Quinn Slobodian and Ben Tarnoff offer us much more than an assessment of the person of Musk. And they assess his business ventures and forays into government and politics only to go further. They invite us to consider what the new technology- and artificial intelligence-driven industries and the growing concentration of wealth and power mean for capitalism\, for the world’s peoples\, and for political struggles ahead. \nTo aid in this discussion\, we will make available and mix in recently published and forthcoming texts from wide sources\, ranging from Pope Leo’s Encyclical on artificial intelligence to strategies for the “Third Reconstruction.” Participants have access to our community chat and our regularly updated study guide. \nWe study together to understand the wave of reaction which once again has washed over politics\, its reflection in both long historical currents and fast-changing global trends\, and ways to think strategically about advancing in new directions for the socialist left.

SUMMARY:The Aesthetics of Resistance: Art and Fascism in the 1930s
DESCRIPTION:Join ongoing weekly sessions of the MEP Literature Group as we read together The Aesthetics of Resistance\, the masterwork of German author Peter Weiss. This trilogy of historical novels opens in 1937 and details the interactions of the narrator and his peers and family with historical figures of the European left engaged in the fight against fascism. As the characters encounter each other clandestinely to discuss political questions\, they also discuss works of art and question how the art of the past can support their resistance to a horrific present: what can art suggest for a future they may not live to see? \nJust as Weiss’s characters rely upon group discussion\, readers of this trilogy have often formed reading groups to aid their understanding of the novelist’s ambitions. The MEP is joining this leftist tradition. We will read these challenging novels slowly and discuss themes such as strategy and tactics in the fight against fascism\, and the works of art that inspired the characters’ discussions. DESCRIPTION:Join Russell Dale to read and discuss the works of Adam Smith in this ongoing study group. At present the group is reading Book 4 of Smith’s The Wealth of Nations. Smith’s notion of capital was important to Marx in the development of Marx’s understanding of capital\, and Marx frequently quoted from Smith in his discussions in Capital and other writings.\n \nWe are reading the Oxford University Press edition of the work – the full title is An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1976; General editors: R. H. Campbell and A. S. Skinner; textual editor: W. B. Todd). The book has been republished by The Liberty Fund and made widely available in a two-volume photographic reproduction edition. \nRussell Dale taught philosophy at Lehman College\, CUNY\, for many years but is now retired. He has been a collaborator of the Marxist Education Project since its inception. He is on the Editorial Board of the Marxist journal Science & Society.

DESCRIPTION:Monthly sessions\, on or about the last Saturday of each month \nThe MEP Literature Group continues its summer noir tradition with a dark beach read. Tijuana Straits by Kem Nunn is the story of how an ex-con\, Fahey\, a former champion surfer and now a worm farmer\, finds redemption. After saving a Mexican environmental activist\, Magdalena\, from a wild-dog attack\, he joins her in a confrontation against cartels profiting from toxic dumping in the border region between the United States and Mexico\, polluting not only the Pacific Ocean\, but the shanty towns of maquiladora workers. Nunn’s writing style recalls the cadences of his childhood within an evangelical church and the pacing of successful television script writing. \nReview our previous selections here. \nConvened by Jacqueline Cantwell and the MEP Literature Group. SUMMARY:Planetary Crises: 'Anthropocene Communism'
DESCRIPTION:Next monthly session September 16\nThe MEP’s Ecosocialist Study Group meets monthly to discuss important new works on the science and politics of the climate emergency\, the nature of economic and ecological crises\, and related topics. On September 16 we will consider Anthropocene Communism: Land and Capital in the Age of Disaster\, by Paul Guillibert. \nIn Anthropocene Communism\, the philosopher and activist Paul Guillibert proposes a new communism to move us beyond the ecological crisis of late capitalism. In a highly original reading of Karl Marx’s exchanges with Russian populists\, and informed by the cultural studies of Raymond Williams\, the José Carlos Mariátegui\, and Ernst Bloch\, Guillibert develops a philosophical naturalism that rethinks our relations with the environment. For Guillibert\, if we are to move beyond the Anthropocene\, we must develop new strategies. Communism must become environmentalism\, and political ecology can only become truly revolutionary once it is communist. \nOther recent books of interest to this group are listed here. \nFacilitated by Fred Murphy. Since 2015 Fred has led numerous MEP study groups on ecosocialism\, science and technology\, political economy\, the history of capitalism\, and Latin American politics. He studied and taught historical sociology at the New School for Social Research and reported from Latin America for several socialist publications.

Repeat. \nJoin editors Robert Ovetz and Kevin Van Meter for a discussion of Points of Departure: Refusal of Work and the Crisis of Capitalism: The Collected Writings of Harry Cleaver\, a definitive collection of Harry Cleaver’s best unpublished\, translated\, or lesser known writings – both historical and current – on the refusal of work\, class composition\, and the “inversion of the class perspective.” The book puts essential theoretical weapons into the hands of a new generation of militant workers and organizers re-energizing the class struggle. In these essays\, Cleaver rereads Marx to advance our collective search for points of departure from capitalism\, so we can end it before it ends us. \nRobert Ovetz holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Texas–Austin and is a senior lecturer in Political Science at San José State University\, where his work focuses on academic labor organizing and the labor movement. He is the author of When Workers Shot Back\, We the Elites\, and the forthcoming Rebels for the System. He is author of Guerrillas of Desire and the forthcoming Reading Struggles: Working-Class Self-Activity from Detroit to Turin and Back Again. His work has appeared in New Politics\, Notes from Below\, Dollars & Sense\, and other publications.
