SUMMARY:Reinventing the Welfare State with Ursula Huws (Pluto FireWorks Series)
DESCRIPTION:Ursula Huws speaks with Todd Wolfson on creative ideas for reinventing the welfare state to address contemporary challenges in a session chaired by FireWorks Series editor\, and Editorial Director at Pluto Press\, David Castle. \nWhen faced with standard issue programs to restore the post-war era “good jobs” and welfare state\, long-time organizing activist\, researcher and scholar Ursula Huws comments “…most woke young people who have grown up in the early twenty-first century would\, if transported back to the 1950s\, probably feel themselves to be in a restrictive\, class-bound\, sexist\, racist\, homophobic hell.” This is a jumping off point for Huws new manifesto-like book on Reinventing the Welfare State: Digital Platforms and Public Policies. Join Ursula for a detailed online conversation this coming Sunday afternoon February 21 on casual work versus “platform work” under the regime of neo-liberal social policy and global corporations\, the accompanying persistence of racial and gender inequality\, and proposals for what we can do about it. Huws has been a remarkable thinker and engaging speaker on these matters for decades\, and her approach as ever spans national policy as well as the new wave of grassroots struggles. \n \n  \nIn Reinventing the Welfare State: Digital Platforms and Public PoliciesUrsula Huws proposes a welfare state infused with social justice and equality\, including a redistributive UBI\, decommodification of platforms and universal workers’ rights. With positivity and rigour\, she outlines a ‘digital welfare state’ for the 21st century\, which would involve a repurposing of online platform technologies under public control to modernise and expand public services\, and improve accessibility. \nUrsula Huws is Professor of Labor and Globalization at the University of Hertfordshire. She has been carrying out pioneering research on the economic\, social and gender impacts of technological change\, employment restructuring and the changing international division of labor since the 1970s\, combining scholarship with activism and popular writing. \nTodd Wolfson — Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Rutgers University (New Brunswick\, NJ) and Co-Director of Media\, Inequality & Chance Center (MIC) — researches the intersection of new media and contemporary social movements. Author of Digital Rebellion: The Birth of the Cyber Left (2014)\, Wolfson also co-edited The Great Refusal: Herbert Marcuse and Contemporary Social Movements (2017). \nAll events are sliding scale. Have made the presentation and book combination offer a special low price. No one is turned away for inability to pay If you cannot afford to pay\, please write to info@marxedproject.org to receive the URL for the zoom link to attend this or any other class or event. \n

SUMMARY:Interpretation Machines: Contradictions of “Artificial Intelligence” in 21st Century Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:with Larry Lohmann\nBYOND DIGITAL CAPITALISM: NEW WAYS OF LIVING (presentation 3)\nSince the nineteenth century\, left movements have sought footholds among the ever-renewing contradictions of capitalist industrial mechanization and its relation to work and energy. These experiments\, begun by Marx\, remain fragmentary and contested. Yet the crises that twenty-first century digital mechanization presents and exacerbates may shed new light on this longer history of automation even as they confront the left with fresh puzzles. \nThis talk proposes three responses to these challenges. 1) It may be more useful to movement organizing to stress continuities between industrial-era and digital-era value-creation than to focus only on differences. 2) The contradiction between living and dead labor that Marx identified not only persists in today’s digital economy\, but also remains fundamental both to understanding crisis and to identifying possibilities for radical political change. 3) It may make more strategic sense for the left to approach the striking innovations in automation advanced over the past decade by the likes of Facebook\, Amazon\, Alibaba\, Microsoft\, and Apple as a new level of the mechanization of interpretive work than to promote mystifying labels such as artificial intelligence (AI). \nLarry Lohmann works with The Corner House\, a UK-based solidarity and research organization. \nAll tickets are sliding scale. We do not deny admission to those with the inability to pay. If you would like to attend this or any other event or class simple write to info@marxedproject.org for a URL with the link for participation.

SUMMARY:Choke Points
DESCRIPTION:Logistics Workers Disrupting the Global Supply Chain\nA discussion with editors Jake Alimahomed-Wilson and Immanuel Ness \nPresented by The Marxist Education Project with The Left Front \nAn important new book from Pluto Press (plutobooks.com) \nGlobal capitalism is always a precarious system. Relying on the steady flow of goods across the world\, trans-national companies such as Wal-Mart and Amazon depend on the work of millions in docks\, warehouses and logistics centers to keep goods moving. This is the global supply chain. If the chain is broken\, capitalism grinds to a halt. This talk concerns the book of the same name\, looking at case studies across the world to uncover a network of resistance by these workers who\, despite their importance\, face extreme exploitation and economic violence. \nExperiencing first hand wildcat strikes\, organized blockades and boycotts\, the authors have explored a diverse range of organizing and related activities\, from South China dockworkers to the transformation of the port of Piraeus in Greece\, and from the Southern California logistics sector\, to dock and logistical workers in Chile and unions in Turkey. \nJoin us for an evening of discussion on the potential strength our class has the ability to utilize in facing capital dominance during our period where capital has of necessity created this points that really give us the means of “choking” their power. \n“This phenomenal collection is a must-read for anyone interested in the dire state of the contemporary global economy. It offers an unprecedented analysis of supply chain capitalism through case studies from around the world that are beautifully written and carefully researched.”—Deborah Cowen\, University of Toronto \n“Beyond analyzing logistical choke points as abstract sites for capital to route around or locations in which workers acquire untimely power\, this volume takes us straight into these crucial nodes of labor struggle. Choke points in global supply chains are revealed as spaces of hazard and calculation\, violence and negotiation\, victory and loss\, passion and organization.” —Brett Neilson\, Research Professor\, Institute for Culture and Society\, Western Sydney University \nJake Alimahomed-Wilson is Professor of Sociology at California State University\, Long Beach. He is the author of Solidarity Forever? Race\, Gender\, and Unionism in the Ports of Southern California (Lexington Books\, 2016) and co-author of Getting the Goods: Ports\, Labor\, and the Logistics Revolution (Cornell University Press\, 2008). \nImmanuel Ness is Professor of Political Science at City University of New York. He is author of Southern Insurgency (Pluto\, 2015)\, Guest Workers and Resistance to U.S. Corporate Despotism (Univ. of Illinois Press\, 2011)\, and numerous other works. He is editor of the International Encyclopaedia of Revolution and Working USA: The Journal of Labor and Society. \nNo one turned away for inability to pay

SUMMARY:Capital\, Volume I
DESCRIPTION:Class & Discussion with Capital Studies Group \nKarl Marx’s Capital remains the fundamental text for understanding how capitalism works. By unraveling the commoditized forms of our interactions with nature and each other\, it provides tools to understand capitalism’s astounding innovativeness and productivity\, intertwined with growing inequality and misery\, alienation\, stunting of human potential\, and ecological destruction all over the globe. In this way\, Capital offers the reader a methodology for doing our own analysis of current developments. \nThe Capital Studies Group has been meeting on Saturdays for nearly two years. We are a diverse group of students\, activists and teachers who are now dedicating themselves to a chronological reading of all three volumes of Marx’s Capital.
