SUMMARY:The Politics of Collecting with Eunsong Kim
DESCRIPTION:In her new book\, The Politics of Collecting: Race and the Aestheticization of Property\, Eunsong Kim traces how racial capitalism and colonialism situated the rise of US museum collections and conceptual art forms. Ranging from the conception of philanthropy devised by the robber barons of the late nineteenth century to ongoing digitization projects\, Kim provides a new history of contemporary art that accounts for the complicated entanglement of race\, capital\, and labor behind storied art institutions and artists. Drawing on history\, theory\, and economics\, Kim challenges received notions of artistic success and talent and calls for a new vision of art beyond the cultural institution. \nEunsong Kim is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Northeastern University. Her practice spans literary studies\, critical digital studies\, poetics\, translation\, visual culture and critical race & ethnic studies. She is also the author of Gospel of Regicide (2017) and\, with Sung Gi Kim\, a translation of Kim Eon Hee’s poetic text Have You Been Feeling Blue These Days? (2019). In 2021 she co-founded the journal offshoot\, an arts space for transnational activist conversations.

DESCRIPTION:A video of this May 17\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nAuthor Andy Merrifield presents Roses for Gramsci\, a remarkable personal journey through the life and writings of the great Sardinian Marxist\, Antonio Gramsci. \nIn the summer of 2023\, Merrifield and his family move from the UK to Rome to begin a new life. Soon after his arrival\, the author visits Gramsci’s grave and decides to take a volunteer position helping to maintain the cemetery. At the Non-Catholic Cemetery\, home also to the great Romantics\, Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Keats\, he keeps a watchful eye on Gramsci’s tombstone\, talking to some of his visitors\, admiring the roses and notes that Gramsci’s guests leave\, and communing with the sentinel cat that keeps watch near the gravesite. Thus begins Merrifield’s deep dive into Gramsci’s life almost a century after his death. \nThe result is a stunning portrait that offers fresh insights into nearly every aspect of Gramsci’s often tortured existence: a childhood scarred by severe health problems; his grasp of the culture of workers and peasants; his growing understanding of political economy; his friendship with the economist Piero Sraffa; his frustration trying to communicate with and be father to the son he never saw; his generosity and kindness. SUMMARY:The Fallout of War: Metonyms of Militarism

Part One \nWar: what is it\, and what is it good for? War might seem like a foregone conclusion or a state of exception; in either case it is an archetype of crisis. In two linked sessions\, the Yale Working Group on Globalization and Culture presents their collective research on a keyword of contemporary cultural studies – war – and investigates its many valences as lived reality and as metaphor. Trade wars can become militarized\, and hot wars can look cold\, depending on your vantage point. The race war\, Twitter tells us\, is impending; but in an age of US forever war(s)\, understanding war as punctuating the flow of history seems to be entirely insufficient. War is\, some argue\, a way of life\, a structuring condition that shapes our examinations of the history of the present. The war on drugs\, the war on poverty\, the war on COVID\, the war on Christmas – war is also a ubiquitous metaphor\, a self-righteous idiom that announces moral panic and articulates racial logic in otherwise terms. But metaphors of war have also influenced various radical traditions and social movements\, including anti-war activism and Gramsci’s deployment of metaphors of war in his theorizing of hegemony. Taking account of war as constitutive of the present\, the working group explores war’s meanings as event\, analytic\, and metaphor. \nPanel II Presentations:\nAanchal Saraf theorizes nuclear fallout in the Pacific as war itself moving through the landscapes\, bodies\, and generations of the Marshall Islands and its peoples.\nJavier Porras Madero explores “Dirty Wars” in Latin America for their classed\, raced\, and gendered dimensions as well as their implications for how we may understand conflict\, violence\, and the global Cold War.\nMadeleine Han’s presentation focuses on the Han River both as the face of South Korean postwar economic development (referred to as the “Miracle on the Han”) and as a repository of submerged cold war memories.\nMaru Pabón examines the dominant genres and styles of two poetic projects that emerged out of anticolonial/anti-imperial struggles in Palestine and Cuba\, shiʿr al-muqawama and coloquialismo\, in relation to the distinct temporalities of the two conflicts.\nMonique Flores Ulysses considers U.S. cultural texts seemingly disconnected from war but nonetheless imbricated in war-making during the early years of the Global War on Terror.\nMichael Denning chairs this panel. \nThe Yale Working Group on Globalization and Culture is an interdisciplinary cultural studies laboratory that has been practicing collective research at Yale University for two decades. Over the years\, we have presented work collaboratively at numerous cultural studies conferences as well as at the Marxist Education Project\, the Left Forum\, Occupy Boston\, and the World Social Forum. Past projects have been published as “Going into Debt\,” online in Social Text’s Periscope\, and as “Spaces and Times of Occupation” in Transforming Anthropology; a collective interview regarding “Matters of Life and Death” appeared in Revue Française d’Études Américaines. The current members—Aanchal Saraf\, Damanpreet Pelia\, Javier Porras Madero\, Jessica Marion Modi\, Lucero Estrella\, Madeleine Han\, Maru Pabón\, Michael Denning\, Monique Flores Ulysses\, and Salonee Bhaman—work in American studies\, history\, Latinx studies\, literary criticism\, African-American studies\, Asian American studies\, comparative literature\, and womens\, gender and sexuality studies.

These selections are in honor of Michael Lardner\, an enthusiast of Balestrini’s writing and the convener of the MEP’s literature group for many years. Balestrini\, born in 1935\, had by the early 1960s an active literary career in Gruppo 63\, edited journals\, and participated in computer experiments. From literary spats\, he moved to political involvement during Italy’s Years of Lead (ca. 1968-1988). Upon being charged with membership in a guerrilla group he fled to Paris and later to Germany. We Want Everything chronicles a rebellion centered at the Fiat Mirafiori factory in Turin; The Unseen continues the story of Italy’s explosive 1970s when the young and unemployed of cities joined workers in an unexpectedly militant movement known simply as Autonomy (Autonomia). Its “politics of refusal” called forth draconian repression from the employers and the state. We will begin with selections of Balestrini’s poetry.

We will read several works by the Italian author Nanni Balestrini\, including We Want Everything and The Unseen. These selections are in honor of Michael Lardner\, an enthusiast of Balestrini’s writing and the convener of the MEP’s literature group for many years. Balestrini\, born in 1935\, had by the early 1960s an active literary career in Gruppo 63\, edited journals\, and participated in computer experiments. From literary spats\, he moved to political involvement during Italy’s Years of Lead (ca. 1968-1988). Upon being charged with membership in a guerrilla group he fled to Paris and later to Germany. We Want Everything chronicles a rebellion centered at the Fiat Mirafiori factory in Turin; The Unseen continues the story of Italy’s explosive 1970s when the young and unemployed of cities joined workers in an unexpectedly militant movement known simply as Autonomy (Autonomia). Its “politics of refusal” called forth draconian repression from the employers and the state. We will begin with selections of Balestrini’s poetry.

SUMMARY:Parade of the Old New with artist/author Zoe Beloff
DESCRIPTION:A presentation and discussion of Booklyn’s important new accordion fold-out 40-panel book with painter and author Zoe Bellof\n \nA discussion by Zoe Beloff about her new 40-panel accordion book that reproduces\, Parade of the Old New\, an epic panorama on cardboard panels\, a 40 meter long  allegory of the American body politic. The title is taken from a 1938 poem by Bertolt Brecht that inspired the theme of this work; now more than ever\, we are not finished with the past and the past is not finished with us. The project was launched with Trump’s inauguration and continued until he was defeated at the ballot box. It begins with the president’s triumphal entry into Washington DC. Beyond stretches a country where the Mexican border walls meets Japanese internment camps from the 1940s at a vanishing point. It chronicles the desecration of public lands for profit\, the battle of Charlottesville\, the arrest of undocumented workers across the country and the detention of asylum seekers at the border. It illustrates the toll of COVID 19\, the work of the nurses\, the breadlines\, young people painting Black Lives Matter mapping a road ahead\, the storming of the Capitol and finally the flickering light of what might be a new beginning. Zoe will also talk about her essay also included in the book “The Troublemakers: History Painting in the Real World” in which she explores how painters have explored themes of social justice. She brings the writing of both Walter Benjamin and Bertolt Brecht to bear on how we can think through the representation of history and lived experience. \nZOE BELLOF is an artist and filmmaker based in New York. She aims to make radical art that educates\, entertains\, and provokes discussion. Most importantly\, as her work attests\, she believes protest should be vibrant\, humorous and colorful\, a carnival of resistance to light the way in dark times. Zoe’s work has been featured in international exhibitions and screenings; venues include the Whitney Museum\, Site Santa Fe\, the MHKA museum in Antwerp\, and the Pompidou Center in Paris. However she particularly enjoys working in alternative venues that are free and open to the community for events and conversations. These have included in New York City; The Coney Island Museum\, Participant\, Momenta and The James Gallery at the CUNY Graduate Center. She has been awarded fellowships from. The Graham Foundation\, the Guggenheim Foundation\, The Foundation for Contemporary Arts\, The Radcliffe Institute at Harvard and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She is a professor at Queens College CUNY. \nBOOKLYN\, INC.  is a non profit organization founded in 1999 and located in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn. Their mission is to promote artists’ books as art and research material and to assist artists and organizations in documenting\, exhibiting\, and distributing their artwork and archives. They specifically assist artists and organizations committed to environmental and social justice.
