DESCRIPTION:A video of this May 17\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nAuthor Andy Merrifield presents Roses for Gramsci\, a remarkable personal journey through the life and writings of the great Sardinian Marxist\, Antonio Gramsci. \nIn the summer of 2023\, Merrifield and his family move from the UK to Rome to begin a new life. Soon after his arrival\, the author visits Gramsci’s grave and decides to take a volunteer position helping to maintain the cemetery. At the Non-Catholic Cemetery\, home also to the great Romantics\, Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Keats\, he keeps a watchful eye on Gramsci’s tombstone\, talking to some of his visitors\, admiring the roses and notes that Gramsci’s guests leave\, and communing with the sentinel cat that keeps watch near the gravesite. Thus begins Merrifield’s deep dive into Gramsci’s life almost a century after his death. \nThe result is a stunning portrait that offers fresh insights into nearly every aspect of Gramsci’s often tortured existence: a childhood scarred by severe health problems; his grasp of the culture of workers and peasants; his growing understanding of political economy; his friendship with the economist Piero Sraffa; his frustration trying to communicate with and be father to the son he never saw; his generosity and kindness. Above all\, Merrifield illuminates how Gramsci kept his humanity\, suffering horribly in prison while writing a revolutionary classic\, The Prison Notebooks. Personal\, compassionate\, moving—and illustrated with the author’s photographs —Merrifield revives both the legacy and meaning of Gramsci’s work and the dying art of belles lettres. Roses for Gramsci is an evocative and indelible book. \nAndy Merrifield is an independent scholar and author of a dozen books including\, most recently\, Beyond Plague Urbanism and Marx\, Dead and Alive: Reading “Capital” in Precarious Times. He has written numerous articles\, essays and reviews appearing in Monthly Review\, The Nation\, Harper’s Magazine\, New Left Review\, The Guardian\, Literary Hub\, Jacobin\, and Dissent. He is a prolific writer about urbanism\, political theory and literature.

From literary spats\, he moved to political involvement during Italy’s Years of Lead (ca. 1968-1988). Upon being charged with membership in a guerrilla group he fled to Paris and later to Germany. We Want Everything chronicles a rebellion centered at the Fiat Mirafiori factory in Turin; The Unseen continues the story of Italy’s explosive 1970s when the young and unemployed of cities joined workers in an unexpectedly militant movement known simply as Autonomy (Autonomia). SUMMARY:From Austerity to Fascism: The Capital Order

Mattei presents The Capital Order\, in which she explores the intellectual origins of austerity to uncover its originating motives: the protection of capital – and indeed capitalism – in times of social upheaval from below. Drawing on newly uncovered archival material from Britain and Italy\, she offers a damning account of the rise of austerity – and of modern economics – at the levers of contemporary political power. Mattei reveals how the threat of working-class power in the years after World War I animated policies that elevated owners\, smothered workers\, and imposed a rigid economic hierarchy across societies. Where austerity “succeeded\,” relatively speaking\, was in their enrichment of ruling-class interests who accumulated power and capital at the expense of labor. Here is where the true value of austerity can be observed: its insulation of entrenched privilege and its elimination of all alternatives to capitalism. \nClara E. Mattei is assistant professor of economics at the New School for Social Research in New York City. She was a 2018-2019 member of the School of Social Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Studies.

DESCRIPTION:The MEP Literature Group resumes this fall/winter and continues its tradition of reading international political fiction. We will read several works by the Italian author Nanni Balestrini\, including We Want Everything and The Unseen. These selections are in honor of Michael Lardner\, an enthusiast of Balestrini’s writing and the convener of the MEP’s literature group for many years. Balestrini\, born in 1935\, had by the early 1960s an active literary career in Gruppo 63\, edited journals\, and participated in computer experiments. SUMMARY:The European Radical Left: Movements and Parties Since the 1960s
DESCRIPTION:with author Giorgos Charalambous\nIs today’s left really new? How has the European radical left evolved?\nGiorgos Charalambous answers these questions by looking at three moments of rapid political change – the late 1960s to late 1970s; the turn of the millennium; and post-2008. He challenges the conventional understanding of a ‘new left’\, drawing out continuities with earlier movements and parties. Charalambous examines the ‘Long ’68’\, symbolized by the May uprisings in France\, which saw the rise of new left forces and the widespread criticism by younger radical activists of traditional communist and socialist parties. He puts this side by side with the turn of the millennium when the Global Justice Movement rose to prominence and changed the face of the international left\, and also the period after the financial crash of 2008 and the rise of anti-austerity politics which initiated the most recent wave of new left parties such as Podemos in Spain and Syriza in Greece. \nWith a unique ‘two-level’ perspective\, Charalambous approaches the left through both social movements and party politics\, looking at identities\, rhetoric and organization\, and bringing a fresh new approach to radical history\, as well as assessing challenges for both activists and scholars. \nThis book is available to download through the Open Access program. \nGiorgos Charalambous is Assistant Professor of Political Science at the Department of Politics and Governance\, University of Nicosia. He is also the co-convenor of the Left Radicalism Specialist Group at the Political Studies Association. Charalambous is the author of European Integration and the Communist Dilemma (Ashgate\, 2013)\, and has co-edited Party-Society Relations in Cyprus (Routledge\, 2016) and Left Radicalism and Populism in Europe (Routledge\, 2019).

Often taken to be a theory of the party as a “modern prince” derived from Machiavelli\, can this still be so in an epoch when political parties are everywhere in decline? DESCRIPTION:How the Populist Right Conquered Italy\n“David Broder has produced an excellent account of what has made modern Italy different but also similar to other Western European states. It begins back in the early 1990s when Italy was once more a pioneer\, in that it was the first Western democracy where an established and stable two-party system collapsed suddenly\, opening the way for a series of new political forces\, labelled populist\, to emerge spectacularly and suddenly.”    — Chris Bambery\, Counterfire \n Many commentators blame Italy’s malaise on cultural ills—pointing to the corruption of public life or a supposedly endemic backwardness. In this reading\, Italy has failed to converge with the neoliberal reforms mounted by other European countries\, leaving it to trail behind the rest of the world. \nFirst They Took Rome offers a different perspective: Italy isn’t failing to keep up with its international peers but farther along the same path of decline they are following.
