DESCRIPTION:Translator Marilyn Vogt-Downey presents a poignant memoir by Mikhail Baitalsky\, a Ukrainian survivor of the 1930s purges in Soviet Union. Notebooks for the Grandchildren: Recollections of a Supporter of the Marxist Opposition to Stalin Who Survived the Stalin Terror is an indispensable resource for anyone seeking to understand what went wrong after the great Russian Revolution of 1917. Through the eyes of young Ukrainians like himself\, who came of age fighting for the Revolution but were murdered in the late 1930s\, Baitalsky recounts the Revolution’s hopes—and its tragic unraveling under Stalin. He narrates how Stalin rose to power and carried out the “political counterrevolution” that silenced so many. Arrested three times by the Stalin regime\, Baitalsky survived to tell this story. \nMarilyn Vogt-Downey translated for the Writings of Leon Trotsky series (1970s) for Pathfinder Press and Samizdat: Voices of the Soviet Opposition (1974) and was a contributor to the Bulletin in Defense of Marxism (1990s) as well as to Truthout and Counterpunch. She taught high school economics and foreign policy in NYC for 26 years and is currently a delegate to the United Federation of Teachers Retiree Chapter.

DESCRIPTION:Join Russell Dale to read and discuss the works of Adam Smith in this ongoing study group. At present the group is reading Book 4 of Smith’s The Wealth of Nations. Smith’s notion of capital was important to Marx in the development of Marx’s understanding of capital\, and Marx frequently quoted from Smith in his discussions in Capital and other writings.\n \nWe are reading the Oxford University Press edition of the work – the full title is An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1976; General editors: R. H. Campbell and A. S. Skinner; textual editor: W. B. Todd). The book has been republished by The Liberty Fund and made widely available in a two-volume photographic reproduction edition. \nRussell Dale taught philosophy at Lehman College\, CUNY\, for many years but is now retired. He has been a collaborator of the Marxist Education Project since its inception. He is on the Editorial Board of the Marxist journal Science & Society.

SUMMARY:The Aesthetics of Resistance: Art and Fascism in the 1930s
DESCRIPTION:Join ongoing weekly sessions of the MEP Literature Group as we read together The Aesthetics of Resistance\, the masterwork of German author Peter Weiss. This trilogy of historical novels opens in 1937 and details the interactions of the narrator and his peers and family with historical figures of the European left engaged in the fight against fascism. As the characters encounter each other clandestinely to discuss political questions\, they also discuss works of art and question how the art of the past can support their resistance to a horrific present: what can art suggest for a future they may not live to see? \nJust as Weiss’s characters rely upon group discussion\, readers of this trilogy have often formed reading groups to aid their understanding of the novelist’s ambitions. The MEP is joining this leftist tradition. We will read these challenging novels slowly and discuss themes such as strategy and tactics in the fight against fascism\, and the works of art that inspired the characters’ discussions. DESCRIPTION:A video of this June 27\, 2026\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nA panel celebrating the 2026 edition of Socialist Register \nThe newly published 2026 volume of Socialist Register – entitled “Late-Stage Capitalism? Accumulation in the Ruins” – interrogates anew the notion that global capitalism is in its end time (a recurring theme among Marxists since 1848). At the heart of this concept are indications that capital accumulation is running up against some inherent limits. just as the hucksters of private capital are crowing that so-called Artificial Intelligence will usher in a capitalist utopia of unlimited prosperity (for whom?). Socialists warn the world’s working classes to prepare instead for a late-capitalist dystopia\, characterized by irreversible damage to the natural environment\, wars brought on by new modes of global competition among capitals\, and the inevitable squeeze on capitalist profits and human labor if robotic production alters the organic composition of capital to the extent predicted by the AI boosters. SUMMARY:Hegel for Radicals: The Philosophy of Right
DESCRIPTION:The MEP’s recurring series Hegel for Radicals continues this Spring with a ten-session seminar on Hegel’s Philosophy of Right.  This work is a treatise on the meaning of freedom and the kind of institutions that are required for its realization.  We will debunk previous myths that Hegel was a reactionary spokesman of the Prussian monarchy and show the truly radical view that Hegel championed under difficult conditions of censorship and political persecution\, much like those of our own time. This study of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right is inspired by the insight of Andy Blunden\, in his recent book\, The Capital-Logic Debate\, that the key to understanding Marx’s dialectical method in his investigation of Capital lies in understanding the method Hegel employed in the Philosophy of Right. \nFor the main text the preferred version is Outlines of the Philosophy of Right\, edited by Stephen Houlgate (Oxford University Press\, 2008). Also acceptable is Elements of the Philosophy of Right\, edited by Allen W. Wood (Cambridge University Press\, 1991). \nPrevious classes in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit and/or the Science of Logic will be helpful but are not a requirement for these sessions. Each participant will be expected to make at least one presentation during the ten-week seminar. Familiarity with this work greatly aids any reading of Marx’s Capital. Alex Steinberg will guide participants past the legendary obstacles to understanding this supremely concrete application of Hegel’s dialectical method. \nAlex Steinberg is the facilitator of Hegel for Radicals. He is an independent scholar who has taught and published on topics such as the philosophy of Heidegger and Nazism\, Marxism and humanism\, Hegel’s philosophy of history and Hegel’s Phenomenology at various alternative educational institutions. Alex has also been involved with the governance of WBAI radio in New York and its parent organization\, Pacifica\, most recently as the Chair of the Pacifica National Board from 2020-2021.

From geographical borders to epistemological categories\, limits and edges initiate the dialectical moment of thought\, overturning or transcending the axioms and foundations from which it has sprung. Setting limits to the working day (minimums\, then maximums) or to wages (maximums\, then minimums\, as Marx describes in Capital‘s chapters on primitive accumulation’s legislative efforts) are only the tip of the iceberg. So where do we experience the limits—or limitlessness—of our worlds? \nIn two linked panels\, the Yale Working Group on Globalization and Culture explores the limits and limitations of our world—sensory\, spatial\, temporal\, social\, cultural\, political. In their geographical and methodological variety\, our papers collectively map out the terrain of this keyword\, and seek to determine the bounds\, so to speak\, of studying\, theorizing and making culture at the limit. \nIn this our second panel we question the socio-spatial manifestations of the limit and its political and property avatars: the border the boundary\, and the zone. Across these contributions\, to think at the extremity is to reevaluate the whole\, querying how limits animate entire systems of thought and distinction. (Panel 1 details here) \nNathaniel LaCelle-Peterson examines the function of infrastructure in the thought of Louis Althusser\, where it appears as substitute for “base” as the opposing category of “superstructure” in his structuralist articulation of the mode of production. Alan J. Alaniz analyzes the built and unbuilt architectural projects of the midcentury Mexico-United States borderlands to illuminate the spatial consequences of geopolitics at the international divide.  Madeleine Han examines the role of contemporary art in the transformation of Korea’s Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)—a geographical and imagined ‘limit’ marked by dreams of deferred reunification—into a visitation site. Javier Porras Madero explores how combined and uneven development along the Mexico-Guatemala borderlands produced newly alienated subjects who became the central social components of twentieth-century nationalisms. \nThe Yale Working Group on Globalization and Culture is an interdisciplinary cultural studies research group that has been practicing at Yale University since 2003 Over the years\, we have presented our collective work at Crossroads in Cultural Studies the Irish Association for American Studies\, the Cultural Studies Association\, Historical Materialism\, the Marxist Education Project\, and the World Social Forum. Past projects have appeared as “Going into Debt\,” online in Social Text’s Periscope\, and as “Space and Times of Occupation” in Transforming Anthropology; a collective interview regarding “Matters of Life and Death” was published in Revue Française d’Études Américaines. Nathaniel LaCelle-Peterson is a doctoral researcher in Film & Media Studies and Comparative Literature at Yale University. Alan J. Alaniz is a doctoral researcher in the Yale School of Architecture. In their geographical and methodological variety\, our papers collectively map out the terrain of this keyword\, and seek to determine the bounds\, so to speak\, of studying\, theorizing and making culture at the limit. \nThe first panel\, Thresholds: Limit Cases\,  takes on the exceptions that determine the rule. These limit cases of sound\, shock\, spirit\, and symbol problematize and contest the generic and ideological frames they operate within. Probing the thresholds of perception\, we address experience that re-taxonomizes the social and sensorial order. (Panel 2 details here) \nSuvij Sudershan asks why the qawwal (a traditional Sufi devotional form that often puts written poetry to music) came to enjoy uniquely prominent position within the global meta-genre of “World Music”? Michelle Chow explores Asian/American transnational ecopoetics\, an the literary\, philosophic\, cultural\, and botanical attempts to contend with the post-nuclear environment\, by centering around one tree\, the gingko. Jane Zhang links the origins of the first aid kit in railway surgery to the broader exchange between emergency protocol and industrial management. Michael Denning takes up Fredric Jameson’s challenge to “political” readings of Marx in the context of recent “republican” re-readings of the political dimension of “Citizen Marx\,” reconsidering the limits of and barriers to\, the political. And Sam Levin charts the shifting limits of belonging on the global far right as it coalesced in the last quarter of the 20th century. \nThe Yale Working Group on Globalization and Culture is an interdisciplinary cultural studies research group that has been practicing at Yale University since 2003 Over the years\, we have presented our collective work at Crossroads in Cultural Studies the Irish Association for American Studies\, the Cultural Studies Association\, Historical Materialism\, the Marxist Education Project\, and the World Social Forum. Past projects have appeared as “Going into Debt\,” online in Social Text’s Periscope\, and as “Space and Times of Occupation” in Transforming Anthropology. A collective interview regarding “Matters of Life and Death” was published in Revue Française d’Études Américaines. Suvij Sudershan is a doctoral researcher at Yale’s Department of English. His dissertation is on the representation of ground-rent and class-formation in 19th and early-20th century novels from Ireland\, England\, India\, and South Africa. Michelle Chow is a doctoral researcher in Yale’s English Literature and Film & Media Studies program\, and a Graduate Fellow of Yale’s Center for the Study of Race Indigeneity\, & Transnational Migration (RITM). Jane Zhang is a doctoral researcher in Yale’s Combined Program in Comparative Literature and Film & Media Studies. Her research focuses on the intersecting histories of popular literature and vernacular medicine from the 19th century onwards. Michael Denning teaches cultural studies in the American Studies program at Yale University; among his books are Culture in the Age of Three Worlds and Noise Uprising. He has taught on topics such as the Philosophy of Heidegger and Nazism\, Marxism and Humanism\, and Hegel’s Philosophy of History at various alternative educational institutions and informally. He was a Conference Presenter at the First International Conference on Trotsky in Havana\, Cuba. Alex has been also involved with the governance of WBAI radio in New York and its parent organization\, Pacifica\, most recently as the Chair of the Pacifica National Board from 2019-2021.

DESCRIPTION:Volume III of Capital – The Process of Capitalist Production as a Whole – integrates and completes Marx’s analysis\, enabling us to understand and make sense of how the phenomena we see occurring on the surface of society are related to the underlying system of capitalism. It is essential to understanding the current moment of late capitalist/imperialist development\, in which we see the rise of rentier and finance capital and the commodification of debt; continuously rising prices that bring still more poverty and starvation; new technologies turned into means of extracting rents; the privatization of public spaces\, properties and institutions; and the list goes on. \nParticipants in this long-running study group have been closely reading and discussing Volume III\, using a hybrid approach to cover the entire book. For key chapters or sections\, we do a line-by-line reading with pauses for questions and commentary. Participants read other sections on their own\, along with occasional supplemental materials such as passages from Beverley Best’s highly praised companion to Volume III\, The Automatic Fetish. DESCRIPTION:A video of this November 8\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nBrian Kwoba‘s recently published Hubert Harrison: Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism introduces the working-class journalist\, activist\, and educator Hubert Henry Harrison (1883-1927)\, who generated an array of visionary solutions to the systemic injustices of his day. After blazing a trail for Black workers and organizers in the Socialist Party of America and the Paterson Silk Strike of 1913\, Harrison emerged as the most prominent Black freethinker and free lover of his generation. He also practiced armed self-defense and called for an anti-capitalist\, anti-imperialist “Colored International” alliance in the face of European colonization in Africa\, Asia\, and Latin America. Most spectacularly\, Harrison’s Liberty League of Negro Americans catalyzed the rise of Marcus Garvey and the largest international organization of African people in modern history. Because of his fearless radicalism\, however\, the full scope of Harrison’s revolutionary legacy has been largely erased from popular memory … until now. \nDr. Brian Kwoba was born in Manchester\, Connecticut\, and raised in Boulder\, Colorado. After earning his undergraduate degree in philosophy at Cornell University\, he spent six years teaching high school and middle school history and social studies in Boston before heading to the University of Oxford for his doctoral degree in history. Dr. Kwoba is currently an associate professor of history and also the director of African and African American Studies at the University of Memphis. Over the past two decades\, Dr. Kwoba has been an activist on issues including anti-imperialism\, immigrant workers rights\, climate justice\, Falastin\, decolonizing education\, pan-Africanism\, and the movement for Black lives. Michael Lazarus is the author of Absolute Ethical Life: Aristotle\, Hegel and Marx\, and Jensen Suther is the author of True Materialism: Hegelian Marxism and the Modernist Struggle for Freedom.  Lazarus situates Marx within a shared tradition of ethical inquiry\, placing him in close dialogue with Aristotle and Hegel. His book traces the ethical and political dimensions of Marx’s work missed by Hannah Arendt and Alasdair MacIntyre\, two of the most profound critics of modern politics and ethics. Ultimately\, the book claims that Marx’s value-form theory is both a continuation of Aristotelian and Hegelian themes and at the same time his most distinctive theoretical achievement. In True Materialism\, Suther engages with three titans of literary modernism—Franz Kafka\, Thomas Mann\, and Samuel Beckett—to pursue not only an account of Hegel’s materialism but also a new critique of capitalist modernity. Breaking with the received view of Marx’s relation to German Idealism\, the book argues that the materialist critique of capitalist production is inseparable from Hegel’s idea that the demand for freedom is a demand for mutual recognition. \nMichael Lazarus is a postdoctoral research fellow at Deakin University. \nJensen Suther received his PhD from Yale University and is currently a Junior Fellow in the Harvard Society of Fellows.

SUMMARY:Trotsky in New York Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Socialists and Immigrants in the Lower East Side\nJoin Alex Steinberg and Daniel Lazare for a historical walking tour of Lower Manhattan as we explore some of the places where Leon Trotsky visited and worked during his nine week stay in New York in early 1917. \nWe will explore the culture of the radicalized immigrant communities of Yiddish-speaking Jews from Eastern Europe as well as German\, Russian\, Italian and Greek immigrants. These communities supported a thriving socialist movement in New York.  And in 1917\, ferment and struggle increased dramatically as America entered World War I on April 6\, 1917 and Russia’s revolutionary wave exploded a few months later. \nAfter beginning at Cooper Union\, we will walk to 77 St. Marks Place\, which housed the offices of the Russian language newspaper Novy Mir and where Trotsky and other future Bolshevik leaders worked daily. From there\, the tour will walk to the building of the Jewish Daily Forward in Seward Park\, where we will learn of Trotsky’s dramatic confrontation with more conservative socialists. As we walk we will pass by a number of places that were important in understanding the history of the social struggles of immigrants in a New York very different than the city we know today. \nLed by Alex Steinberg and Daniel Lazare. Alex is a frequent teacher of Marxist Education Project classes on the philosophy of Hegel and related topics. DESCRIPTION:Film Noir\, Greed\, and Corporate Graft in LaLa Land\nA five-session reading group with novelist and scholar Dennis Broe\, presented by the Institute for the Radical Imagination and co-sponsored by the MEP\, LA Progressive and People’s World\nOrson Welles once called Los Angeles “a bright\, guilty place\,” and that is as true today as it was in the 1940s when Welles coined this description. Dennis Broe leads a group reading of his five Los Angeles novels* set in the film-noir period of the late 1940s and early 1950s. The contradictions we will unearth in that postwar period\, the period of crime films that visually documented this seedy reality\, have never been resolved\, only continually papered over\, and so they resound today. We will look at five industries and moments in this period with a view toward explaining how the postwar period set the tone for what was to follow\, leading to the present era of a vast income disparity and frequent “natural\,” though totally avoidable\, disasters. \n*The novels – Left of Eden\, A Hello to Arms\, The Precinct with the Golden Arm\, The House That Buff Built\, and The Dark Ages – are detailed in this syllabus. DESCRIPTION:A video of this May 17\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nAuthor Andy Merrifield presents Roses for Gramsci\, a remarkable personal journey through the life and writings of the great Sardinian Marxist\, Antonio Gramsci. \nIn the summer of 2023\, Merrifield and his family move from the UK to Rome to begin a new life. Soon after his arrival\, the author visits Gramsci’s grave and decides to take a volunteer position helping to maintain the cemetery. At the Non-Catholic Cemetery\, home also to the great Romantics\, Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Keats\, he keeps a watchful eye on Gramsci’s tombstone\, talking to some of his visitors\, admiring the roses and notes that Gramsci’s guests leave\, and communing with the sentinel cat that keeps watch near the gravesite. Thus begins Merrifield’s deep dive into Gramsci’s life almost a century after his death. \nThe result is a stunning portrait that offers fresh insights into nearly every aspect of Gramsci’s often tortured existence: a childhood scarred by severe health problems; his grasp of the culture of workers and peasants; his growing understanding of political economy; his friendship with the economist Piero Sraffa; his frustration trying to communicate with and be father to the son he never saw; his generosity and kindness. SUMMARY:60 Years Since the April Revolution in Santo Domingo
DESCRIPTION:Sixty years ago\, on April 24\, 1965\, tens of thousands of ordinary people in Santo Domingo (also known as the Dominican Republic) joined a popular revolt which sought to restore President Juan Bosch to power after he was overthrown in a US-backed\, right-wing military coup in September\, 1963. Posing a threat to both local elites and Washington’s geopolitical expansion in the Caribbean\, the April Revolution\, and the subsequent anti-imperialist resistance that sprang up against US military occupation\, contributed to the development of anti-imperialist politics in Santo Domingo and beyond. \nJoin us on May 3 for a panel to commemorate the 6oth anniversary of the April Revolution and discuss its political implications\, the role of working-class Afro-Dominicans\, women\, LGBTQ people\, Haitian internationalist fighters\, socialists\, writers and artists\, as well as the worldwide international solidarity movement that ensued in the face of imperialist onslaught. \nGénesis Lara is a scholar of Caribbean and Afro-Latinx Studies. Raised in both the Bronx and Miami\, her research focuses on gender\, Blackness\, social movements\, human rights\, and diaspora world making. She explores the ways Afro-Caribbean women mobilized grief and mourning as ways to contest state violence in the twentieth century. Her work poses larger questions of ways Black people have conceived and fought for human rights. Génesis Lara completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Florida and her PhD at the University of California\, Davis. \nGina Goico is a multidisciplinary artist\, scholar\, and self-proclaimed necia. Goico navigates their identity and the spaces where they exist in the Dominican Republic and the United States through their work\, which ranges from embroidery to installations\, ink drawings\, and performances. Goico’s research focuses on how the aesthetics\, performances\, and organizing of self-identifying black Dominican artists and organizers operate as strategies that queer state-circulated identity in the Dominican Republic and its New York City diaspora. Goico was a Van Lier Fellow and artist in residence with Smack Mellon. They also participated in the AIM fellowship at The Bronx Museum of the Arts and were artist-in-residence at The Laundromat Project Kelly Street. Goico holds an AAS in Fine Arts and Illustration from Altos de Chavón and a BFA in Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design. They also have an MA in Arts Politics from NYU and are PhD candidate in Performing and Media Arts at Cornell University. \nAmaury Rodriguez has been involved in Haitian-Dominican solidarity activism for more than two decades. His writing has appeared in NACLA\, El Salto\, Esendom and Jacobin. He is co-editor\, with Raj Chetty\, of a special issue of The Black Scholar journal dedicated to Dominican Black Studies. \nMatías Bosch Carcuro studied Environmental Sciences and Arts at the Central University of Chile. He has a MA in Social Sciences with a minor in Politics and a MA in Public Management and Policy from the University of Chile. He is also a University professor and researcher on political economy\, labor\, development models\, social rights\, social protection and security systems\, as well as state policies targeting discriminated and overexploited working people.

DESCRIPTION:A video of this March 26\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nAs some of the most powerful capitalists in history are openly disavowing political democracy and calling for the unbridled rule of private wealth\, now is a good time to revisit Karl Marx’s revolutionary republicanism and his ideas about political power and social classes. In his recently published Citizen Marx: Republicanism and the Formation of Karl Marx’s Social and Political Thought\, Bruno Leipold argues that Karl Marx’s thinking was deeply informed by republicanism. Challenging common depictions of Marx that downplay or ignore his commitment to politics\, democracy\, and freedom\, Leipold shows that Marx viewed democratic political institutions as crucial to overcoming the social unfreedom and domination of capitalism.  \nPlacing Marx’s republican communism in its historical context—but not consigning him to that context—Leipold traces Marx’s shifting relationship to republicanism across three broad periods. First\, Marx began his political life as a republican committed to a democratic republic in which citizens held active popular sovereignty. Second\, he transitioned to communism\, criticizing republicanism but incorporating the republican opposition to arbitrary power into his social critiques. He argued that although a democratic republic was not sufficient for emancipation\, it was necessary for it. Third\, spurred by the events of the Paris Commune of 1871\, he came to view popular control in representation and public administration as essential to the realization of communism. Leipold shows how Marx positioned his republican communism to displace both antipolitical socialism and anticommunist republicanism. One of Marx’s great contributions\, Leipold suggests\, was to place politics (and especially democratic politics) at the heart of socialism. \nBruno Leipold is a fellow in political theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science.\nHe is the coeditor of Radical Republicanism: Recovering the Tradition’s Popular Heritage.

Dennis Broe examines this history and sheds light on the ingrained power\, the structural class and racial imbalances\, and the wanton devastation of a city organized not for its people but for its elites. Using Mike Davis’s classic Ecology of Fear as a blueprint\, Broe will put the still smoldering fires in context by looking at five areas: the geological long durée of a land of fires\, earthquakes\, tornados and mudslides; the ecological relationship of the fires to ever more intense global warming; the neoliberal moment of the deterioration of the state in its domestic and global dimensions; the region’s sedimented class and racial inequalities (exemplified by the recently devastated African-American community of Altadena); and the altered character of Los Angeles–and especially “Hollywood”–as no longer simply a site of imagined disasters but one that is now all too real. \nDennis Broe\, a journalist\, critic and scholar who has taught at the Sorbonne and spoken at many MEP events\, is the author of many books on film noir\, media\, and television\, including five novels set in Los Angeles in the 1940s and 50s\, the latest of which is The Dark Ages\, about the coming of McCarthyism to Hollywood.

DESCRIPTION:Weekly sessions on Tuesdays at 1 pm through December 2024 \nIs Artificial Intelligence (AI\, sic) really the dire threat to the future of humanity as even some of its proponents claim\, or is it a more mundane and familiar threat to working people who face loss of their livelihoods and/or further speed-up and alienation? The entire history of industrial capitalism is punctuated by recurring waves of automation to reduce labor costs and turnover time\, each time provoking strong resistance by the affected workforce. This reading group will probe the history both of AI and computer technology specifically and of working-class resistance to capitalist automation in general. In eight weekly sessions we will read\, discuss\, and critique two recent works: Breaking Things at Work: The Luddites Are Right About Why You Hate Your Job\, by Gavin Mueller; and The Eye of the Master: A Social History of Artificial Intelligence\, by Matteo Pasquinelli. DESCRIPTION:A recording of this October 13\, 2024\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nGiampaolo Conte presents A History of Capitalist Transformation: A Critique of Liberal-Capitalist Reforms\, just published by Routledge. Since the recent financial crises\, the expression “liberal reform” has come to evoke austerity and economic malaise\, especially for the working classes and a segment of the middle class. Conte’s historical research demonstrates that the chief purpose of such reforms has been to integrate semi-peripheral states into the capitalist world-economy. Rules\, institutions\, attitudes\, and procedures are imposed in accord with the economic and political interests of capitalist élites and hegemonic states – first by Britain\, then by the United States. In all situations\, the velvet glove barely conceals the armored fist. The goals and methods – more or less the same today as 300 years ago – promote the ongoing dissolution of traditional societies in the peripheries of the contemporary world. \n“A fascinating account of state debt as a mechanism in international relations forcing liberal reforms on the capitalist periphery\, doing away with ways of social life in conflict with the requirements of modern capital formation.
