Repeat. \nJoin editors Robert Ovetz and Kevin Van Meter for a discussion of Points of Departure: Refusal of Work and the Crisis of Capitalism: The Collected Writings of Harry Cleaver\, a definitive collection of Harry Cleaver’s best unpublished\, translated\, or lesser known writings – both historical and current – on the refusal of work\, class composition\, and the “inversion of the class perspective.” The book puts essential theoretical weapons into the hands of a new generation of militant workers and organizers re-energizing the class struggle. In these essays\, Cleaver rereads Marx to advance our collective search for points of departure from capitalism\, so we can end it before it ends us. \nRobert Ovetz holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Texas–Austin and is a senior lecturer in Political Science at San José State University\, where his work focuses on academic labor organizing and the labor movement. He is the author of When Workers Shot Back\, We the Elites\, and the forthcoming Rebels for the System. He writes on labor for Dollars & Sense and other publications. \nKevin Van Meter holds a PhD in Geography\, Environment and Society from the University of Minnesota\, serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Labor and Society\, and is a union organizer and labor educator who writes on contemporary labor issues\, labor history\, and working-class self-organization. He is author of Guerrillas of Desire and the forthcoming Reading Struggles: Working-Class Self-Activity from Detroit to Turin and Back Again. His work has appeared in New Politics\, Notes from Below\, Dollars & Sense\, and other publications.

SUMMARY:'Beneath the Wage' with Annie McClanahan
DESCRIPTION:A conversation with author Annie McClanahan on Beneath the Wage: Tips\, Tasks\, and Gigs in the Age of Service Work (Zone Books\, 2026). Today\, 80 percent of U.S. workers do service work\, from delivering takeout to mopping floors to teaching. Do these jobs have anything in common? Who is doing this work? And what kind of labor politics does it generate? \n\nAlthough service work has often been treated as a footnote to modern capitalism\, this talk uses service work to challenge conventional assumptions about how work is waged\, regulated\, managed\, and automated. It explores three paradigmatic types of contemporary service labor—superexploited tipwork\, deskilled clerical microwork\, and informalized gigwork—and argues that work done “beneath the wage” depends on racialized and gendered forms of economic domination and is often excluded from labor organizing and regulation. Yet service work has also begun to generate a new politics of solidarity\, one that rejects the compromises of industrial unionism and attends instead to the problem of reproduction in a low-wage economy. \nAnnie McClanahan is Professor of English at the University of California–Irvine. She directs the UC Marxist Institute for Research\, is Faculty Co-Director for UCI-LIFTED\, which offers a bachelors degree to incarcerated students\, and is the Vice President for the Council of UC Faculty Associations. She is also the author of Dead Pledges: Debt\, Crisis\, and 21st Century Culture (Stanford University Press\, 2017).
