Allen\nThis is a new edition combining both volumes into one book\nA reading and discussion group convened with Sean Ahern\n“Racial Capitalism\,” “Critical Race Theory\,” “Settler Colonialism\,” “Whiteness Studies\,” “The 1619 controversy\,” “Identity Politics\,” “Black Marxism\,” “Caste vs Race” identify some of the ideas\, lenses and explanations that contend for our attention.  A fair consideration of these and other contending approaches may all be well informed by studying the truly seminal work\, The Invention of the White Race by Theodore W Allen\, reading from the third edition\, released by Verso in January 2022 which combines both volumes into a single book with a new introduction by Jeffrey B. Perry\, Allen’s literary executor. (here is link to 40% off 3rd edition of The Invention of the White Race [2 volumes in one book]:  Verso) \nIn 1972\, after over 30 years of activism in the labor and communist movements\, Allen shared the following strategic insight with a new generation of revolutionaries: “The most vulnerable point at which a decisive blow can be struck against bourgeois rule in the United States is white supremacy.  White supremacy is both the keystone (in the arch) and the Achilles heel of U.S. bourgeois democracy\, the historic form of bourgeois rule in the US.  It is a vulnerable point because it is a historically developed and unresolvable internal contradiction of US bourgeois democracy.  It is the decisive vulnerable point because – as history has repeatedly proved – the basic class contradictions in bourgeois democracy can never fully mature until and unless the anti-proletarian nature of white supremacy has been completely established in the minds of the proletarian masses.” \nAllen spent the next 20 years researching the primary sources and writing his magnum opus.  It provides a historical materialist analysis of racial oppression and the white identity which emerged as a principal form of social control over a rebellious laboring class of Europeans and Africans in the pattern setting colonies of Virginia and Maryland in the 17th and early 18th century.  It is a history for today. \nSean Ahern was radicalized as a NYC high school student between 1968-1971 and was drawn to activism in labor struggles in the 70s and 80s with the American Postal Workers Union and the Transport Workers. DESCRIPTION:with author Jane Holgate\nIn Arise\, Jane Holgate argues that unions must revisit their understanding of power in order to regain influence and confront capital. Drawing on two decades of research and organizing experience\, Holgate examines the structural inertia of today’s unions from a range of perspectives: from strategic choice\, leadership and union democracy to politics\, tactics and the agency afforded to the majority of union members. \nIn the midst of a neoliberal era of economic crisis and political upheaval\, the labor movement stands at a crossroads. Union membership is on the rise\, but the ‘turn to organizing’ has largely failed to translate into meaningful gains for workers. SUMMARY:After the Pandemic: Rebuilding the Medicare for All Movement
DESCRIPTION:with Mark Dudzic \nThe world’s most expensive healthcare system failed catastrophically under the real-world structure test of the pandemic. This crisis drove home both the absurdity of linking healthcare to employment and the importance of treating healthcare as a decommodified public good. But the politics of the emerging post pandemic period are not conducive to big\, transformative initiatives like Medicare for All. Regime change\, economic disaster and Erdogan’s ambition to impose ‘one-man rule’ have shaken the foundations of Turkish political life. This presentation will look at the historical and current outcomes brough about by the authoritarian\, militarized civil life for Turkish workers. What will be the long term consequences for workers in Turkey? \nMoving beyond the headlines and personalities\, this book uncovers the real condition of the working class in modern Turkey. Combining field research and in-depth interviews\, this book offers cutting-edge analyses of workplace struggles\, trade unionism\, the AKP’s relationship with neoliberalism\, migration\, gender\, agrarian change and precarity\, as well as the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on workers. This volume also brings together a broad range of Turkish activists and scholars who consider what the dynamics and contradictions of working-class resistance against Turkey’s neoliberal authoritarian regime have become; worker self-management\, organized labor\, and class struggles in rural areas are examined. \nÇağatay Edgücan Şahin is an Associate Professor of Labor Economics at the University of Ordu\, Turkey. He has published various books including Human Capital and Human Resources: A Critical Approach (2011).\nMehmet Erman Erol is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Cambridge\, UK. SUMMARY:Parade of the Old New with artist/author Zoe Beloff
DESCRIPTION:A presentation and discussion of Booklyn’s important new accordion fold-out 40-panel book with painter and author Zoe Bellof\n \nA discussion by Zoe Beloff about her new 40-panel accordion book that reproduces\, Parade of the Old New\, an epic panorama on cardboard panels\, a 40 meter long  allegory of the American body politic. The title is taken from a 1938 poem by Bertolt Brecht that inspired the theme of this work; now more than ever\, we are not finished with the past and the past is not finished with us. The project was launched with Trump’s inauguration and continued until he was defeated at the ballot box. It begins with the president’s triumphal entry into Washington DC. Beyond stretches a country where the Mexican border walls meets Japanese internment camps from the 1940s at a vanishing point. It chronicles the desecration of public lands for profit\, the battle of Charlottesville\, the arrest of undocumented workers across the country and the detention of asylum seekers at the border. It illustrates the toll of COVID 19\, the work of the nurses\, the breadlines\, young people painting Black Lives Matter mapping a road ahead\, the storming of the Capitol and finally the flickering light of what might be a new beginning. Zoe will also talk about her essay also included in the book “The Troublemakers: History Painting in the Real World” in which she explores how painters have explored themes of social justice. She brings the writing of both Walter Benjamin and Bertolt Brecht to bear on how we can think through the representation of history and lived experience. \nZOE BELLOF is an artist and filmmaker based in New York. She aims to make radical art that educates\, entertains\, and provokes discussion. Most importantly\, as her work attests\, she believes protest should be vibrant\, humorous and colorful\, a carnival of resistance to light the way in dark times. Zoe’s work has been featured in international exhibitions and screenings; venues include the Whitney Museum\, Site Santa Fe\, the MHKA museum in Antwerp\, and the Pompidou Center in Paris. However she particularly enjoys working in alternative venues that are free and open to the community for events and conversations. These have included in New York City; The Coney Island Museum\, Participant\, Momenta and The James Gallery at the CUNY Graduate Center. She has been awarded fellowships from. The Graham Foundation\, the Guggenheim Foundation\, The Foundation for Contemporary Arts\, The Radcliffe Institute at Harvard and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She is a professor at Queens College CUNY. \nBOOKLYN\, INC.  is a non profit organization founded in 1999 and located in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn. Their mission is to promote artists’ books as art and research material and to assist artists and organizations in documenting\, exhibiting\, and distributing their artwork and archives. This cheerful message hides a reality of digital surveillance\, aggressive anti-union tactics and disciplinary layoffs. Reminiscent of the tumult of early industrial capitalism\, the hundreds of thousands of workers who help Amazon fulfil consumers’ desire are part of an experiment in changing the way we all work. \nIn this book\, Alessandro Delfanti takes readers inside Amazon’s warehouses to show how technological advancements and managerial techniques subdue the workers rather than empower them\, as seen in the sensors that track workers’ every movement around the floor and algorithmic systems that re-route orders to circumvent worker sabotage. He looks at new technologies including robotic arms trained by humans and augmented reality goggles\, showing that their aim is to standardize\, measure and discipline human work rather than replace it. \nDespite its innovation\, Amazon will always need living labor’s flexibility and low cost. And as the warehouse is increasingly automated\, worker discontent increases. Striking under the banner “we are not robots”\, employees have shown that they are acutely aware of such contradictions. SUMMARY:The Bisbee Deportation / The Battle of Blair Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Both of these new books are essential to having an understanding of the history of American class struggles.\nI’ll Forget It When I Die: The Bisbee Deportation of 1917 (AK Press\, 2021)\nMitchell Abidor\nDid you ever hear the story about 1\,186 men kidnapped in Arizona and dumped in a desert 200 miles away? \nOn July 12\, 1917\, in the mining town of Bisbee Arizona\, twelve hundred striking miners and their supporters were rounded up by forces organized by the town sheriff and the mining companies\, marched through the town\, parked in the town’s baseball field\, and then put in boxcars and shipped into the New Mexican desert. The deportees were largely members or supporters of the radical IWW labor union and mostly foreign-born. The roundup and deportation were both part of a xenophobic and anti-radical campaign being carried out by capital and their allies of local state and national police in complete coordination. This pattern was common throughout the country in the early days of US participation in World War I. The mine owners then took control of the town and patrols prevented any union miners from even entering it. This little-known story is a shocking and fascinating one on its own\, but the sentiments exploited and exposed in Bisbee in 1917 speak to America today. \nOn Dark and Bloody Ground:An Oral History of the West Virginia Mine Wars (West Virginia University Press\, 2021)\nAnne T. Lawrence\nThe Battle of Blair Mountain marked the culmination of the West Virginia mine wars\, a series of battles in the early 20th century pitting coal miners trying to join the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) against the mine operators who opposed them. Given the mines’ dangerous working conditions\, low pay\, and the abuse miners and their families were subjected to at company towns\, workers decided to organize. In order to thwart what they saw as a threat to their industry\, mine operators hired armed guards and often partnered with local law enforcement to keep the miners in check When the smoke cleared on the Battle of Blair Mountain\, an estimated 1 million rounds were fired\, dozens were killed\, and 985 miners were arrested. The uprising was suppressed\, but public awareness about the appalling conditions in which the miners were forced to live\, work\, and raise their families grew considerably. \n“The local doctor\, an army veteran\, said he heard about as much shooting that day as he had when American forces assaulted Manila in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. Lawrence retired in 2017 after a 30-year career on the faculty of the College of Business at San José State University.  She holds a doctorate in sociology from the University of California\, Berkeley.  Anne is currently the chair of a small nonprofit that provides fellowships to early-career writers. \n

SUMMARY:Political Economy of Labor Repression in the United States
DESCRIPTION:with author Andrew Kolin\nAndrew Kolin presents a detailed explanation of the essential elements that characterize capital’s relations to the working class and how capital relies on various forms of repressing reform and revolutionary movements by workers. The repression is directly linked to the class struggle between capital and labor. The starting point examines labor repression after the American Revolution. Andrew’s book then follows the role of the state along with the explosive growth of American capitalism to analyze the long history of capital and labor conflict with details of the US state being aligned with the interests of capital throughout American history. \nWholesale exclusion of labor from a fundamental role in framing policy in these institutions was crucial in understanding the unfolding of labor repression. Repression emerges amid a social struggle to acquire and maintain control over policy-making bodies\, which pits the few against the many. In response\, labor attempts to push back against institutional exclusion in part by the formation of labor unions. Capital reacts to such actions using repression to prevent labor from having a greater role in social institutions. For instance\, this is played out inside the workplace as capital and labor engage in a political struggle over the function of the workplace. Given capital’s monopoly of ownership\, capital employs various means to repress labor at work\, including the introduction of technology\, mass firings\, crushing strikes\, and the use of force to break up unions. \n \n  \nThe role of the state is not to be overlooked in its support of elite control over production\, as well as aiding through legal means the growth of a capitalist economy in opposition to labor’s conception of greater economic democracy.
