SUMMARY:The Aesthetics of Resistance: Art and Fascism in the 1930s
DESCRIPTION:Join ongoing weekly sessions of the MEP Literature Group as we read together The Aesthetics of Resistance\, the masterwork of German author Peter Weiss. This trilogy of historical novels opens in 1937 and details the interactions of the narrator and his peers and family with historical figures of the European left engaged in the fight against fascism. As the characters encounter each other clandestinely to discuss political questions\, they also discuss works of art and question how the art of the past can support their resistance to a horrific present: what can art suggest for a future they may not live to see? \nJust as Weiss’s characters rely upon group discussion\, readers of this trilogy have often formed reading groups to aid their understanding of the novelist’s ambitions. The MEP is joining this leftist tradition. We will read these challenging novels slowly and discuss themes such as strategy and tactics in the fight against fascism\, and the works of art that inspired the characters’ discussions. Familiarity with art history or with Europe in the 1930s is neither required nor expected. \nPublisher’s web pages for The Aesthetics of Resistance: Volume 1 / Volume 2 / Volume 3\nSecond-hand bookstores\, online resellers\, and public libraries may have copies of these books available. Jacqueline became involved with the MEP’s Literature Group because of her love of Victor Serge’s novels. Participating in an MEP reading group led by Serge translator Richard Greeman eight years ago\, Jacqueline found a community of readers eager to be challenged by the ambitions of international writers devoted to the creative potential of political fiction. Since the death of Michael Lardner\, who hosted and organized the Literature Group for so many years\, Jacqueline has taken the lead in furthering the group’s goals of exploring international fiction and encouraging thoughtful conversation.

DESCRIPTION:An eight-week study of Andrew Hartman’s recently published Karl Marx in America.  To read Karl Marx is to contemplate a world created by capitalism. People have long viewed the United States as the quintessential anti-Marxist nation\, but Marx’s ideas have inspired a wide range of people to formulate a more precise sense of the stakes of the American project. Historians have highlighted the imprint made on the United States by Enlightenment thinkers such as Adam Smith\, John Locke\, and Thomas Paine. Marx is rarely considered alongside these figures\, yet his ideas are the most relevant today because of capitalism’s centrality to American life. Karl Marx in America argues that even though Marx never visited America\, the country has been infused\, shaped\, and transformed by him. \nFacilitated by David Worley\, a member of the executive committee of the Marxist Education Project and a longtime associate of the Brecht Forum\, where he served a term as co-chair of the Board of Directors. David is a nonsectarian socialist\, active since the 1960s in support of a wide range of peace and social justice causes.

SUMMARY:Hubert Harrison: Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism
DESCRIPTION:A video of this November 8\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nBrian Kwoba‘s recently published Hubert Harrison: Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism introduces the working-class journalist\, activist\, and educator Hubert Henry Harrison (1883-1927)\, who generated an array of visionary solutions to the systemic injustices of his day. After blazing a trail for Black workers and organizers in the Socialist Party of America and the Paterson Silk Strike of 1913\, Harrison emerged as the most prominent Black freethinker and free lover of his generation. He also practiced armed self-defense and called for an anti-capitalist\, anti-imperialist “Colored International” alliance in the face of European colonization in Africa\, Asia\, and Latin America. Most spectacularly\, Harrison’s Liberty League of Negro Americans catalyzed the rise of Marcus Garvey and the largest international organization of African people in modern history. Because of his fearless radicalism\, however\, the full scope of Harrison’s revolutionary legacy has been largely erased from popular memory … until now. \nDr. Brian Kwoba was born in Manchester\, Connecticut\, and raised in Boulder\, Colorado. After earning his undergraduate degree in philosophy at Cornell University\, he spent six years teaching high school and middle school history and social studies in Boston before heading to the University of Oxford for his doctoral degree in history. Dr. Kwoba is currently an associate professor of history and also the director of African and African American Studies at the University of Memphis. Over the past two decades\, Dr. Kwoba has been an activist on issues including anti-imperialism\, immigrant workers rights\, climate justice\, Falastin\, decolonizing education\, pan-Africanism\, and the movement for Black lives. Soon after his arrival\, the author visits Gramsci’s grave and decides to take a volunteer position helping to maintain the cemetery. At the Non-Catholic Cemetery\, home also to the great Romantics\, Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Keats\, he keeps a watchful eye on Gramsci’s tombstone\, talking to some of his visitors\, admiring the roses and notes that Gramsci’s guests leave\, and communing with the sentinel cat that keeps watch near the gravesite. Thus begins Merrifield’s deep dive into Gramsci’s life almost a century after his death. \nThe result is a stunning portrait that offers fresh insights into nearly every aspect of Gramsci’s often tortured existence: a childhood scarred by severe health problems; his grasp of the culture of workers and peasants; his growing understanding of political economy; his friendship with the economist Piero Sraffa; his frustration trying to communicate with and be father to the son he never saw; his generosity and kindness. DESCRIPTION:Propaganda endlessly blares\, “There is no alternative” to capitalism. But there is always an alternative. Humanity need not be condemned to sit by helplessly as an uncontrollable economic and political system spanning the world brings us devastating inequality\, precarious jobs\, environmental destruction\, and life-threatening global warming. Pete Dolack’s latest book\, What Do We Need Bosses For?: Toward Economic Democracy\, analyzes past and present efforts to establish systems of economic democracy on a national or society-wide basis. In this context the book dissects the mounting inequalities of capitalism and discusses theoretical ideas as to how we might organize a better world. \nWorking people have repeatedly sought to create such a world. They have organized to reverse their subordinate positions in capitalist production and take charge of their working lives and their workplaces through egalitarian movements. Political democracy is impossible without economic democracy. Economic democracy\, in turn\, is impossible under capitalism. As ever more people realize the present world system offers them nothing but more hardship\, movements to create a better world inevitably will rise again. \nAlternatives discussed in the book include workers’ self-management in Yugoslavia\, workers’ control in Czechoslovakia\, the social-property area of Allende-era Chile\, the democratic confederalism of Rojava\, the cooperatives of Cuba and the communes of Venezuela\, with brief discussions of a few other examples\, including co-management in Tanzania\, Chinese industrial cooperatives and British work-ins. \nIn addition to What Do We Need Bosses For?\, Pete Dolack is also the author of It’s Not Over: Learning From the Socialist Experiment\, a book examining the 20th century’s socialist experiments so we can do it better in the 21st century. He publishes on various websites\, including CounterPunch\, ZNet\, The Ecologist\, Dandelion Salad and his own Systemic Disorder blog. As an activist\, Pete has participated in efforts around human rights\, environmental\, trade and social issues\, among them the No Spray Coalition\, the Brooklyn Greens\, New Yorkers Against Fascism\, Amnesty International and\, most recently\, Trade Justice New York Metro.

SUMMARY:Reading Marx in the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:An eight-week reading group centered on Kohei Saito’s newly published Marx in the Anthropocene: Toward the Idea of Degrowth Communism\, with side glances at Saito’s critics and further elaborations of the notion of “degrowth communism.” Saito’s book\, says Gareth Dale\, offers us “the next step in a transformation of our understanding of ‘Marx’s ecology.’ For his Marx\, human society arises from nature: it is simultaneously of it and against it\, in that humans are conscious of their relationship to nature and consciously shape it\, in a relationship that develops historically. The term that captures this is metabolism\, referring to humanity’s interaction with nature through social labor—a relationship that becomes increasingly riven the more it is subsumed under capital.” Through a close examination of Marx’s unpublished notes on natural science and anthropology from the 1870s\, Saito uncovers Marx’s late recognition that the productive forces “do not automatically prepare the material foundation for new post-capitalist society but rather exacerbate the robbery of nature.” Thus he presents us with a Marx who in his final years was effectively advocating “degrowth communism.” \nFacilitated by Fred Murphy\, who has led numerous MEP study groups on Marxism\, ecosocialism\, science and technology\, and Latin American history and politics.
