DESCRIPTION:Banners read\, “They all must go! Jail the murderers! Elections now! Not one more death! Out with Dina Boluarte! Down with the racist civil-military dictatorship! Shut down Congress! For a people’s constituent assembly!”\nA video of this February 22\, 2023\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nA deepgoing political crisis is shaking Peru\, with massive protests by working people in the countryside and cities\, murderous repression by the armed forces and police\, and desperate efforts to restore order by a widely hated right-wing Congress and an unelected president\, Dina Boluarte. Women and Quechua and Aymara people from the Andean countryside and interior cities are taking a leading role in demanding that Boluarte and the Congress resign and that a democratic constituent assembly be convened to enable a government that represents Peru’s diversity rather than the exploitative\, racist elites of Lima. Join us as Peruvian left activist and sociologist Nicolás Lynch reports on and analyzes these dramatic events direct from Lima. Historian Gerardo Rénique moderates and joins the conversation. \nNicolás Lynch has published many books and essays on Peruvian politics and history. He has taught at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima and has served as Peru’s Minister of Education and as Ambassador to Argentina. Lynch holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the New School for Social Research. \nGerardo Rénique taught Latin American history for many years at the City College of New York. He is a frequent contributor to Socialism and Democracy and NACLA: Report on the Americas. His research interests include the political traditions of popular movements in Latin America\, and race\, national identity and state formation in Mexico.

SUMMARY:The Novels of Nanni Balestrini with the MEP Literature Group
DESCRIPTION:The MEP Literature Group resumes this fall/winter and continues its tradition of reading international political fiction. We will read several works by the Italian author Nanni Balestrini\, including We Want Everything and The Unseen. These selections are in honor of Michael Lardner\, an enthusiast of Balestrini’s writing and the convener of the MEP’s literature group for many years. Balestrini\, born in 1935\, had by the early 1960s an active literary career in Gruppo 63\, edited journals\, and participated in computer experiments. From literary spats\, he moved to political involvement during Italy’s Years of Lead (ca. 1968-1988). Upon being charged with membership in a guerrilla group he fled to Paris and later to Germany. We Want Everything chronicles a rebellion centered at the Fiat Mirafiori factory in Turin; The Unseen continues the story of Italy’s explosive 1970s when the young and unemployed of cities joined workers in an unexpectedly militant movement known simply as Autonomy (Autonomia). Its “politics of refusal” called forth draconian repression from the employers and the state. We will begin with selections of Balestrini’s poetry.

SUMMARY:The Novels of Nanni Balestrini with the MEP Literature Group
DESCRIPTION:The MEP Literature Group resumes this fall/winter and continues its tradition of reading international political fiction. We will read several works by the Italian author Nanni Balestrini\, including We Want Everything and The Unseen. These selections are in honor of Michael Lardner\, an enthusiast of Balestrini’s writing and the convener of the MEP’s literature group for many years. Balestrini\, born in 1935\, had by the early 1960s an active literary career in Gruppo 63\, edited journals\, and participated in computer experiments. From literary spats\, he moved to political involvement during Italy’s Years of Lead (ca. 1968-1988). Upon being charged with membership in a guerrilla group he fled to Paris and later to Germany. We Want Everything chronicles a rebellion centered at the Fiat Mirafiori factory in Turin; The Unseen continues the story of Italy’s explosive 1970s when the young and unemployed of cities joined workers in an unexpectedly militant movement known simply as Autonomy (Autonomia). Its “politics of refusal” called forth draconian repression from the employers and the state. We will begin with selections of Balestrini’s poetry.

SUMMARY:The Hard Right and the Political Parties of Capital
DESCRIPTION:2nd in the Socialist Register 58 Series: Old Polarizations\, New Contradictions: The Crisis of Centrism\nBILL FLETCHER                  Trump and the Danger of Right-wing Populism in the US\nSAMIR GANDESHA            Identity Crisis: The Politics of False Concreteness\nINGAR SOLTY                       Market Polarization Means Political Polarization \nBill Fletcher’s essay on the “Danger of Right-Wing Populism in the US” presents a careful appraisal of the forces marshalled on the right over the course of the Trump presidency\, leading to the insurrection of January 2021. Fletcher’s longstanding contention\, put forth in his widely-noted ‘Stars and Bars’ essay in the Politics of the Right volume\, was of the dangers of a rightwing mass movement emerging in the US. \nSamir Gandesha seeks an answer in what he identifies as ‘a fragmentation of the universalism that had historically underwritten the struggle for socialism’ leading to what he terms a ‘politics of false concreteness’ centered on forms of identity politics on both the left and the right. Indeed\, in the absence of a ‘left universalism’\, Gandesha argues\, ‘we can only expect the logic of polarization to drive an already accelerating authoritarianism\, as rightwing demagogues mobilize support based on racialized grievances’. This can only be met by a ‘class identity’ that seeks a universalism ‘in its own self-dissolution’\, that is\, in the struggle against classes as such and thus capitalism. \nIngar Solty’s “Market Polarization Means Political Polarization” is a third assessment of this particular moment. Solty’s contention is that the social polarizations that result from the market processes set in motion by neoliberalism bring with them a political polarization in the form of fissures in the party systems of liberal democracies\, allowing the hard right new political space to occupy and permitting varied forms of authoritarian nationalism to take hold. SUMMARY:Late Capitalist Fascism
DESCRIPTION:What if fascism can no longer be confined to political parties or ultra nationalist politicians but has become something much more diffuse that is spread across our societies as cultural expressions and psychological states? This is the thesis developed by Mikkel Bolt Rasmussen\, who argues that late capitalism has produced hollowed-out and exchangeable subjectivities that provide a breeding ground for a new kind of diffuse\, banal fascism. The overt and concentrated fascism of the new fascist parties thrives on the diffuse fascism present in social media and everyday life\, where the fear of being left behind and losing out has fuelled resentment towards foreigners and others who are perceived as threats to a national community under siege. Only by confronting both the overt fascism of parties and politicians and the diffuse fascism of everyday life will we be able to combat fascism effectively and prevent the slide into barbarism. \nMIKKEL BOLT RASMUSSEN is an art historian\, cultural critic and professor in Political Aesthetics at the University of Copenhagen. He has written books on the Situationist International\, politicized contemporary art and the revolutionary tradition. SUMMARY:Parade of the Old New with artist/author Zoe Beloff
DESCRIPTION:A presentation and discussion of Booklyn’s important new accordion fold-out 40-panel book with painter and author Zoe Bellof\n \nA discussion by Zoe Beloff about her new 40-panel accordion book that reproduces\, Parade of the Old New\, an epic panorama on cardboard panels\, a 40 meter long  allegory of the American body politic. The title is taken from a 1938 poem by Bertolt Brecht that inspired the theme of this work; now more than ever\, we are not finished with the past and the past is not finished with us. The project was launched with Trump’s inauguration and continued until he was defeated at the ballot box. It begins with the president’s triumphal entry into Washington DC. Beyond stretches a country where the Mexican border walls meets Japanese internment camps from the 1940s at a vanishing point. It chronicles the desecration of public lands for profit\, the battle of Charlottesville\, the arrest of undocumented workers across the country and the detention of asylum seekers at the border. It illustrates the toll of COVID 19\, the work of the nurses\, the breadlines\, young people painting Black Lives Matter mapping a road ahead\, the storming of the Capitol and finally the flickering light of what might be a new beginning. Zoe will also talk about her essay also included in the book “The Troublemakers: History Painting in the Real World” in which she explores how painters have explored themes of social justice. She brings the writing of both Walter Benjamin and Bertolt Brecht to bear on how we can think through the representation of history and lived experience. \nZOE BELLOF is an artist and filmmaker based in New York. She aims to make radical art that educates\, entertains\, and provokes discussion. Most importantly\, as her work attests\, she believes protest should be vibrant\, humorous and colorful\, a carnival of resistance to light the way in dark times. Zoe’s work has been featured in international exhibitions and screenings; venues include the Whitney Museum\, Site Santa Fe\, the MHKA museum in Antwerp\, and the Pompidou Center in Paris. However she particularly enjoys working in alternative venues that are free and open to the community for events and conversations. These have included in New York City; The Coney Island Museum\, Participant\, Momenta and The James Gallery at the CUNY Graduate Center. She has been awarded fellowships from. The Graham Foundation\, the Guggenheim Foundation\, The Foundation for Contemporary Arts\, The Radcliffe Institute at Harvard and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She is a professor at Queens College CUNY. \nBOOKLYN\, INC.  is a non profit organization founded in 1999 and located in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn. Their mission is to promote artists’ books as art and research material and to assist artists and organizations in documenting\, exhibiting\, and distributing their artwork and archives. They specifically assist artists and organizations committed to environmental and social justice.

Often taken to be a theory of the party as a “modern prince” derived from Machiavelli\, can this still be so in an epoch when political parties are everywhere in decline? In this reading\, Italy has failed to converge with the neoliberal reforms mounted by other European countries\, leaving it to trail behind the rest of the world. \nFirst They Took Rome offers a different perspective: Italy isn’t failing to keep up with its international peers but farther along the same path of decline they are following.
