We have compiled a reading list from an essay by Niloufar Talebi\, “100 Essential Books by Iranian Writers: An Introduction & Nonfiction\,” published on the Asian American Writers’ Workshop website. As we read\, one question we will keep in mind is that posed by Talebi: How does the publishing market limit Americans’ understanding of Iranian efforts? \nOver nine weeks we will read three novels set from the 1920s to the present: The Gardens of Consolation\, by Parisa Reza; Women Without Men\, by Shahrnush Parsipur; and Man of My Time\, by Dalia Sofer. Pearson\nIn his new book Capital’s Terrorists: Klansmen\, Lawmen\, and Employers in the Long Nineteenth Century\, Chad E. Pearson details how US employers at the turn of the twentieth century deployed a variety of tactics to secure their power in and out of workplaces. Through the Ku Klux Klan\, Law and Order Leagues\, Stockgrowers’ organizations\, and Citizens’ Alliances\, they applied extralegal repressive techniques – including whippings\, kidnappings\, drive-out campaigns\, incarcerations\, arsons\, hangings\, and shootings – as well as less overtly illegal tactics such as shutting down meetings\, barring speakers from lecturing through blacklists\, and book burning. Driven by unambiguous economic and managerial interests\, the birth of law-and-order politics as we know it can be found in 19th-century campaigns of organized terror against an assortment of ordinary people across racial lines.\nBook available from online sellers and from the publisher\, University of North Carolina Press \nChad E. Pearson is a labor historian at the University of North Texas and author of Capital’s Terrorists and Reform or Repression: Organizing America’s Anti-Union Movement. SUMMARY:Woman\, Life\, Freedom: Iran through the Lens of Antonio Gramsci
DESCRIPTION:With Piruz Alemi\nJuxtaposing documentary video footage with selected readings from Antonio Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks\, we will deepen our understanding of the current uprising among women and young people in Iran. Applying Gramsci’s dual perspective on Individuality/Universality\, Hegemony/Authority\, Force/Consent\, Terror/Legitimacy\, Strategy/Tactic\, Agitation/Propaganda\, and State/Civil Society\, we will examine spontaneous movements\, subaltern groups\, and the balance of domestic and international forces. These sessions will offer an opportunity for participants to document\, write\, screen films\, archive\, brainstorm\, and stay informed about the movement for Woman\, Life\, Freedom in Iran. They will be accessible to people at all levels of familiarity with Gramsci’s work and Iranian history and politics. \nConvened and facilitated by Piruz Alemi\, who holds a PhD in political economy from the New School for Social Research and an MFA in documentary film making from CCNY. He is director of the People of Color International Cultural Exchange Film Festival. He has taught at John Jay College/CUNY for 15 years and holds a research fellowship at Sheffield university in the UK.

SUMMARY:Building Alternatives in Rojava: Women’s Liberation & Cooperative Economy
DESCRIPTION:A presentation and discussion with Emre Sahin and Meghan Bodette\nSince the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War\, the peoples of Northeast Syria\, commonly known as Rojava\, have been building an alternative system of governance based on the principles of direct democracy\, gender equality\, pluralism\, anti-capitalism\, and social ecology. On the occasion of International Workers’ Day\, this event will focus on two of the pillars of Rojava’s vision as developed by the Kurdish movement\, namely women’s liberation and cooperative economy. Our speakers will trace the development of the Kurdish women’s movement and discuss the growth of Rojava’s cooperative economy\, highlighting women’s autonomous economic organizing. \nEmre Sahin is a participant and researcher of social movements\, particularly the Kurdish movement\, and a sociologist at Binghamton University.\nMeghan Bodette is a researcher focused on Turkey\, Syria and Kurdish issues. \n
