SUMMARY:Marx and the Body with Søren Mau
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Søren Mau will argue that Marx’s writings on the body have been underestimated and that a critical reconstruction of his analysis contains the basis for a theory of the corporeal roots of historicity and freedom. Throughout the history of Western thought\, the body has often been overlooked\, devalued\, or treated with mistrust and hostility. The failure to fully acknowledge human corporeality and its entanglement with the rest of nature is deeply connected to contemporary ecological crises\, and has since the 1980s been subjected to a thorough-going critique by scholars across the humanities and social sciences. Mau argues that the body occupies a central place in Marx’s thought\, and that a critical reconstruction of his dialectical understanding of the relationship between humans and the rest of nature and his concepts of corporeal organization\, labor\, tools and metabolism provides a foundation for an eco-Marxist theory of human nature and the corporeal roots of human historicity and freedom. \nThis talk is based on Søren Mau’s article “Karl Marx and the Body: Towards an Eco-Marxist Philosophical Anthropology” in Body & Society 32(1). \nSøren Mau is a political philosopher and the author of Mute Compulsion: A Marxist Theory of the Economic Power of Capital (Verso Books\, 2023). His work centers on critical theories of capitalism\, power\, ecology\, the body\, technology\, human nature\, and utopian thought\, with the central theme of freedom: its nature and sources\, the political and economic barriers to its realization under contemporary capitalism\, and its potential forms in a post-capitalist world.

SUMMARY:Social Reproduction Theory with Lisa Maya Knauer.
DESCRIPTION:This six-week reading group\, facilitated by Lisa Maya Knauer\, will focus on one of the germinal texts of social reproduction theory: Lise Vogel’s groundbreaking 1983 work\, Marxism and the Oppression of Women: Toward a Unitary Theory. Marx argued that capital accumulation depends not only upon the production of goods and the extraction of surplus value\, but also on the reproduction of capitalist social relations and above all of the class of people who have nothing to sell but their labor power. Social reproduction theory analyzes the processes whereby working classes and their conditions of life are sustained over time. Marx only sketched the concept in very broad terms\, but it was taken up and expanded upon by Marxist and radical feminists in the 1970s and 1980s. Vogel and others argued that women’s oppression under capitalism is linked to their role in social (as well as biological) reproduction. We will supplement Vogel’s classic work with some early writings by the Wages for Housework campaign and more recent scholarship\, including a newly published collection of Lise Vogel’s essays\, The Contested Domain. Some familiarity with Marxist and/or feminist theory is helpful but not essential. \nLisa Maya Knauer stumbled across the writings of the Wages for Housework campaign in the mid-1970s when she was a college student. A few years later\, she started reading Marx’s Capital at the MEP’s predecessor\, the School for Marxist Education. She is a co-founder of the MEP and has led our Capital Volume I reading groups for the past few years. SUMMARY:AI versus Labor: Luddism and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Weekly sessions on Tuesdays at 1 pm through December 2024 \nIs Artificial Intelligence (AI\, sic) really the dire threat to the future of humanity as even some of its proponents claim\, or is it a more mundane and familiar threat to working people who face loss of their livelihoods and/or further speed-up and alienation? The entire history of industrial capitalism is punctuated by recurring waves of automation to reduce labor costs and turnover time\, each time provoking strong resistance by the affected workforce. This reading group will probe the history both of AI and computer technology specifically and of working-class resistance to capitalist automation in general. In eight weekly sessions we will read\, discuss\, and critique two recent works: Breaking Things at Work: The Luddites Are Right About Why You Hate Your Job\, by Gavin Mueller; and The Eye of the Master: A Social History of Artificial Intelligence\, by Matteo Pasquinelli. Both are available in paper and eBook format from the publisher\, Verso Books. Additional reading selections will be provided in PDF format. \nFacilitated by Fred Murphy. DESCRIPTION:A video of this April 29\, 2023\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nWith Author Madison Van Oort\nBeneath the success of fast fashion\, a grimmer story is told by Madison Van Oort in Worn Out: How Retailers Surveil and Exploit Workers in the Digital Age and How Workers Are Fighting Back. Going undercover in two of the world’s largest fast fashion stores in New York City\, she observed firsthand how data and surveillance shape the lives of the people who do the actual producing and selling. Van Oort’s interviews with dozens of front line workers and labor activists show how workers are fighting back\, and her research exposes the exploitative reality of retail labor as digital tools lubricate the shift toward just-in-time retail by collecting real-time data on not only customer behavior but also worker performance. Automated scheduling platforms\, biometric time clocks\, and cashier metrics increase these workers’ already heightened insecurity. One of the first ethnographies of this “thriving” industry\, Worn Out pulls open the curtain between production and consumption and reveals the real cost of fast fashion. \nMadison Van Oort is a researcher based in Minneapolis. She received her PhD from the University of Minnesota in 2018\, and her academic writing has appeared in the journals Critical Sociology\, Ethnography\, and Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society as well as the anthology Captivating Technology: Race\, Carceral Technoscience\, and Liberatory Imagination in Everyday Life. Her compelling account “makes a complicated event understandable and vivid. Eichner’s rich portraits bring to life the freedom and empowerment the Communards experienced\, juxtaposed with the bloody repression of its final days.” (Sarah Fishman\, author of From Vichy to the Sexual Revolution: Gender and Family Life in Postwar France) \nAt dawn on March 18\, 1871\, Parisian women stepped between cannons and French soldiers\, using their bodies to block the army from taking the artillery from their working-class neighborhood. When ordered to fire\, the troops refused and instead turned and arrested their leaders. Thus began the Paris Commune\, a 72-day conflict that ended with the ferocious slaughter of communards by French troops. The Commune stands as a critical and pivotal moment in nineteenth-century history\, as the linchpin between revolutionary pasts and futures\, and as a crucible allowing glimpses of alternate possibilities. Upending hierarchies of class\, religion\, and gender\, the Commune emerged as a touchstone for the subsequent century-and-a-half of revolutionary and radical social movements. \nCarolyn J. Eichner teaches in the Departments of History and Women’s & Gender Studies at the University of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee. Her books include Surmounting the Barricades: Women in the Paris Commune and Feminism’s Empire. \nMitch Abidor is the editor and translator of Voices of the Paris Commune and Communards. A contributing writer for Jewish Currents\, his articles have also appeared in the New York Times\, the New York Review of Books\, Dissent\, and many other publications. \n  \nThe Paris Commune: A Brief History is available from Rutgers University Press.

These sessions will offer an opportunity for participants to document\, write\, screen films\, archive\, brainstorm\, and stay informed about the movement for Woman\, Life\, Freedom in Iran. They will be accessible to people at all levels of familiarity with Gramsci’s work and Iranian history and politics. \nConvened and facilitated by Piruz Alemi\, who holds a PhD in political economy from the New School for Social Research and an MFA in documentary film making from CCNY. He is director of the People of Color International Cultural Exchange Film Festival. He has taught at John Jay College/CUNY for 15 years and holds a research fellowship at Sheffield university in the UK.

SUMMARY:Woman\, Life\, Freedom: Iran through the Lens of Antonio Gramsci
DESCRIPTION:With Piruz Alemi\nJuxtaposing documentary video footage with selected readings from Antonio Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks\, we will deepen our understanding of the current uprising among women and young people in Iran. Applying Gramsci’s dual perspective on Individuality/Universality\, Hegemony/Authority\, Force/Consent\, Terror/Legitimacy\, Strategy/Tactic\, Agitation/Propaganda\, and State/Civil Society\, we will examine spontaneous movements\, subaltern groups\, and the balance of domestic and international forces. These sessions will offer an opportunity for participants to document\, write\, screen films\, archive\, brainstorm\, and stay informed about the movement for Woman\, Life\, Freedom in Iran. They will be accessible to people at all levels of familiarity with Gramsci’s work and Iranian history and politics. \nConvened and facilitated by Piruz Alemi\, who holds a PhD in political economy from the New School for Social Research and an MFA in documentary film making from CCNY. He is director of the People of Color International Cultural Exchange Film Festival. He has taught at John Jay College/CUNY for 15 years and holds a research fellowship at Sheffield university in the UK.

We have compiled a reading list from an essay by Niloufar Talebi\, “100 Essential Books by Iranian Writers: An Introduction & Nonfiction\,” published on the Asian American Writers’ Workshop website. As we read\, one question we will keep in mind is that posed by Talebi: How does the publishing market limit Americans’ understanding of Iranian efforts? \nOver nine weeks we will read three novels set from the 1920s to the present: The Gardens of Consolation\, by Parisa Reza; Women Without Men\, by Shahrnush Parsipur; and Man of My Time\, by Dalia Sofer. SUMMARY:Peru: Crisis and Uprising
DESCRIPTION:Banners read\, “They all must go! Jail the murderers! Elections now! Not one more death! Out with Dina Boluarte! Down with the racist civil-military dictatorship! Shut down Congress! For a people’s constituent assembly!”\nA video of this February 22\, 2023\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nA deepgoing political crisis is shaking Peru\, with massive protests by working people in the countryside and cities\, murderous repression by the armed forces and police\, and desperate efforts to restore order by a widely hated right-wing Congress and an unelected president\, Dina Boluarte. Women and Quechua and Aymara people from the Andean countryside and interior cities are taking a leading role in demanding that Boluarte and the Congress resign and that a democratic constituent assembly be convened to enable a government that represents Peru’s diversity rather than the exploitative\, racist elites of Lima. Join us as Peruvian left activist and sociologist Nicolás Lynch reports on and analyzes these dramatic events direct from Lima. Historian Gerardo Rénique moderates and joins the conversation. \nNicolás Lynch has published many books and essays on Peruvian politics and history. He has taught at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima and has served as Peru’s Minister of Education and as Ambassador to Argentina. Lynch holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the New School for Social Research. \nGerardo Rénique taught Latin American history for many years at the City College of New York. He is a frequent contributor to Socialism and Democracy and NACLA: Report on the Americas. His research interests include the political traditions of popular movements in Latin America\, and race\, national identity and state formation in Mexico.
