SUMMARY:The Aesthetics of Resistance: Art and Fascism in the 1930s
DESCRIPTION:Join ongoing weekly sessions of the MEP Literature Group as we read together The Aesthetics of Resistance\, the masterwork of German author Peter Weiss. This trilogy of historical novels opens in 1937 and details the interactions of the narrator and his peers and family with historical figures of the European left engaged in the fight against fascism. As the characters encounter each other clandestinely to discuss political questions\, they also discuss works of art and question how the art of the past can support their resistance to a horrific present: what can art suggest for a future they may not live to see? \nJust as Weiss’s characters rely upon group discussion\, readers of this trilogy have often formed reading groups to aid their understanding of the novelist’s ambitions. The MEP is joining this leftist tradition. We will read these challenging novels slowly and discuss themes such as strategy and tactics in the fight against fascism\, and the works of art that inspired the characters’ discussions. Familiarity with art history or with Europe in the 1930s is neither required nor expected. \nPublisher’s web pages for The Aesthetics of Resistance: Volume 1 / Volume 2 / Volume 3\nSecond-hand bookstores\, online resellers\, and public libraries may have copies of these books available. \nConvened by Jacqueline Cantwell and the MEP Literature Group. Jacqueline became involved with the MEP’s Literature Group because of her love of Victor Serge’s novels. Participating in an MEP reading group led by Serge translator Richard Greeman eight years ago\, Jacqueline found a community of readers eager to be challenged by the ambitions of international writers devoted to the creative potential of political fiction. Since the death of Michael Lardner\, who hosted and organized the Literature Group for so many years\, Jacqueline has taken the lead in furthering the group’s goals of exploring international fiction and encouraging thoughtful conversation.

DESCRIPTION:An eight-week study of Andrew Hartman’s recently published Karl Marx in America.  To read Karl Marx is to contemplate a world created by capitalism. People have long viewed the United States as the quintessential anti-Marxist nation\, but Marx’s ideas have inspired a wide range of people to formulate a more precise sense of the stakes of the American project. DESCRIPTION:A video of this November 8\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nBrian Kwoba‘s recently published Hubert Harrison: Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism introduces the working-class journalist\, activist\, and educator Hubert Henry Harrison (1883-1927)\, who generated an array of visionary solutions to the systemic injustices of his day. After blazing a trail for Black workers and organizers in the Socialist Party of America and the Paterson Silk Strike of 1913\, Harrison emerged as the most prominent Black freethinker and free lover of his generation. He also practiced armed self-defense and called for an anti-capitalist\, anti-imperialist “Colored International” alliance in the face of European colonization in Africa\, Asia\, and Latin America. Most spectacularly\, Harrison’s Liberty League of Negro Americans catalyzed the rise of Marcus Garvey and the largest international organization of African people in modern history. Because of his fearless radicalism\, however\, the full scope of Harrison’s revolutionary legacy has been largely erased from popular memory … until now. \nDr. Brian Kwoba was born in Manchester\, Connecticut\, and raised in Boulder\, Colorado. After earning his undergraduate degree in philosophy at Cornell University\, he spent six years teaching high school and middle school history and social studies in Boston before heading to the University of Oxford for his doctoral degree in history. Dr. Kwoba is currently an associate professor of history and also the director of African and African American Studies at the University of Memphis. Over the past two decades\, Dr. Kwoba has been an activist on issues including anti-imperialism\, immigrant workers rights\, climate justice\, Falastin\, decolonizing education\, pan-Africanism\, and the movement for Black lives. DESCRIPTION:A video of this March 26\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nAs some of the most powerful capitalists in history are openly disavowing political democracy and calling for the unbridled rule of private wealth\, now is a good time to revisit Karl Marx’s revolutionary republicanism and his ideas about political power and social classes. In his recently published Citizen Marx: Republicanism and the Formation of Karl Marx’s Social and Political Thought\, Bruno Leipold argues that Karl Marx’s thinking was deeply informed by republicanism. Challenging common depictions of Marx that downplay or ignore his commitment to politics\, democracy\, and freedom\, Leipold shows that Marx viewed democratic political institutions as crucial to overcoming the social unfreedom and domination of capitalism.  \nPlacing Marx’s republican communism in its historical context—but not consigning him to that context—Leipold traces Marx’s shifting relationship to republicanism across three broad periods. First\, Marx began his political life as a republican committed to a democratic republic in which citizens held active popular sovereignty. Second\, he transitioned to communism\, criticizing republicanism but incorporating the republican opposition to arbitrary power into his social critiques. He argued that although a democratic republic was not sufficient for emancipation\, it was necessary for it. Third\, spurred by the events of the Paris Commune of 1871\, he came to view popular control in representation and public administration as essential to the realization of communism. Leipold shows how Marx positioned his republican communism to displace both antipolitical socialism and anticommunist republicanism. One of Marx’s great contributions\, Leipold suggests\, was to place politics (and especially democratic politics) at the heart of socialism. \nBruno Leipold is a fellow in political theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science.\nHe is the coeditor of Radical Republicanism: Recovering the Tradition’s Popular Heritage.

DESCRIPTION:King’s Triple Evils\, Modern Environmentalism\, and the ‘World Revolution’ of 1968\nA video of this November 6\, 2022\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel.\n\nOn April 4\, 1967\, Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, came out publicly against the Vietnam War in a speech entitled “Beyond Vietnam.” Beyond\, in that title\, meant everything. King not only broke with the liberal establishment\, which viewed the war as a separate issue from racism and as an aberration in American foreign policy. King simultaneously presented a radical critique that linked racism and exploitation at home and abroad and began to elaborate a vision of an American socialism animated by a searing indictment of capitalism’s “triple evils” (racism\, militarism\, and class exploitation). Such a socialism would be grounded in a triple alliance encompassing the antiwar\, civil rights\, and labor movements. In this talk\, Jason W. Moore addresses the missed opportunity for a program of planetary justice as the “Environmentalism of the Rich” came to the fore after 1968 and overshadowed King’s appeal for a radical turn. As King underscored in his final months\, justice cannot be effectively pursued piece by piece. The “whole society” with and within the web of life must be reinvented\, inasmuch as we are “all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality\, tied into a single garment of destiny.” At the end of the Capitalocene and the beginning of the planetary inferno\, climate justice – and socialist strategy – must proceed as if “all life were interrelated.”\nJason W. Moore\nJason W. Moore is an environmental historian and historical geographer at Binghamton University\, where he is Professor of Sociology. His books include Capitalism in the Web of Life (2015)\, Anthropocene or Capitalocene? (2016)\, and (with Raj Patel)\, A History of the World in Seven Cheap Things (2017). Moore’s books and essays on environmental history\, capitalism\, and social theory – translated into over 20 languages – have been recognized with numerous academic awards. He co-coordinates the World-Ecology Research Network.

SUMMARY:The European Radical Left: Movements and Parties Since the 1960s
DESCRIPTION:with author Giorgos Charalambous\nIs today’s left really new? How has the European radical left evolved?\nGiorgos Charalambous answers these questions by looking at three moments of rapid political change – the late 1960s to late 1970s; the turn of the millennium; and post-2008. He challenges the conventional understanding of a ‘new left’\, drawing out continuities with earlier movements and parties. Charalambous examines the ‘Long ’68’\, symbolized by the May uprisings in France\, which saw the rise of new left forces and the widespread criticism by younger radical activists of traditional communist and socialist parties. He puts this side by side with the turn of the millennium when the Global Justice Movement rose to prominence and changed the face of the international left\, and also the period after the financial crash of 2008 and the rise of anti-austerity politics which initiated the most recent wave of new left parties such as Podemos in Spain and Syriza in Greece. \nWith a unique ‘two-level’ perspective\, Charalambous approaches the left through both social movements and party politics\, looking at identities\, rhetoric and organization\, and bringing a fresh new approach to radical history\, as well as assessing challenges for both activists and scholars. \nThis book is available to download through the Open Access program. \nGiorgos Charalambous is Assistant Professor of Political Science at the Department of Politics and Governance\, University of Nicosia. He is also the co-convenor of the Left Radicalism Specialist Group at the Political Studies Association. DESCRIPTION:  \npresentations and discussion with MICHAEL BRIE\, JEAN-NUMA DUCANGE and KIERAN DURKIN \nThis presentation taking place in New York City at 1:30 to 3:30 PM is taking place at 6:30 to 9:30 PM (GMT) \nOn the basis of new publications of her Polish works and more\, in Rosa Luxemburg: A Revolutionary Marxist at the Limits of Marxism\, Luxemburg’s strategic approaches are located in an Eastern European context. Michael Brie will present on how the authors discuss Luxemburg’s unique analyses of the first experiments in socialist participation in government\, of the first Russian revolution and of the forms of accumulation of capital to outline the foundations of her novel understanding of both democratic-socialist revolution and of a society that would point beyond social democracy as well as Bolshevism – a vision that will gain new significance in the twenty first century. \nJules Guesde represents the first book-length study of the French socialist leader translated into the English language. Jean-Numa Ducange’s scholarly biography of Guesde seeks to put his record on proper historical footing\, closely analysing both archival sources and accounts by his contemporaries. The book begins with his early life and the mark left on him by the Paris Commune and exile. The book concludes with an examination of Guesde’s contested legacy. \nRaya Dunayevskaya’s Intersectional Marxism brings to life her writings on state capitalism (part of her socio-economic critique of Stalinism\, fascism\, and the welfare state)\, to her writings on Rosa Luxemburg\, Black and women’s liberation\, and labor\, we are offered indispensable resources for navigating the perils of sexism\, racism\, capitalism\, and authoritarianism. This collection of essays\, from a diverse group of writers\, brings to life Dunayevskaya’s important contributions. Dunayevskaya’s Marxist-Humanism is recovered for the twenty-first century and turned\, as it was with Dunayevskaya herself\, to face the multiple alienations and de-humanizations of social life. \nMICHAEL BRIE is Head of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung in Berlin\, Germany. Recent books include Rediscovering Lenin: Dialectics of Revolution and Metaphysics of Domination (2019) and Karl Polanyi in Dialogue: A Socialist Thinker of Our Times (2017). \nJEAN-NUMA DUCANGE is Professor at Rouen University and member of Institut Universitaire de France. He is the co-director of the French journal Actuel Marx (PUF) and Austriaca (PURH)\, and one of the best scholars about the history of socialism (France\, Germany\, Austria). \nKIERAN DURKIN is Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellow at University of York\, UK and has been a Visiting Scholar at University of California Santa Barbara\, where he studied the Humanist Marxist tradition. Sam Farber has assembled and synthesized a wealth of historical material so as to assess the extent to which the disappearance of Soviet democracy was due to objective circumstances such as the Civil War and how much of the magnitude of this was the result of Bolshevik politics and ideology. There will be a presentation on the book as well as plenty of time for attendees to pose questions on this important work\, published by Verso Books. \nSAM FARBER was born and raised in Marianao\, Cuba\, coming to the United States in February 1958. SUMMARY:Considerations on Bolshevism Before Stalinism
DESCRIPTION:Worker’s Control and Trade Union Independence\, Freedom of The Press\, Repression and Socialist Legality\nwith The MEP’s Revolutions Study Group\n \nThis group has been organized around the reading of Samuel Farber’s Before Stalinism: The Rise and Fall of Soviet Democracy\, (Verso\, 1990) that critically looks at the Bolshevik rise to power\, their attitude towards the soviets\, ideas on bourgeois and proletarian democracy\, factory committees and worker control of production. There will also be readings from a wide variety of writes (some very critical of Farber) such as David Mandol\, Eric Marot\, Alexander Rabinowitch\, Paul LeBlanc\, Lars Lih\, Kevin Murphy\, Steve Smith\, and if time\, participant contemporaries to the Russian Revoution such as Victor Serge. On January 9 we begin examining from Chapter 2 of Farber’s book. The book is organized and written in such a fashion that there is no problem joining the group for the reading and discussion from that point forward. \nWhile considering questions such as: Were the Bolsheviks inherently authoritarian? What was ‘democratic centralism’? Is the Bolshevik type organization necessary for revolutionary change? What exactly was the role of the Bolsheviks in the revolution? What were the Soviets? How did the soviets come into being? Did soviets represent a higher form of democracy? What was the attitude of the Bolsheviks towards them? Should the left today strive towards building similar institutions? What was dual power? What does worker control of production mean? We are now meeting for 10 to 12 more sessions.
