DESCRIPTION:Join the authors of two major works on animals and capitalism for an event exploring the potential and limits of Marxist theory for addressing the roles and fates of nonhuman animals\, as well as ways to connect anticapitalist struggles to animal liberation and environmental justice. Dinesh Joseph Wadiwel and Alex Blanchette bring to the Marxist Education Project an ongoing conversation they have been conducting this spring as Visiting Fellows at the Harvard Law School’s Animal Law & Policy Program. Wadiwel is the author of Animals and Capital and Blanchette is the author of Porkopolis: American Animality\, Standardized Life\, and the Factory Farm. Both books have recently been featured in MEP reading groups. \nDinesh Wadiwel is Associate Professor in Human Rights and Socio-Legal Studies at The University of Sydney. He has been active in anti-poverty and disability rights movements. Previous books include The War against Animals and\, as co-editor\, Foucault and Animals (Brill\, 2016). \nAlex Blanchette is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Environmental Studies at Tufts University. He also co-edited How Nature Works: Rethinking Labor on a Troubled Planet\, which analyzes how non-human beings are enlisted into capitalist work regimens. His current research addresses the politics of quitting meatpacking\, based on ethnographic interviews with ex-workers from across the United States. \n

SUMMARY:Mutant Ecologies in the Age of Genomic Capital
DESCRIPTION:The interconnected fields of genomic science\, genome editing\, and biotechnology have emerged over the past half-century as a revolution in the production of new life forms that have been eagerly adopted by agriculture\, pharmaceuticals\, textiles\, and other business sectors. While many – including the Nobel Committee – have heralded this as a “new epoch” of limitless possibilities for positive transformation\, In Mutant Ecologies: Manufacturing Life in the Age of Genomic Capital\, Erica Borg and Amedeo Policante show how genetic science has been deeply intertwined from its beginning with the raw imperatives of capital accumulation. “Genomic capital\,” the authors’ term for the use of genetic materials in industrial production\, has literally altered many of life’s metabolic processes in service to capital’s demands. Within a socio-historical context defined by the iron rules of competition and exploitation\, capital no longer contents itself with simply appropriating the living bodies of plants and animals but purposefully designs their internal metabolism\, and in that way it redesigns the countless living vectors that constitute the global biosphere. This biological revolution will ripple through the everyday lives of people everywhere. Erica and Amedeo will present Mutant Ecologies and Ariel Salleh and  Stuart Newman will discuss the book and initiate the conversation. \nBook available from the publisher\, Pluto Press. \nErica Borg is a geographer and political ecologist based at King’s College\, London. Their research focuses on the relations between capitalism\, colonialism\, patriarchy and ecological crisis. \nAmedeo Policante is a Researcher at the Nova University of Lisbon. His writings interrogate the nexus of extraction\, exploitation and expropriation that fuels the contemporary world market. He is the author of two books: The Pirate Myth and The New Mercenaries. \nAriel Salleh (discussant) is the author of Ecofeminism as Politics and numerous other books and essays on political ecology as an emerging study of humanity-nature relations. Her “embodied materialist” approach emphasizes the centrality of reproductive or regenerative labour in the world system. At present she is Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Humanities\, Nelson Mandela University\, South Africa. \nStuart Newman (discussant) is professor of cell biology and anatomy at New York Medical College and a leading scientific critic of the use of developmental biology to modify human species identity\, including cloning and germline genetic manipulation. Among his numerous books and publications\, Stuart is the co-author with Tina Stevens of Biotech Juggernaut: Hope\, Hype\, and Hidden Agendas of Entrepreneurial BioScience.

DESCRIPTION:A series of readings to commemorate\, celebrate\, and learn from the ecological/Marxist writings of Mike Davis (1946-2022). Davis’s works spanned urban studies to history\, geography to political science\, and more. They have become crucial reference points for the production of new knowledge by generations of scholars\, artists\, and activists. During 10 weekly sessions we will read and discuss key chapters from five of Mike Davis’s books: Planet of Slums\, Dead Cities\, Ecology of Fear\, Late Victorian Holocausts\, and Old Gods\, New Enigmas. \nConvened by Fred Murphy and Steve Knight\, who have co-led the MEP’s Ecosocialist Study Group since 2016.

Higgins). \nMarc Angenot\, FRSC\, a professor in McGill’s French Language and Literature Department for over forty years\, has been awarded the Prix du Québec Léon-Gérin for his outstanding contributions to the social sciences. He is world-renowned for his research and is widely considered the founder of Social Discourse Theory. Dr\, Patricia McManus is a senior lecturer in the Humanities at the University of Brighton. She is the founder of the Dystopia Project. Her research interests are the novel —in particular the problems involved in understanding genre as a productive force in literary history — and Marxism as a methodology for utopianism. Eric D. Smith. is professor of modern and contemporary British and Anglophone literature at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He is the author of Globalization\, Utopia\, and Postcolonial Science Fiction: New Maps of Hope (Pagrave\, 2012) and editor of Darko Suvin’s career-spanning collection Parables of Freedom and Narrative Logics: Positions and Presuppositions in Science Fiction and Utopianism in the Ralahine Utopian Studies Series (Peter Lang\, 2021).

SUMMARY:Socialist Register 2021: Life After the Pandemic with Christoph Hermann
DESCRIPTION:From Production for Profit to Provision for Need\nChristoph Hermann\nPerhaps the greatest flaw revealed by the Covid-19 crisis is capitalism’s addiction to profit. The main goal of capitalist production is the maximization of profit; the satisfaction of needs is only a by-product in the endless process of accumulation. This means that the economy cannot simply pause during a lockdown and continue when the pandemic is under control. The insecurity of future profits instantly pushed the economy into an existential crisis. As a result\, the crisis was not characterized by a lack of urgently needed supply\, as one may expect during a period of large-scale economic inactivity. \nWhile the coronavirus challenged the very foundations of the profit-driven economy\, the lockdown provided the environment with a much-needed break. The pausing of industrial production together with the restriction of transportation\, including international air travel\, significantly reduced carbon dioxide emissions and other pollution. As a result\, residents of smog-plagued cities such as New Delhi could suddenly see the sky. The crisis has shown that a focus on essential needs can provide breathing space for the global ecosystem. However\, at the same time the crisis also sounded the death knell to all attempts to solve the ecological crisis through profit-based incentives. The dramatic fall in oil prices caused by the decline in economic activities will undermine the shift to less damaging energy sources. \nIn sum\, what in a needs-based economy would be a formidable healthcare challenge and\, perhaps\, a major disruption of social life\, but not a crisis of social reproduction\, at least not as long as there is sufficient supply\, turned in the profit-driven economy of capitalism into an existential threat. The anxiety about falling profits could only be calmed by flooding investors\, businesses\, and credit institutions with massive amounts of money. As a result\, the US government will record the highest debt in its history. While debt is essential in a profit-driven economy\, it is pointless in a needs-based economy. When the goal is that everybody receives what she/he needs\, there is no need to go into debt. In this presentation Christoph will present some ideas for a needs-based economy. \n  \nChristoph Hermann is a Lecturer in History at University of California\, Berkeley. \n  \nAll events are sliding scale. DESCRIPTION:from Socialist Register 2021—Beyond Digital Capitalism: New Ways of Living\nUnlike earlier experiences\, with Covid-19 we see an emergence of the whole world as a stage where the drama unfolds. This is\, of course\, due to the technological shrinkage of time and space in our age – now\, microbes take flight. But the spectacular similitude of crises and responses at this level demonstrates how social structures\, ideologies\, and social values have converged globally. The rhetoric of war and the institution of quarantine\, where everyone is a warrior\, a victim\, and a suspect at the same time\, have mobilized individuals and communities to act out rituals that affirm bellum omnium contra omnes (the war of all against all)\, the foundation of capitalism. \nWhile the immediate task of controlling the current pandemic determines the actions of states\, medical institutions\, and research laboratories\, several critical microbiologists\, virologists\, and political economists have done well to ask the structural question about the metabolic and ecological rifts that have unleashed new dangers for humanity. But for the ecological crisis to become a ground to rethink structural transformation\, it is not enough to locate it in the wreckage that capitalism accumulates. It must be understood as constitutive to capitalist social relations\, having an intimate connection to the robbery of labor. It is in this sense that the particularization of these crises in the form of pathogens and impending diseases becomes crucial. This helps us to understand the ecological rift as central to everyday life and struggle in capitalism\, and also to imagine a transformational class politics. \nTo understand the reality behind and beyond today’s spectacular rituals of salutations for public hospital workers and those in so-called essential services as ‘warriors’\, we need to pay heed to what Norman Bethune meant when he exhorted his medical colleagues to ‘organize ourselves so that we can no longer be exploited as we are being exploited by our politicians’. It was his recognition of the mutual embeddedness of economics and pathology that defined Bethune’s unconventional life and work as a surgeon\, and transformed him into a revolutionary. The practice of socialized medicine\, as he conceptualized it\, was not simply a demand on the state and doctors\, but was\, rather\, a dimension of transforming liberatory politics translated in the field of health care. \nPratyush Chandra is a political activist and writer based in New Delhi. SUMMARY:Interpretation Machines: Contradictions of “Artificial Intelligence” in 21st Century Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:with Larry Lohmann\nBYOND DIGITAL CAPITALISM: NEW WAYS OF LIVING (presentation 3)\nSince the nineteenth century\, left movements have sought footholds among the ever-renewing contradictions of capitalist industrial mechanization and its relation to work and energy. These experiments\, begun by Marx\, remain fragmentary and contested. Yet the crises that twenty-first century digital mechanization presents and exacerbates may shed new light on this longer history of automation even as they confront the left with fresh puzzles. \nThis talk proposes three responses to these challenges. 1) It may be more useful to movement organizing to stress continuities between industrial-era and digital-era value-creation than to focus only on differences. 2) The contradiction between living and dead labor that Marx identified not only persists in today’s digital economy\, but also remains fundamental both to understanding crisis and to identifying possibilities for radical political change. 3) It may make more strategic sense for the left to approach the striking innovations in automation advanced over the past decade by the likes of Facebook\, Amazon\, Alibaba\, Microsoft\, and Apple as a new level of the mechanization of interpretive work than to promote mystifying labels such as artificial intelligence (AI). \nLarry Lohmann works with The Corner House\, a UK-based solidarity and research organization. \nAll tickets are sliding scale.
