SUMMARY:Reading Science Fiction Politically - Spring 2024 Season
DESCRIPTION:The Science and Visionary Fiction reading group meets weekly to read and discuss science\, visionary and speculative fiction that bears on politics\, the environment\, and the struggle for a better future for all. We focus on the concept of visionary fiction\, emerging from Octavia Butler’s writings and beautifully articulated ten years ago by Walidah Imarisha\, “To Build a Future Without Police and Prisons\, We Have to Imagine It First.”  \nWhile far from earthbound\, and while not immune from reexamining the past or imagining\, we do so to stay with the present\, and with paths forward that do need new envisioning and imagining. \nThis year\, our selections have explored how artificial and nonhuman intelligence heighten both contradictions and possibilities. In the best of contemporary science fiction (and science fiction-adjacent) writing\, conflicts over these issues illustrate the larger dimensions of social conflict today. \nTo start the spring season\, we will read Ray Nayler’s 2022 novel\, The Mountain in the Sea. Nayler’s novel encompasses these themes–nonhuman (octopus) intelligence\, artificial intelligence\, climate justice and capitalist disregard for the earth\, all in intensely human terms. \nJoin in now to help select the additional titles to add to our current list. \n

SUMMARY:If We Burn: Mass Protest and Political Strategy for the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:What can the last fifteen years of worldwide mass protests teach us about strategy and organization for socialism? Street protests and organizing from Seattle WTO to Occupy and on to George Floyd Black Lives Matter demonstrated new tactics\, new generations of activists\, and new lessons about the future. Likewise\, worldwide protests from the Arab Spring to Latin America\, Europe\, and Hong Kong also struck hard and have brought many important lessons. Join us for reading and discussion probing three connected themes: \n\nMass street protest since Occupy. We will analyze the rich legacy of largely leaderless mass mobilizations as well as new labor struggles\, locally and globally\, over the last fifteen years.\nCrowdsourcing the Revolution: Digital possibilities\, real-world limitations in networked movements. How has digital communications media changed the organizing landscape since the Arab Spring? A critical assessment of the politics and practicalities of digital networking and communication for effective political strategies.\nFrom mass mobilization to accumulating power against capitalism: new long-term strategy for socialism. What remains important and what has changed in connecting strategy and organization?\n\nReadings will include selections from newly published analyses of and theoretical reflection on recent struggles in the United States and globally: \nIf We Burn: The Mass Protest Decade and the Missing Revolution\, by Vincent Bevins (PublicAffairsBooks)\nTwitter and Tear Gas:  The Power and Fragility of Networked Protest\, by Zeynap Tufekci (Yale)\nCommunism and Strategy: Rethinking Political Mediations\, by Isabelle Garo (Verso)\nNeither Vertical nor Horizontal: A Theory of Political Organization\, by Rodrigo Nunes (Verso) \nBringing direct experience from Brazil\, France\, Turkey\, and the United States\, these authors invite reconsideration of political and organizational strategy in light of the worldwide extent of recent struggles. SUMMARY:Animals\, Capitalism\, Marxism:   A Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join the authors of two major works on animals and capitalism for an event exploring the potential and limits of Marxist theory for addressing the roles and fates of nonhuman animals\, as well as ways to connect anticapitalist struggles to animal liberation and environmental justice. Dinesh Joseph Wadiwel and Alex Blanchette bring to the Marxist Education Project an ongoing conversation they have been conducting this spring as Visiting Fellows at the Harvard Law School’s Animal Law & Policy Program. Wadiwel is the author of Animals and Capital and Blanchette is the author of Porkopolis: American Animality\, Standardized Life\, and the Factory Farm. Both books have recently been featured in MEP reading groups. \nDinesh Wadiwel is Associate Professor in Human Rights and Socio-Legal Studies at The University of Sydney. He has been active in anti-poverty and disability rights movements. Previous books include The War against Animals and\, as co-editor\, Foucault and Animals (Brill\, 2016). \nAlex Blanchette is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Environmental Studies at Tufts University. He also co-edited How Nature Works: Rethinking Labor on a Troubled Planet\, which analyzes how non-human beings are enlisted into capitalist work regimens. His current research addresses the politics of quitting meatpacking\, based on ethnographic interviews with ex-workers from across the United States. \n

SUMMARY:Trotsky in New York Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Socialists and Immigrants in the Lower East Side\nJoin Alex Steinberg for a historical walking tour of Lower Manhattan as we explore some of the places where Leon Trotsky visited and worked during his nine week stay in New York in early 1917. \nWe will explore the culture of the radicalized immigrant communities of Yiddish-speaking Jews from Eastern Europe as well as German\, Russian\, Italian and Greek immigrants. These communities supported a thriving socialist movement in New York.  And in 1917\, ferment and struggle increased dramatically as America entered World War I on April 6\, 1917 and Russia’s revolutionary wave exploded a few months later. \nAfter beginning at Cooper Union\, we will walk to 77 St. Marks Place\, which housed the offices of the Russian language newspaper Novy Mir and where Trotsky and other future Bolshevik leaders worked daily. From there\, the tour will walk to the building of the Jewish Daily Forward in Seward Park\, where we will learn of Trotsky’s dramatic confrontation with more conservative socialists. As we walk we will pass by a number of places that were important in understanding the history of the social struggles of immigrants in a New York very different than the city we know today. \nLed by Alex Steinberg who has taught a number of classes with the Marxist Education Project. \nMeet in front the main entrance of The Great Hall of Cooper Union\, behind the statue of Peter Cooper\, East 7th Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues. \n

SUMMARY:David McNally: Marx and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:A recording of this May 18\, 2024\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nWe marked the tenth anniversary of the Marxist Education Project with this keynote talk by David McNally on Marx and colonialism. The concluding chapter of Capital volume 1 tackles “the modern theory of colonization\,” yet Marx only half-delivers on the promise implied. Rather than present a full-fledged account of capitalist colonialism\, he pivots back to Europe and the processes of primitive accumulation. McNally fills in crucial gaps in Marx’s text\, suggesting directions in which he might have gone in analyzing colonial relations and the globalization of capitalism outside of Europe – centering bondage\, slavery\, colonialism\, and racism as foundational elements of global capitalism. \nDavid McNally is a good friend of the Marxist Education Project. Our most successful reading groups in the past 10 years featured his book Blood and Money: War\, Slavery\, Finance and Empire\, and we have also studied his Global Slump: The Economics and Politics of Crisis and Resistance. David is the Cullen Distinguished Professor of History and Business at the University of Houston (UH) and Director of the Center for the Study of Capitalism. Earlier he taught political economy at York University Toronto for over thirty years. David is the editor-in-chief of Spectre\, a biannual and online journal of Marxist theory\, strategy\, and analysis.

SUMMARY:Palestine: Celebrating 75 Years of Literature
DESCRIPTION:Read Palestinian fiction\, poetry\, and related literature in weekly meetings with the MEP’s Literature Group. The ongoing catastrophe in the Middle East breaks our hearts daily. As part of our mission to explore creative political resistance to oppression\, we will read several novels and poems by Palestinian authors. The novels selected for this session include prominent and emerging writers investigating themes since 1947 of armed resistance\, class\, the refugee experience\, and women’s experience of conflict. \nWe invite participants to add to our selections\, published from 1949 to the present\, and tentatively include: \nThings You May Find HIdden in My Ear by Mosab Abu Toha; Minor Detail\, by Adania Shibli; selected stories by Ghassan Kanafani; Out of Time: The Collected Stories of Samira Azzam\, Arabesques by Anton Shammas\, The Arsonists’ City by Hala Alyan\, Wild Thorns\, by Sahar Khalifeh; Passage to the plaza\, by Sahar Khalifeh; A Day in the Life of Abed Salama; Palestine +100\, edited by Basma Ghalayini. \nConvened by Jacqueline Cantwell\, who became involved with the MEP’s Literature Group because of her love of Victor Serge’s novels. SUMMARY:Fascism\, Antifascism\, Gaza\, and Political Strategy
DESCRIPTION:Where does the rising wave of authoritarianism and “late fascism” fit in the global relations of force at work today?   And what paths of resistance work in response?  \nThe war in Gaza has brought to a head the left’s strategic dilemmas facing new\, overt forms of fascism. Questions include the historical relationship of settler colonialism and national forms of fascism; the horrific escalation of the long war on Palestine; the opportunities and dangers for the left in national elections in the US and other countries.   \nWe will explore these questions through three points of departure that touch on race\, gender\, settler colonialism\, fossil fascism\, and the carceral state.   \n\nRashid Khalidi\, The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance\, a moving\, unnerving essential reading today to understand the background to the present war. \nAlberto Toscano’s Late fascism: Race\, Capitalism and the Politics of Crisis. Drawing especially on Black radical and anti-colonial theories of fascism\, Toscano gives us powerful tools and perspectives to understand fascism as a changing\, evolving process. \nAndreas Malm and the Zeitkin Collective\, White Skin\, Black Fuel: On the Danger of Fossil Fascism. SUMMARY:Reading Science Fiction Politically: Diverging Futures
DESCRIPTION:In Palestine +100: Stories from a Century after the Nakba\, edited by Basma Ghalayini\, as well as other recent books\, Palestinian authors have begun to discover the power of science fiction. “Everyday life\, for [Palestinian writers] is a kind of dystopia.” In this situation\, “The real future –the actual future — is unknowable. But for SF writers\, the mere idea of ‘things to come’ is license to re-imagine\, re-configure\, and re-interrogate the present.” \nThis spring\, the MEP Science and Visionary Fiction reading group will use this exciting new collection — and related political analyses of the war and political situation now as well as additional short fiction published elsewhere–to expand our understanding of the situation and struggle now in Palestine. Since the recent financial crises\, the expression “liberal reform” has come to evoke austerity and economic malaise\, especially for the working classes and a segment of the middle class. Conte’s historical research demonstrates that the chief purpose of such reforms has been to integrate semi-peripheral states into the capitalist world-economy. Rules\, institutions\, attitudes\, and procedures are imposed in accord with the economic and political interests of capitalist élites and hegemonic states – first by Britain\, then by the United States. In all situations\, the velvet glove barely conceals the armored fist. In a recent report prepared for Amazon Worker Solidarity\, they challenge understandings of “monopoly” common in mainstream economics as well as among sections of the left. \nAmazon’s “bigness” and lack of a direct competitor would seem to suggest that it should be considered a monopoly. And yet\, far from exhibiting the tell-tale signs of increasing monopoly prices\, inefficiency\, and technological stagnation\, Amazon has engaged in cutthroat price competition\, built a highly efficient and technologically advanced logistics system\, and unleashed competitive forces whose effects have reverberated across the retail sector and beyond. Moreover\, Amazon’s distinct vertically integrated structure\, competing across a range of sectors including retail\, e-commerce\, logistics\, online search engines\, and media entertainment – each dominated by large firms – suggests that today’s giant corporations are not significantly encumbered by barriers to entry. \nStephen Maher is Assistant Professor of Economics at SUNY Cortland\, and Co-Editor of the Socialist Register. With Scott Aquanno he co-authored The Fall and Rise of American Finance: From J.P. Morgan to Blackrock (Verso\, 2024). The entire history of industrial capitalism is punctuated by recurring waves of automation to reduce labor costs and turnover time\, each time provoking strong resistance by the affected workforce. This reading group will probe the history both of AI and computer technology specifically and of working-class resistance to capitalist automation in general. In eight weekly sessions we will read\, discuss\, and critique two recent works: Breaking Things at Work: The Luddites Are Right About Why You Hate Your Job\, by Gavin Mueller; and The Eye of the Master: A Social History of Artificial Intelligence\, by Matteo Pasquinelli. DESCRIPTION:Written in three volumes over thirty-five years\, Henri Lefebvre’s Critique of Everyday Life is a major manifesto of humanist Marxism\, and a clarion call for revolutionary praxis through sustained critique of daily living. “Lefebvre pushed philosophy out into the streets\,” the critic McKenzie Wark has written; his work has influenced fields as diverse as sociology\, cultural studies\, architecture and urban planning\, as well as movements including the Situationist International and the activists of May 1968. \nThe suggested text for this open-ended reading group is the three-volume Critique of Everyday Life\, available in paperback or e-book from Verso Books. No previous knowledge of Marxism or Henri Lefebvre’s work is required to participate. \nConvening this reading group\, Steve Knight has been involved as both a participant and reading group co-leader with the MEP since 2016. He is a former university literature and writing instructor\, and has also worked in finance. \nThe group will meet weekly on Wednesdays from 2-3:30pm US ET\, beginning February 5\, 2025. Dennis Broe examines this history and sheds light on the ingrained power\, the structural class and racial imbalances\, and the wanton devastation of a city organized not for its people but for its elites. Using Mike Davis’s classic Ecology of Fear as a blueprint\, Broe will put the still smoldering fires in context by looking at five areas: the geological long durée of a land of fires\, earthquakes\, tornados and mudslides; the ecological relationship of the fires to ever more intense global warming; the neoliberal moment of the deterioration of the state in its domestic and global dimensions; the region’s sedimented class and racial inequalities (exemplified by the recently devastated African-American community of Altadena); and the altered character of Los Angeles–and especially “Hollywood”–as no longer simply a site of imagined disasters but one that is now all too real. \nDennis Broe\, a journalist\, critic and scholar who has taught at the Sorbonne and spoken at many MEP events\, is the author of many books on film noir\, media\, and television\, including five novels set in Los Angeles in the 1940s and 50s\, the latest of which is The Dark Ages\, about the coming of McCarthyism to Hollywood.

DESCRIPTION:A video of this February 22\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nPresenting Bertolt Brecht’s Adaptations and Anti-capitalist Aesthetics Today\, a new book by Anthony Squiers. The author will provide an overview of Brecht’s revolutionary Marxist aesthetic and examine its usefulness as a weapon in today’s struggles. \nSquiers’s book\, published by Brill\, examines Brecht’s theory and method of adaptation\, using four key Brechtian concepts: Fabel\, gestus\, estrangement effects\, and historicizing. Using that framework\, it analyzes four Brechtian adaptations: The Tutor\, Don Juan\, “Socrates Wounded\,” and Kriegsfibel\, concluding that Brecht is useful for anti-capitalist aesthetics today because through him one can foster a new consciousness which enables the creation of better social conditions. The book is of value to theatrical practitioners\, artists\, and theorists. \nAnthony Squiers is a faculty member at AMDA College of the Performing Arts and co-editor of E-CIBS\, the performance journal of the International Brecht Society. He is author of An Introduction to the Social and Political Philosophy of Bertolt Brecht.

DESCRIPTION:Thursdays in February\, Starting February 6\, at 7:00 pm US ET \nIn February\, the Literature Reading Group will leave countries with extensive literature translated into English for Burundi\, an East African nation considered the poorest country in the world. Burundi has had only two novels translated into English. Both novels take as a backdrop the country’s history of tribal conflict between Tutsi and Hutu in the lives of two young boys. \nFebruary 6 – Baho! A Novel by Roland Rugero (Author)\, Christopher Schaefer (Translator). 91 pages  When Nyamuragi\, an adolescent mute\, attempts to ask a young woman in rural Burundi for directions to an appropriate place to relieve himself\, his gestures are mistaken as premeditation for rape. To the young woman’s community\, his fleeing confirms his guilt\, setting off a chain reaction of pursuit\, mob justice\, and Nyamuragi’s attempts at explanation. Young Burundian novelist Roland Rugero’s second novel Baho!\, the first Burundian novel to ever be translated into English\, explores the concepts of miscommunication and justice against the backdrop of war-torn Burundi’s beautiful green hillsides. \nFebruary 13 and 20 – Small Country by Gaël Faye (Author) 2019 192 pages\, Burundi\, 1992. For ten-year-old Gabriel\, life in his comfortable expatriate neighborhood of\nBujumbura with his French father\, Rwandan mother and little sister Ana\, is something close to paradise. \nThese are carefree days of laughter and adventure – sneaking Supermatch cigarettes and gorging on stolen mangoes – as he and his mischievous gang of friends transform their tiny cul-de-sac into their kingdom. \nBut dark clouds are gathering over this small country\, and soon their peaceful existence will shatter when Burundi\, and neighboring Rwanda\, are brutally hit by civil war and genocide.\nA novel of extraordinary power and beauty\, Small Country describes an end of innocence as seen through the eyes of a child caught in the maelstrom of history. DESCRIPTION:A video of this March 26\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nAs some of the most powerful capitalists in history are openly disavowing political democracy and calling for the unbridled rule of private wealth\, now is a good time to revisit Karl Marx’s revolutionary republicanism and his ideas about political power and social classes. In his recently published Citizen Marx: Republicanism and the Formation of Karl Marx’s Social and Political Thought\, Bruno Leipold argues that Karl Marx’s thinking was deeply informed by republicanism. Challenging common depictions of Marx that downplay or ignore his commitment to politics\, democracy\, and freedom\, Leipold shows that Marx viewed democratic political institutions as crucial to overcoming the social unfreedom and domination of capitalism.  \nPlacing Marx’s republican communism in its historical context—but not consigning him to that context—Leipold traces Marx’s shifting relationship to republicanism across three broad periods. First\, Marx began his political life as a republican committed to a democratic republic in which citizens held active popular sovereignty. Second\, he transitioned to communism\, criticizing republicanism but incorporating the republican opposition to arbitrary power into his social critiques. He argued that although a democratic republic was not sufficient for emancipation\, it was necessary for it. Third\, spurred by the events of the Paris Commune of 1871\, he came to view popular control in representation and public administration as essential to the realization of communism. Leipold shows how Marx positioned his republican communism to displace both antipolitical socialism and anticommunist republicanism. One of Marx’s great contributions\, Leipold suggests\, was to place politics (and especially democratic politics) at the heart of socialism. \nBruno Leipold is a fellow in political theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science.\nHe is the coeditor of Radical Republicanism: Recovering the Tradition’s Popular Heritage.

Anderson presents his newly published book\, The Late Marx’s Revolutionary Roads\, based on systematic analysis of Karl Marx’s “Ethnological Notebooks” and related Marx texts from his final years\, 1869-1883. \nIn these writings\, Marx traveled beyond the boundaries of capital and class in the Western European and North American contexts\, turning his attention to colonialism\, agrarian Russia and India\, Indigenous societies\, and gender. Anderson’s book focuses on how the late Marx sees a wider revolution that included the European proletariat but would be touched off by revolts by oppressed ethno-racial groups\, peasant communes\, and Indigenous communist groups\, in many of which women held great social power. As Anderson shows\, the late Marx elaborated a truly global\, multilinear theory of modern society and its revolutionary possibilities that continues to speak to us today. \nThe Late Marx’s Revolutionary Roads: Colonialism\, Gender\, and Indigenous Communism is available from Verso and from other online booksellers. \nKevin B. Anderson teaches at University of California\, Santa Barbara. Students\, faculty\, and staff at US colleges and universities who stand up for Palestinian human rights and stopping the genocide in Gaza are being punished by the administrations\, and in some cases – such as Mahmoud Khalil – threatened with deportation. They are charged with being antisemitic\, even though the movement is antiracist and a sizable fraction of the protesters are themselves Jewish. This campaign is being used as a smokescreen to dismantle programs in Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI) and set Jews against other minorities. Students\, faculty\, and staff are facing deportation\, arrest\, suspension\, termination\, and other draconian measures that undermine both civil liberties and academic freedom. \nAlan Wald is active in this controversy as it plays out at the University of Michigan (U-M)\, through his membership in the U-M Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine\, and nationally\, as a member of the Academic Council of Jewish Voice for Peace. He is the H. Chandler Davis Collegiate Professor Emeritus of English Literature and American Culture at U-M\, and formerly director of the U-M Department of American Culture. His academic specialty is the US Literary Left\, about which he has authored nine books\, and he is an editor of the journals Against the Current and Science & Society.
