SUMMARY:Slavery and Capitalism: A Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a nine-session reading group on David McNally’s recently published Slavery and Capitalism: A New Marxist History. McNally’s book presents a systematic Marxist account of the capitalist character of Atlantic slavery to support the provocative claim that enslaved labor in the plantation system is a form of capitalist commodity production. Weaving together history\, political economy\, and radical abolitionism\, McNally demonstrates that plantation slaves formed a modern working class and highlights the self-activity of enslaved people fighting for their freedom. He reframes their resistance as labor struggles over production and reproduction\, with significant implications for US and Atlantic history and for understanding the roots of racial capitalism. \nFacilitated by Fred Murphy. Over the past decade\, Fred has led numerous MEP study groups on political economy\, ecosocialism\, science and technology\, and Latin American politics. DESCRIPTION:(ends on December 13) \nThis eight-session course with Alex Steinberg concludes our ongoing studies of Hegel’s mysterious work\, The Phenomenology of Spirit. We will do a close reading of the Preface to the Phenomenology of Spirit\, a work that can be read on its own and is considered the most succinct and comprehensive statement of Hegel’s philosophy. \nThese sessions introduce what is living in Hegel for those who want to change the world. No prior experience with Hegel or attendance at previous classes is expected or required. Our goal is to make Hegel’s dialectic less mysterious as we go along and try to tease out the revolutionary implications in his thought and its significance for our time. \nThere are 3 acceptable translations of the Phenomenology of Spirit available:\nOne by A.V. Miller published by Oxford University Press\, another by Terry Pinkard from Cambridge University Press\, and another translation that includes only the Preface\, by Yirmiyahu Yovel from Princeton University Press with a detailed commentary. \nAlex Steinberg is an independent scholar. He has taught on topics such as the Philosophy of Heidegger and Nazism\, Marxism and Humanism\, and Hegel’s Philosophy of History at various alternative educational institutions and informally. He was a Conference Presenter at the First International Conference on Trotsky in Havana\, Cuba. Alex has been also involved with the governance of WBAI radio in New York and its parent organization\, Pacifica\, most recently as the Chair of the Pacifica National Board from 2019-2021.

SUMMARY:Reading Marx's Capital\, Volume III
DESCRIPTION:Volume III of Capital – The Process of Capitalist Production as a Whole – integrates and completes Marx’s analysis\, enabling us to understand and make sense of how the phenomena we see occurring on the surface of society are related to the underlying system of capitalism. It is essential to understanding the current moment of late capitalist/imperialist development\, in which we see the rise of rentier and finance capital and the commodification of debt; continuously rising prices that bring still more poverty and starvation; new technologies turned into means of extracting rents; the privatization of public spaces\, properties and institutions; and the list goes on. \nParticipants in this long-running study group have been closely reading and discussing Volume III\, using a hybrid approach to cover the entire book. For key chapters or sections\, we do a line-by-line reading with pauses for questions and commentary. Participants read other sections on their own\, along with occasional supplemental materials such as passages from Beverley Best’s highly praised companion to Volume III\, The Automatic Fetish. SUMMARY:Hubert Harrison: Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism
DESCRIPTION:A video of this November 8\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nBrian Kwoba‘s recently published Hubert Harrison: Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism introduces the working-class journalist\, activist\, and educator Hubert Henry Harrison (1883-1927)\, who generated an array of visionary solutions to the systemic injustices of his day. After blazing a trail for Black workers and organizers in the Socialist Party of America and the Paterson Silk Strike of 1913\, Harrison emerged as the most prominent Black freethinker and free lover of his generation. He also practiced armed self-defense and called for an anti-capitalist\, anti-imperialist “Colored International” alliance in the face of European colonization in Africa\, Asia\, and Latin America. Most spectacularly\, Harrison’s Liberty League of Negro Americans catalyzed the rise of Marcus Garvey and the largest international organization of African people in modern history. Because of his fearless radicalism\, however\, the full scope of Harrison’s revolutionary legacy has been largely erased from popular memory … until now. \nDr. Brian Kwoba was born in Manchester\, Connecticut\, and raised in Boulder\, Colorado. After earning his undergraduate degree in philosophy at Cornell University\, he spent six years teaching high school and middle school history and social studies in Boston before heading to the University of Oxford for his doctoral degree in history. Dr. Kwoba is currently an associate professor of history and also the director of African and African American Studies at the University of Memphis. Over the past two decades\, Dr. Kwoba has been an activist on issues including anti-imperialism\, immigrant workers rights\, climate justice\, Falastin\, decolonizing education\, pan-Africanism\, and the movement for Black lives. People have long viewed the United States as the quintessential anti-Marxist nation\, but Marx’s ideas have inspired a wide range of people to formulate a more precise sense of the stakes of the American project. Historians have highlighted the imprint made on the United States by Enlightenment thinkers such as Adam Smith\, John Locke\, and Thomas Paine. Marx is rarely considered alongside these figures\, yet his ideas are the most relevant today because of capitalism’s centrality to American life. Karl Marx in America argues that even though Marx never visited America\, the country has been infused\, shaped\, and transformed by him. \nAndrew Hartman is professor of history at Illinois State University. He is the author of Karl Marx in America (2025) and A War for the Soul of America: A History of the Culture Wars (2015)\, both published by the University of Chicago Press\, and Education and the Cold War: The Battle for the American School (2008). Michael Lazarus is the author of Absolute Ethical Life: Aristotle\, Hegel and Marx\, and Jensen Suther is the author of True Materialism: Hegelian Marxism and the Modernist Struggle for Freedom.  Lazarus situates Marx within a shared tradition of ethical inquiry\, placing him in close dialogue with Aristotle and Hegel. His book traces the ethical and political dimensions of Marx’s work missed by Hannah Arendt and Alasdair MacIntyre\, two of the most profound critics of modern politics and ethics. Ultimately\, the book claims that Marx’s value-form theory is both a continuation of Aristotelian and Hegelian themes and at the same time his most distinctive theoretical achievement. In True Materialism\, Suther engages with three titans of literary modernism—Franz Kafka\, Thomas Mann\, and Samuel Beckett—to pursue not only an account of Hegel’s materialism but also a new critique of capitalist modernity. Breaking with the received view of Marx’s relation to German Idealism\, the book argues that the materialist critique of capitalist production is inseparable from Hegel’s idea that the demand for freedom is a demand for mutual recognition. \nMichael Lazarus is a postdoctoral research fellow at Deakin University. \nJensen Suther received his PhD from Yale University and is currently a Junior Fellow in the Harvard Society of Fellows.

SUMMARY:Trotsky in New York Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Socialists and Immigrants in the Lower East Side\nJoin Alex Steinberg and Daniel Lazare for a historical walking tour of Lower Manhattan as we explore some of the places where Leon Trotsky visited and worked during his nine week stay in New York in early 1917. \nWe will explore the culture of the radicalized immigrant communities of Yiddish-speaking Jews from Eastern Europe as well as German\, Russian\, Italian and Greek immigrants. These communities supported a thriving socialist movement in New York.  And in 1917\, ferment and struggle increased dramatically as America entered World War I on April 6\, 1917 and Russia’s revolutionary wave exploded a few months later. \nAfter beginning at Cooper Union\, we will walk to 77 St. Marks Place\, which housed the offices of the Russian language newspaper Novy Mir and where Trotsky and other future Bolshevik leaders worked daily. From there\, the tour will walk to the building of the Jewish Daily Forward in Seward Park\, where we will learn of Trotsky’s dramatic confrontation with more conservative socialists. As we walk we will pass by a number of places that were important in understanding the history of the social struggles of immigrants in a New York very different than the city we know today. \nLed by Alex Steinberg and Daniel Lazare. Alex is a frequent teacher of Marxist Education Project classes on the philosophy of Hegel and related topics. DESCRIPTION:Film Noir\, Greed\, and Corporate Graft in LaLa Land\nA five-session reading group with novelist and scholar Dennis Broe\, presented by the Institute for the Radical Imagination and co-sponsored by the MEP\, LA Progressive and People’s World\nOrson Welles once called Los Angeles “a bright\, guilty place\,” and that is as true today as it was in the 1940s when Welles coined this description. Dennis Broe leads a group reading of his five Los Angeles novels* set in the film-noir period of the late 1940s and early 1950s. The contradictions we will unearth in that postwar period\, the period of crime films that visually documented this seedy reality\, have never been resolved\, only continually papered over\, and so they resound today. We will look at five industries and moments in this period with a view toward explaining how the postwar period set the tone for what was to follow\, leading to the present era of a vast income disparity and frequent “natural\,” though totally avoidable\, disasters. \n*The novels – Left of Eden\, A Hello to Arms\, The Precinct with the Golden Arm\, The House That Buff Built\, and The Dark Ages – are detailed in this syllabus. DESCRIPTION:A video of this May 17\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nAuthor Andy Merrifield presents Roses for Gramsci\, a remarkable personal journey through the life and writings of the great Sardinian Marxist\, Antonio Gramsci. \nIn the summer of 2023\, Merrifield and his family move from the UK to Rome to begin a new life. Soon after his arrival\, the author visits Gramsci’s grave and decides to take a volunteer position helping to maintain the cemetery. At the Non-Catholic Cemetery\, home also to the great Romantics\, Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Keats\, he keeps a watchful eye on Gramsci’s tombstone\, talking to some of his visitors\, admiring the roses and notes that Gramsci’s guests leave\, and communing with the sentinel cat that keeps watch near the gravesite. Thus begins Merrifield’s deep dive into Gramsci’s life almost a century after his death. \nThe result is a stunning portrait that offers fresh insights into nearly every aspect of Gramsci’s often tortured existence: a childhood scarred by severe health problems; his grasp of the culture of workers and peasants; his growing understanding of political economy; his friendship with the economist Piero Sraffa; his frustration trying to communicate with and be father to the son he never saw; his generosity and kindness. SUMMARY:60 Years Since the April Revolution in Santo Domingo
DESCRIPTION:Sixty years ago\, on April 24\, 1965\, tens of thousands of ordinary people in Santo Domingo (also known as the Dominican Republic) joined a popular revolt which sought to restore President Juan Bosch to power after he was overthrown in a US-backed\, right-wing military coup in September\, 1963. Posing a threat to both local elites and Washington’s geopolitical expansion in the Caribbean\, the April Revolution\, and the subsequent anti-imperialist resistance that sprang up against US military occupation\, contributed to the development of anti-imperialist politics in Santo Domingo and beyond. \nJoin us on May 3 for a panel to commemorate the 6oth anniversary of the April Revolution and discuss its political implications\, the role of working-class Afro-Dominicans\, women\, LGBTQ people\, Haitian internationalist fighters\, socialists\, writers and artists\, as well as the worldwide international solidarity movement that ensued in the face of imperialist onslaught. \nGénesis Lara is a scholar of Caribbean and Afro-Latinx Studies. Raised in both the Bronx and Miami\, her research focuses on gender\, Blackness\, social movements\, human rights\, and diaspora world making. She explores the ways Afro-Caribbean women mobilized grief and mourning as ways to contest state violence in the twentieth century. Her work poses larger questions of ways Black people have conceived and fought for human rights. Génesis Lara completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Florida and her PhD at the University of California\, Davis. \nGina Goico is a multidisciplinary artist\, scholar\, and self-proclaimed necia. Goico navigates their identity and the spaces where they exist in the Dominican Republic and the United States through their work\, which ranges from embroidery to installations\, ink drawings\, and performances. Goico’s research focuses on how the aesthetics\, performances\, and organizing of self-identifying black Dominican artists and organizers operate as strategies that queer state-circulated identity in the Dominican Republic and its New York City diaspora. Goico was a Van Lier Fellow and artist in residence with Smack Mellon. They also participated in the AIM fellowship at The Bronx Museum of the Arts and were artist-in-residence at The Laundromat Project Kelly Street. Goico holds an AAS in Fine Arts and Illustration from Altos de Chavón and a BFA in Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design. They also have an MA in Arts Politics from NYU and are PhD candidate in Performing and Media Arts at Cornell University. \nAmaury Rodriguez has been involved in Haitian-Dominican solidarity activism for more than two decades. His writing has appeared in NACLA\, El Salto\, Esendom and Jacobin. He is co-editor\, with Raj Chetty\, of a special issue of The Black Scholar journal dedicated to Dominican Black Studies. \nMatías Bosch Carcuro studied Environmental Sciences and Arts at the Central University of Chile. He has a MA in Social Sciences with a minor in Politics and a MA in Public Management and Policy from the University of Chile. He is also a University professor and researcher on political economy\, labor\, development models\, social rights\, social protection and security systems\, as well as state policies targeting discriminated and overexploited working people.

DESCRIPTION:A video of this March 26\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nAs some of the most powerful capitalists in history are openly disavowing political democracy and calling for the unbridled rule of private wealth\, now is a good time to revisit Karl Marx’s revolutionary republicanism and his ideas about political power and social classes. In his recently published Citizen Marx: Republicanism and the Formation of Karl Marx’s Social and Political Thought\, Bruno Leipold argues that Karl Marx’s thinking was deeply informed by republicanism. Challenging common depictions of Marx that downplay or ignore his commitment to politics\, democracy\, and freedom\, Leipold shows that Marx viewed democratic political institutions as crucial to overcoming the social unfreedom and domination of capitalism.  \nPlacing Marx’s republican communism in its historical context—but not consigning him to that context—Leipold traces Marx’s shifting relationship to republicanism across three broad periods. First\, Marx began his political life as a republican committed to a democratic republic in which citizens held active popular sovereignty. Second\, he transitioned to communism\, criticizing republicanism but incorporating the republican opposition to arbitrary power into his social critiques. He argued that although a democratic republic was not sufficient for emancipation\, it was necessary for it. Third\, spurred by the events of the Paris Commune of 1871\, he came to view popular control in representation and public administration as essential to the realization of communism. Leipold shows how Marx positioned his republican communism to displace both antipolitical socialism and anticommunist republicanism. One of Marx’s great contributions\, Leipold suggests\, was to place politics (and especially democratic politics) at the heart of socialism. \nBruno Leipold is a fellow in political theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science.\nHe is the coeditor of Radical Republicanism: Recovering the Tradition’s Popular Heritage.

Dennis Broe examines this history and sheds light on the ingrained power\, the structural class and racial imbalances\, and the wanton devastation of a city organized not for its people but for its elites. Using Mike Davis’s classic Ecology of Fear as a blueprint\, Broe will put the still smoldering fires in context by looking at five areas: the geological long durée of a land of fires\, earthquakes\, tornados and mudslides; the ecological relationship of the fires to ever more intense global warming; the neoliberal moment of the deterioration of the state in its domestic and global dimensions; the region’s sedimented class and racial inequalities (exemplified by the recently devastated African-American community of Altadena); and the altered character of Los Angeles–and especially “Hollywood”–as no longer simply a site of imagined disasters but one that is now all too real. \nDennis Broe\, a journalist\, critic and scholar who has taught at the Sorbonne and spoken at many MEP events\, is the author of many books on film noir\, media\, and television\, including five novels set in Los Angeles in the 1940s and 50s\, the latest of which is The Dark Ages\, about the coming of McCarthyism to Hollywood.

DESCRIPTION:Weekly sessions on Tuesdays at 1 pm through December 2024 \nIs Artificial Intelligence (AI\, sic) really the dire threat to the future of humanity as even some of its proponents claim\, or is it a more mundane and familiar threat to working people who face loss of their livelihoods and/or further speed-up and alienation? The entire history of industrial capitalism is punctuated by recurring waves of automation to reduce labor costs and turnover time\, each time provoking strong resistance by the affected workforce. This reading group will probe the history both of AI and computer technology specifically and of working-class resistance to capitalist automation in general. In eight weekly sessions we will read\, discuss\, and critique two recent works: Breaking Things at Work: The Luddites Are Right About Why You Hate Your Job\, by Gavin Mueller; and The Eye of the Master: A Social History of Artificial Intelligence\, by Matteo Pasquinelli. DESCRIPTION:A recording of this October 13\, 2024\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nGiampaolo Conte presents A History of Capitalist Transformation: A Critique of Liberal-Capitalist Reforms\, just published by Routledge. Since the recent financial crises\, the expression “liberal reform” has come to evoke austerity and economic malaise\, especially for the working classes and a segment of the middle class. Conte’s historical research demonstrates that the chief purpose of such reforms has been to integrate semi-peripheral states into the capitalist world-economy. DESCRIPTION:A recording of this May 18\, 2024\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nWe marked the tenth anniversary of the Marxist Education Project with this keynote talk by David McNally on Marx and colonialism. The concluding chapter of Capital volume 1 tackles “the modern theory of colonization\,” yet Marx only half-delivers on the promise implied. Rather than present a full-fledged account of capitalist colonialism\, he pivots back to Europe and the processes of primitive accumulation. McNally fills in crucial gaps in Marx’s text\, suggesting directions in which he might have gone in analyzing colonial relations and the globalization of capitalism outside of Europe – centering bondage\, slavery\, colonialism\, and racism as foundational elements of global capitalism. \nDavid McNally is a good friend of the Marxist Education Project. Our most successful reading groups in the past 10 years featured his book Blood and Money: War\, Slavery\, Finance and Empire\, and we have also studied his Global Slump: The Economics and Politics of Crisis and Resistance. David is the Cullen Distinguished Professor of History and Business at the University of Houston (UH) and Director of the Center for the Study of Capitalism. Earlier he taught political economy at York University Toronto for over thirty years. David is the editor-in-chief of Spectre\, a biannual and online journal of Marxist theory\, strategy\, and analysis.

SUMMARY:Trotsky in New York Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Socialists and Immigrants in the Lower East Side\nJoin Alex Steinberg for a historical walking tour of Lower Manhattan as we explore some of the places where Leon Trotsky visited and worked during his nine week stay in New York in early 1917. \nWe will explore the culture of the radicalized immigrant communities of Yiddish-speaking Jews from Eastern Europe as well as German\, Russian\, Italian and Greek immigrants. These communities supported a thriving socialist movement in New York.  And in 1917\, ferment and struggle increased dramatically as America entered World War I on April 6\, 1917 and Russia’s revolutionary wave exploded a few months later. \nAfter beginning at Cooper Union\, we will walk to 77 St. Marks Place\, which housed the offices of the Russian language newspaper Novy Mir and where Trotsky and other future Bolshevik leaders worked daily. From there\, the tour will walk to the building of the Jewish Daily Forward in Seward Park\, where we will learn of Trotsky’s dramatic confrontation with more conservative socialists. As we walk we will pass by a number of places that were important in understanding the history of the social struggles of immigrants in a New York very different than the city we know today. \nLed by Alex Steinberg who has taught a number of classes with the Marxist Education Project. \nMeet in front the main entrance of The Great Hall of Cooper Union\, behind the statue of Peter Cooper\, East 7th Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues. \n

DESCRIPTION:A video of this February 24\, 2024\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \n“All history is the history of cat struggle.” In Marx for Cats: A Radical Bestiary\, our guest speaker Leigh Claire La Berge follows feline footprints through Western economic history to reveal an animality at the heart of Marxism. She draws on a twelve-hundred-year arc spanning capitalism’s feudal prehistory\, its colonialist and imperialist ages\, the bourgeois revolutions that supported capitalism\, and the communist revolutions that opposed it. Attending to myriad archival appearance of lions\, tigers\, wildcats\, and other felines\, La Berge argues that these creatures have been central to Marxist understandings of the economy and politics. Asking what humans and animals owe each other in a moment of ecological crisis\, La Berge joins current debates about ecosocialism. DESCRIPTION:Weekly reading group in progress\, ending 2/8/24.   \nSeptember 2023 marked fifty years since the overthrow of Salvador Allende’s socialist government on September 11\, 1973. To honor the struggles and sufferings of the Chilean people\, the MEP’s Literature Group dedicates this reading group to Chilean writers active before\, during\, and since the Pinochet dictatorship. In addition to the justly well-known writings of Roberto Bolaño\, many of our readings will be from translations by Megan McDowell. McDowell has worked with US and British independent publishers to promote a diverse group of writers largely unfamiliar to American audiences. SUMMARY:Blood and Fire: The Violent Origins of Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:Join the MEP’s Capital Study Group in a four-week study of the concluding section of volume I of Marx’s Capital\, which discloses the widespread violence and dispossession – in both Europe and colonized areas – that accompanied the emergence of capitalism. For Marx\, the history of this original expropriation or “primitive accumulation” was “written in letters of blood and fire.” In order for social relations to become structured around the production of commodities\, direct producers had to be violently separated from their means of subsistence\, and common resources had to be concentrated and privatized. \nThis series both concludes our year-long close reading of Capital\, Volume I\, and introduces the work for new readers who are welcome and encouraged to attend. It is also a good opportunity for those who had to drop out along the way to return to the study of Capital. Each week\, we recap the passages covered at the previous session\, introduce new material\, and open up a discussion. We read the more challenging sections together a paragraph or two at a time. Supplementary materials and/or questions for reflection are circulated prior to each week’s session\, and the conversation continues in the group’s Slack channel. \nIllustration depicts the clearing (enclosure) of the Scottish Highlands\, which Marx details in chapter 27 of Capital.

Peasants and artisans mounted strong resistance over centuries but in the end a propertyless proletariat emerged in countryside and city in England and other countries where capitalism triumphed. Such struggles continue down to the present\, however\, as working people continue to challenge new forms of expropriation such as intellectual-property laws\, private patents on seeds and other life forms\, displacement of urban communities\, extortion through petty fines and regressive taxation\, and seizures of land and water for mining and other profitable purposes. This reading group will explore the historical roots and persistence of such crimes and resistance by reading together The War Against the Commons\, by Ian Angus; Stop\, Thief! by Peter Linebaugh; and related texts. \nFacilitated by Fred Murphy and Steve Knight of the MEP’s Ecosocialist Study Group.
