DESCRIPTION:2nd in the Socialist Register 58 Series: Old Polarizations\, New Contradictions: The Crisis of Centrism\nBILL FLETCHER                  Trump and the Danger of Right-wing Populism in the US\nSAMIR GANDESHA            Identity Crisis: The Politics of False Concreteness\nINGAR SOLTY                       Market Polarization Means Political Polarization \nBill Fletcher’s essay on the “Danger of Right-Wing Populism in the US” presents a careful appraisal of the forces marshalled on the right over the course of the Trump presidency\, leading to the insurrection of January 2021. Fletcher’s longstanding contention\, put forth in his widely-noted ‘Stars and Bars’ essay in the Politics of the Right volume\, was of the dangers of a rightwing mass movement emerging in the US. \nSamir Gandesha seeks an answer in what he identifies as ‘a fragmentation of the universalism that had historically underwritten the struggle for socialism’ leading to what he terms a ‘politics of false concreteness’ centered on forms of identity politics on both the left and the right. Indeed\, in the absence of a ‘left universalism’\, Gandesha argues\, ‘we can only expect the logic of polarization to drive an already accelerating authoritarianism\, as rightwing demagogues mobilize support based on racialized grievances’. This can only be met by a ‘class identity’ that seeks a universalism ‘in its own self-dissolution’\, that is\, in the struggle against classes as such and thus capitalism. \nIngar Solty’s “Market Polarization Means Political Polarization” is a third assessment of this particular moment. Solty’s contention is that the social polarizations that result from the market processes set in motion by neoliberalism bring with them a political polarization in the form of fissures in the party systems of liberal democracies\, allowing the hard right new political space to occupy and permitting varied forms of authoritarian nationalism to take hold. The title is taken from a 1938 poem by Bertolt Brecht that inspired the theme of this work; now more than ever\, we are not finished with the past and the past is not finished with us. The project was launched with Trump’s inauguration and continued until he was defeated at the ballot box. It begins with the president’s triumphal entry into Washington DC. Beyond stretches a country where the Mexican border walls meets Japanese internment camps from the 1940s at a vanishing point. It chronicles the desecration of public lands for profit\, the battle of Charlottesville\, the arrest of undocumented workers across the country and the detention of asylum seekers at the border. It illustrates the toll of COVID 19\, the work of the nurses\, the breadlines\, young people painting Black Lives Matter mapping a road ahead\, the storming of the Capitol and finally the flickering light of what might be a new beginning. Zoe will also talk about her essay also included in the book “The Troublemakers: History Painting in the Real World” in which she explores how painters have explored themes of social justice. She brings the writing of both Walter Benjamin and Bertolt Brecht to bear on how we can think through the representation of history and lived experience. \nZOE BELLOF is an artist and filmmaker based in New York. She aims to make radical art that educates\, entertains\, and provokes discussion. Most importantly\, as her work attests\, she believes protest should be vibrant\, humorous and colorful\, a carnival of resistance to light the way in dark times. Zoe’s work has been featured in international exhibitions and screenings; venues include the Whitney Museum\, Site Santa Fe\, the MHKA museum in Antwerp\, and the Pompidou Center in Paris. However she particularly enjoys working in alternative venues that are free and open to the community for events and conversations. These have included in New York City; The Coney Island Museum\, Participant\, Momenta and The James Gallery at the CUNY Graduate Center. She has been awarded fellowships from. The Graham Foundation\, the Guggenheim Foundation\, The Foundation for Contemporary Arts\, The Radcliffe Institute at Harvard and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She is a professor at Queens College CUNY. \nBOOKLYN\, INC.  is a non profit organization founded in 1999 and located in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn. Their mission is to promote artists’ books as art and research material and to assist artists and organizations in documenting\, exhibiting\, and distributing their artwork and archives. They specifically assist artists and organizations committed to environmental and social justice.

White supremacy is both the keystone (in the arch) and the Achilles heel of U.S. bourgeois democracy\, the historic form of bourgeois rule in the US.] \n \nIt is a vulnerable point because it is a historically developed and unresolvable internal contradiction of US bourgeois democracy. It is the decisive vulnerable point because—as history has repeatedly proved—the basic class contradictions in bourgeois democracy can never fully mature until and unless the anti-proletarian nature of white supremacy has been completely established in the minds of the proletarian masses.” \nTheodore W. Allen spent the next 30 years researching the primary sources and writing The Invention of the White Race (2 volumes) which provides a historical materialist analysis of racial oppression and the white identity which emerged as a principal form of social control over rebellious laboring class of European and Africans in the pattern setting colonies of Virginia and Maryland in the late 17th early 18th century. \nThe Revolutions Study Group (started at the Brecht Forum) has met since 2009. The group has recently completed an in-depth study of W.E.B. Dubois’ Black Reconstruction and this past winter and spring studied White Supremacy and Bourgeois Social Control.

DESCRIPTION:“Forces of production and social relations – two different sides of the development of the social individual – appear to capital as mere means\, and are merely means for it to produce on its limited foundation. In fact\, however\, they are the material conditions to blow this foundation sky-high…” —Karl Marx\, The Grundrisse  \nPerhaps the most curious and least understood aspect of Marx’s work is his method of analysis. Marx viewed all his economic laws as tendencies and it is hard to deny that those tendencies are becoming more and more the realities of today’s capitalism. However\, to understand our society we need to do more than reading and accepting his concepts\, we must critically analyze them and look for the way of thinking that produced them. It is with this goal in my mind that we should embark on a journey through the long and complex sentences of the Grundrisse. This work is perhaps the best representation of the process of thinking that found its culmination in Capital and we will be engaging with it during our study. Without a doubt\, this will be a long and arduous process but we should always keep in mind that “there is no royal road to science and only those who do not dread the fatiguing climb of its steep paths have a chance of gaining its luminous summits. Continuing on November 6\,  we will read from “The Chapter on Money” utilizing the Penguin edition of Marx’s Grundrisse. Recordings of prior sessions are available to all who would like to review. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Governing Surplus and Survival in Global Capitalism\nwith author Susanne Soederberg\n \nIn the 1870s\, Friedrich Engels published a series of articles on “The Housing Question\,” wherein he argued that decent\, secure housing for the working class is incompatible with the commodity nature of urban property and human labor power in the capitalist system\, as the movements of capital inevitably will undermine all piecemeal reforms. Soederberg pushes beyond dominant debates by treating low-rent housing as a unique commodity that provides a necessary place for the societal reproduction of labor power while being integrated into the global dynamics of capitalism. She argues that historical and geographical configurations of monetized governance\, including landlords\, employers and inter-scalar state practices\, have served to reproduce urban displacements and obfuscate their gendered\, class and racialized underpinnings. SUMMARY:Political Economy of Labor Repression in the United States
DESCRIPTION:with author Andrew Kolin\nAndrew Kolin presents a detailed explanation of the essential elements that characterize capital’s relations to the working class and how capital relies on various forms of repressing reform and revolutionary movements by workers. The repression is directly linked to the class struggle between capital and labor. The starting point examines labor repression after the American Revolution. Andrew’s book then follows the role of the state along with the explosive growth of American capitalism to analyze the long history of capital and labor conflict with details of the US state being aligned with the interests of capital throughout American history. \nWholesale exclusion of labor from a fundamental role in framing policy in these institutions was crucial in understanding the unfolding of labor repression. Repression emerges amid a social struggle to acquire and maintain control over policy-making bodies\, which pits the few against the many. In response\, labor attempts to push back against institutional exclusion in part by the formation of labor unions. Capital reacts to such actions using repression to prevent labor from having a greater role in social institutions. For instance\, this is played out inside the workplace as capital and labor engage in a political struggle over the function of the workplace. Given capital’s monopoly of ownership\, capital employs various means to repress labor at work\, including the introduction of technology\, mass firings\, crushing strikes\, and the use of force to break up unions. \n \n  \nThe role of the state is not to be overlooked in its support of elite control over production\, as well as aiding through legal means the growth of a capitalist economy in opposition to labor’s conception of greater economic democracy. DESCRIPTION:Capital\, A Critique of Political Economy\, Karl Marx\nVolume I: The Process of Production of Capital\nThird Session Covering Chapter 16 thru Chapter 25\nwith Mary Boger \nVolume I of Capital begins the scientific presentation of the laws of motion that underlie the developmental processes that has led to the realities of our contemporary human condition. In only 200-300 years capitalist relations of re/production have absorbed all pre-capitalist societies into its circulation of commodities making all that exists\, whether real or imaginary\, means for investing money to make more money. Private ownership and control over our earth’s natural resources by the owners of capital and separation of the world’s population from any direct access to our conditions of life and what we produce have reduced our human productive activity to a thing that is bought and sold at the bidding of capital. \nUncovering the how\, what and for whom our life processes are determined based on the logic of using money in order to make more money is a journey we need to take if we are to consciously situate ourselves within our given historical process as effective political/social/universal actors. Marx’s scientific presentation of the laws of motion of capitalist development begins by analyzing the fundamental or elemental form which wealth takes in our society\, the commodity. Understanding this form leads us to the most basic law that grounds social reproduction in societies under the domination of capital\, the law of value. Therefore\, in Session I\, our first task was to break through the appearance and reveal the social content of the commodity form\, the beginning of the unraveling of the why and how of what we necessarily\, under the domination and exploitation of capital\, experience every day in our lives. \nThe first four Parts of Volume I revealed the historical process of development that led to industrial capital\, the productive base/infrastructure required for the generalization of the capitalist production of commodities as the dominate social form throughout all our societies and nations today. Session 3\, Chapters 15 through 25\, will trace this development and reveals new dynamics and contradictions inherent to the logic of capitalist accumulation\, culminating in Chapter 25\, The General Law of Capitalist Accumulation. These developmental processes continue to be played out to this day and are witnessed in the immensity of wealth for a few at one pole of humanity\, poverty at another\, ruthless misuse and degradation of nature\, and reduction of the human subject\, the producing masses of real individuals\, to an alienated object for capitalist exploitation. Volume I is essential to understanding the analysis as it is carried out in Volumes II & III. \nNEW STUDENTS: (Please Note) Part I through Four of Volume I lay out the most fundamental concepts and laws of capitalist development and its internal contradictions that are necessary to fully understand all that follows as Marx explicates the dynamics particular to the historical process and dynamics of the production of social life that we are engaged in reproducing in our everyday life\, where the logic of re-production is based on money making more money. The First and Second 12 Week Sessions covering Part I through Part IV have been recorded. They are available to be viewed through the MEP’s Vimeo.
