DESCRIPTION:An eight-week study of Andrew Hartman’s recently published Karl Marx in America.  To read Karl Marx is to contemplate a world created by capitalism. People have long viewed the United States as the quintessential anti-Marxist nation\, but Marx’s ideas have inspired a wide range of people to formulate a more precise sense of the stakes of the American project. Historians have highlighted the imprint made on the United States by Enlightenment thinkers such as Adam Smith\, John Locke\, and Thomas Paine. Marx is rarely considered alongside these figures\, yet his ideas are the most relevant today because of capitalism’s centrality to American life. Karl Marx in America argues that even though Marx never visited America\, the country has been infused\, shaped\, and transformed by him. \nFacilitated by David Worley\, a member of the executive committee of the Marxist Education Project and a longtime associate of the Brecht Forum\, where he served a term as co-chair of the Board of Directors. David is a nonsectarian socialist\, active since the 1960s in support of a wide range of peace and social justice causes.

DESCRIPTION:A recording of this February 15\, 2025\, event is available on our YouTube channel. \nPoliticians are blaming the destruction and loss of life in the Los Angeles wildfires on each other\, but the truth is the fires are the result of not even years or decades but centuries of neglect. Dennis Broe examines this history and sheds light on the ingrained power\, the structural class and racial imbalances\, and the wanton devastation of a city organized not for its people but for its elites. Using Mike Davis’s classic Ecology of Fear as a blueprint\, Broe will put the still smoldering fires in context by looking at five areas: the geological long durée of a land of fires\, earthquakes\, tornados and mudslides; the ecological relationship of the fires to ever more intense global warming; the neoliberal moment of the deterioration of the state in its domestic and global dimensions; the region’s sedimented class and racial inequalities (exemplified by the recently devastated African-American community of Altadena); and the altered character of Los Angeles–and especially “Hollywood”–as no longer simply a site of imagined disasters but one that is now all too real. \nDennis Broe\, a journalist\, critic and scholar who has taught at the Sorbonne and spoken at many MEP events\, is the author of many books on film noir\, media\, and television\, including five novels set in Los Angeles in the 1940s and 50s\, the latest of which is The Dark Ages\, about the coming of McCarthyism to Hollywood.

SUMMARY:New York City and the Experience of Modernity\, Fall session
DESCRIPTION:An eight week series featuring visual and oral presentations along with discussions each week. Please note that this will be on Tuesdays\, not Fridays. TWO MORE WEEKS \nConvened by Thomas Wensing\nIn the year 1877\, the signals were given for the rest of the century; the black would be put back; the strikes of white workers would not be tolerated; the industrial and political elites of North and South would take hold of the country and organize the greatest march of economic growth in human history. They would do it with the aid of\, and at the expense of\, black labor\, white labor\, Chinese labor\, European immigrant labor\, female labor\, rewarding them differently by race\, sex\, national origin\, and social class\, in such a way as to create separate levels of oppression – a skillful terracing to stabilize the pyramid of wealth”[1] \nThis is a seminar about New York City and its people. It is not a study of architectural styles and objects\, – although the physical stuff of cities does play a role -\, but it is a course about the experience of the way in which modernity builds and destroys cities. In the previous course we saw how the idea of modernity originated in eighteenth-century Western Europe during the Age of Enlightenment. In this course we explore how modernity is not only an expression of the constellation of forces that builds modern societies\, but from the onset has been an exclusionary project along racial\, gender and class lines. \nEurope produced\, in the words of Stuart Hall\, a cultural identity which portrayed Europe as a distinct\, unique and triumphant civilization[2]. The construction of otherness within the dominant European culture itself\, and in relation to the exploration and conquest of the Americas\, formed the pretext for native displacement and genocide\, environmental exploitation and extractivism\, oppression and slavery. These discourses of “self” and “otherness” are\, of course\, inextricably interwoven with the history of New York City\, and have always been contested. \nThis semester turns to the late 19th and 20th century and focuses on the way in which the building of New York City took place in an arena of contesting political\, cultural and economic forces; that of the dominant\, patriarchal\, Anglo-Saxon\, male\, capitalist culture on one side\, and that of the excluded social groups on the other. We will look at various groups\, whether it be socialist\, communist\, feminist\, black\, or queer\, which questioned the ‘centeredness’ of the West\, – and the structures of oppression it built -\, and which thus argued for the project of Reason and liberal democracy to be expanded and fulfil its promise. \nWriters and novelists have been able to direct the gaze at these groups which have been excluded from the path of progress\, – as it was defined and constricted by society – to express diverging meanings to life in the metropolis. Theirs were often minority views\, but in expressing them\, they were able to carve out space for the ‘other’\, and they have expanded the conversation and imagination in indelible ways. A question which looms large in this seminar is the relationship between individual agency and collective action. The seminar encourages the expression of personal\, familial\, local\, and ethnic explorations and to tie these to larger societal trends. [3] The participants will be presented with multiple views of the same topic; one drawn from the professional literature\, – either historical\, architectural\, sociological\, or drawn from literary studies -\, and one from fiction or biography. SUMMARY:Catastrophe and Systemic Change: Learning from the Grenfell Tower Fire and Other Disasters
DESCRIPTION:a presentation by Gill Kernick\nintroduced by Thomas Wensing\nThe GRENFELL TOWER TRAGEDY was the worst residential fire in London since World War II. It killed 72 people in the richest borough of one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Like other catastrophic events before it and since\, it has the power to bring aboutlasting change. But will it? The historical evidence is weighed against ‘lessons being learnt’ in a meaningful or enduring way. In an attempt to understand why\, despite enormous efforts\, we persistently fail to learn from catastrophic events\, the book Catastrophe and Systemic Change uses the details of the Grenfell fire as a case study to consider why we don’t learn and what it takes to enable real systemic change. The book explores the myths\, key challenges and the conditions that inhibit learning\, and it identifies opportunities to positively disrupt the status quo. \nAuthor Gill Kernick will present her powerful analysis of the Grenfell disaster and its aftermath. The recent fire of a tower block is a sharp reminder that there are many residential structures both in the UK and mainland Europe that feature similar hazardous cladding systems which urgently need to be replaced. \nGill Kernick will be introduced by Thomas Wensing who will present a short introduction on the history of social housing in the United Kingdom to familiarize the audience with an idea of the policy context which engendered the conditions in which the Grenfelldisaster took place. \nGILL KERNICK is an internationally experienced strategic consultant specializing in safety\, culture and leadership. DESCRIPTION:Governing Surplus and Survival in Global Capitalism\nwith author Susanne Soederberg\n \nIn the 1870s\, Friedrich Engels published a series of articles on “The Housing Question\,” wherein he argued that decent\, secure housing for the working class is incompatible with the commodity nature of urban property and human labor power in the capitalist system\, as the movements of capital inevitably will undermine all piecemeal reforms. Soederberg pushes beyond dominant debates by treating low-rent housing as a unique commodity that provides a necessary place for the societal reproduction of labor power while being integrated into the global dynamics of capitalism. She argues that historical and geographical configurations of monetized governance\, including landlords\, employers and inter-scalar state practices\, have served to reproduce urban displacements and obfuscate their gendered\, class and racialized underpinnings. Rising phoenix-like from the ashes of the old trade union movement\, workers’ struggle is being reborn from below by workers themselves. \nBy engaging in what Karl Marx called a workers’ inquiry\, workers and militant co-researchers are studying their working conditions\, the technical composition of capital\, and how to recompose their own power in order to devise new tactics\, strategies\, organizational forms and objectives. These workers’ inquiries\, from call center workers to platform\, trucking\, cleaning\, logistics\, mining\, auto factories\, teachers\, and adjunct professors\, are re-energizing unions\, bypassing unions altogether or innovating new forms of workers’ organizations. \nIn one of the first major studies to critically assess this new cycle of global working class struggle\, Robert Ovetz collects together case studies from over a dozen contributors\, looking at workers’ movements in China\, Mexico\, the US\, South Africa\, Turkey\, Argentina\, Italy\, India and the UK. The book reveals how these new forms of struggle are no longer limited to single sectors of the economy or contained by state borders\, but are circulating internationally and disrupting the global capitalist system as they do. \nROBERT OVETZ is a Lecturer in Political Science at San Jose State University in California. In architecture history modernity is usually narrated as an interplay between the combined forces of the Industrial Revolution and capital\, with social upheaval\, explosive population growth and immigration as its result. The invention of new materials and new technologies stimulated new forms\, structures\, typologies\, and — in the most optimistic accounts — new forms of living. Writers and novelists have been able to direct the gaze at groups which have been excluded from the path of progress\, – as it was defined and constricted by society – to express diverging meanings to life in the metropolis. A question which looms large in this seminar is the relationship between individual agency and collective action. SUMMARY:Start Early\, Stay Late: Planning for Care in Old Age
DESCRIPTION:Socialist Register 2021 authors Pat and Hugh Armstrong\nCovid-19 has exposed too many weaknesses in the neoliberal capitalist system to count\, especially when it comes to the most vulnerable. For 10 years our international\, interdisciplinary research team has been documenting the profound weaknesses in nursing home care within Canada\, Germany\, Norway\, Sweden\, the UK\, and the US. Many of the current deficits in resident care originate in various forms of privatization central to neoliberalism. Especially in Canada\, the UK\, and the US\, nursing homes that are heavily funded by the public purse have been handed over to corporations\, providing them with guaranteed pay and often guaranteed full houses. \nThe lines between for-profit and not have become increasingly blurred by various neoliberal strategies. One of these involves non-profit and state-owned homes contracting out services to for-profit firms as – in denial of the literature on the determinants of health – services such as food\, housekeeping\, and laundry have been defined out of care and dismissed as ancillary. This contracting out has not only undermined teamwork\, but has also resulted in poor food\, inadequate cleaning\, and limited laundry – all of which threaten health. At the same time\, fewer and fewer spaces are available in these homes with government funding. The result is twofold. All those who manage to get into these homes have high care needs\, and those who cannot are either forced into the for-profit sector or rely more on unpaid care\, most of which is provided by women. For too many\, neither of these is an option. Another strategy blurring the lines is the promotion of for-profit managerial strategies within the non-profit and public nursing homes that remain. This means the lowest possible staffing levels\, the shifting of as much work as possible to those with the least formal training\, limiting workers’ autonomy\, pay\, hours\, and benefits\, and relying on a labor force already made vulnerable by gender\, racialization\, and immigration status. \nBarely enough services pre-pandemic have proven to be not nearly enough during the pandemic – which has exposed the disastrous life-altering or lethal consequences of all these developments for those elderly requiring care. \nPat Armstrong is Distinguished Research Professor of Sociology at York University.
