in documentary film making from CCNY. He is director of the People of Color International Cultural Exchange Film Festival and teaches at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. \n  \n\nAll events are sliding scale—choose the level at which you choose to contribute to The Marxist Education Project. DESCRIPTION:Selections from A Hubert Harrison Reader\nReading and discussion with the The Revolutions Study Group \nRecognized by the contemporaries of his days as the leading orator\, editor\, thinker\,  organizer and writer in the Black Mecca of Harlem for over 10 years before his premature death at the age of 44\, Harrison’s  articles on socialism\, Black self-determination\, Africa\, Asia and the Caribbean\, US History\, class first vs race first discussion\, WWI\, imperialism and internationalism were read around the world and are as relevant today as they were a century ago. \nJeffrey B Perry author of the 2 volume biography of Hubert Harrison (Columbia University Press) and editor of A Hubert Harrison Reader(Wesleyan University Press) describes Harrison “as the most class conscious of the race radicals and the most race conscious of the class radicals in those years” adding that he is “a key link in the two great trends of the Civil Rights/Black Liberation struggle—the labor and civil rights trend associated associated with A. Philip Randolph and Martin Luther King\, Jr. and the race and nationalist trend associated with Marcus Garvey and Malcolm X.” \nTHE REVOLUTIONS STUDY GROUP (started at the Brecht Forum) has met since 2009.We also meet on Tuesday nights where we study Theodore Allen’s The Invention of the White Race.     \nThere is a special offer to be part of this reading group and the Tuesday reading group for a combined price of $100.     \n\nAll events are sliding scale—choose the level at which you choose to contribute to The Marxist Education Project. SUMMARY:Value\, Fictitious Capital and Finance. The Timelessness of Karl Marx’s Capital with John Milios
DESCRIPTION:Karl Marx’s monetary value theory constitutes a radical break from the David Ricardo’s classical notion of value; it conceives value not as a “quantity” of labor contained in the commodity but as a social relation expressing the immanent regularities of the capitalist mode of production. Starting from his value-form analysis in Part One of Volume 1 of Capital\, Marx develops the concept of “fictitious capital” in Volume 3\, which depicts the role of interest-bearing capital and the financial sphere. Marx’s analysis allows for an understanding of contemporary capitalism\, financialization and crisis: financialization cannot be isolated from “real” economy; it should be conceived as a “technology” of exercising capitalist power and hegemony over the working classes and the society as a whole. Marx’s analysis provides the terms to rethink the contemporary neoliberal form of capitalism and its crisis as expressions of the contradictions inherent in the organization of capitalist power. \nJOHN MILIOS is Professor of Political Economy and the History of Economic Thought at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA)\, Greece. He has authored more than two hundred papers published or forthcoming in refereed journals (in Greek\, English\, German\, French\, Spanish\, Portuguese\, Italian\, Chinese and Turkish) including the Cambridge Journal of Economics\, History of Political Economy\, History of Economics Review\, Review of Political Economy\, European Journal of the History of Economic Thought\, The American Journal of Economics and Sociology\, Science & Society\, Rethinking Marxism\, Review of Radical Political Economics\, and has participated as invited speaker in numerous international conferences. He has also authored or co-authored some eighteen scholarly books. His most recent books in English are A Political Economy of Contemporary Capitalism and Its Crisis: Demystifying Finance (Routledge 2013\, Paperback Edition 2014\, co-authored with D. P. Sotiropoulos and S. Lapatsioras) and The Origins of Capitalism as a Social System: The Prevalence of an Aleatory Encounter (Routledge 2018).
