SUMMARY:The New Power Elite: C. Wright Mills Revisited
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS POSTPONED – new date to be announced\nIn 1956\, sociologist C. Wright Mills published The Power Elite\, a study that challenged conventional postwar assumptions that the United States was a society of democracy and upward mobility. Mills analyzed how power and social status in the 1950s had become concentrated in an immense corporate-government power complex that overrode the country’s apparently democratic and egalitarian institutions. Mills feared that\, if not constrained\, concentration and centralization of power at the top of modern society would result in a revival of the violent capitalist authoritarianism or fascism that marked the 1920s and 30s. The Power Elite had a profound influence on the rise of the New Left and contributed to the revival of Marxism in the 1960s (although Mills himself was not a Marxist). \nIn The New Power Elite\, Heather Gautney offers us a contemporary companion to Mills’s work through a fresh critique for the new millennium. She takes up the problems that Mills addressed and echoes his outrage over the injustices and ruin brought by today’s elites. She grounds her analysis more in political economy than in institutional authority as Mills did. Gautney also accounts for changes in global capitalism over the last forty years\, arguing that neoliberalism and the centering of the market in political and social life has ushered in ever more extreme forms of violence and exploitation and a drift toward authoritarianism. \nHeather Gautney\, Associate Professor of Sociology at Fordham University\, has authored numerous books and articles on social inequality\, U.S. politics\, labor\, and social movements\, and opinion essays for major news outlets. She has served as a senior policy advisor to Senator Bernie Sanders. \n(This event was originally scheduled for Wednesday\, April 19.)

SUMMARY:Global Political Struggles of the Working Class

DAVID HARVEY turns to Marx’s Grundrisse and to W.E.B.Du Bois’ idea of  double consciousness\, to locate a tension in anti-capitalist politics between the possibilities found in the creative destruction and technological revolutions of capitalism and the alienation and loss of human potentiality which is a result of the same process. The path to socialism requires navigating the contradictions of this double consciousness. \nIn “Social Sources of Political Polarization in Russia”. ILYA MATVEEV and OLEG ZHURAVLEV offer a compelling account of rising urban-rural and core-periphery polarization in Russia under the authoritarian nationalism of Vladimir Putin\, which until recently was able to rely on the apathetic indifference of the people and general appeals to social stability to maintain unchallenged power. \nIn “The Far Right\, Corporate Power\, and Social Struggles in Brazil”. VIRGINA FONTES\, ANA GARCIA\, and REJANE HOEVELER contrast the fictitious polarization in Brazil between electoral oppositions that quarrel over cultural issues without challenging the hegemony of neoliberal capitalism and the real polarization resulting from a combative working class that is developing\, as Gramsci says\, a spirit of cleavage\, determined to pursue its class interests. \nDAVID HARVEY is Distinguished Professor of anthropology and geography at the City University of New York. ILYA MATVEEV teaches politics at the Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration\, St. Petersburg; OLEG ZHURAVLEV is a researcher at the Public Sociology Laboratory\, Center for Independent Social Research\, St. Petersburg. DESCRIPTION:Study conducted with Piruz Alemi\nFour more sessions remain\n \nANTONIO GRAMSCI is widely known throughout the world for his impact on social and political thought. In this seminar we will cover select key passages of Joseph Buttigieg translation of Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks. This is the first full version (Not a selection) of an English translation of eight Notebooks of Gramsci never provided before that gives the reader to then selectively focus in areas of their own interest and research\, without a cut. \nWe will delve into key themes and concepts related tocivil society and state: politics and the arts\, racism\, class and gender\, religion\, linguistics and other methods of analysis\, critical theory\, mass media and cinema\, hegemony and subalternity studies as well as the role of intellectuals and activists in discovering new methods and languages to be transformative. A Gramscian “Past & Present” approach is key to our work. \nThroughout these sessions\, we will attempt to connect our cultures and life experiences with contemporary struggles. We will also explore those who influenced Gramsci\, particularly Marx\, but also Machiavelli and Croce. \nThese seminars are accessible to people at all levels of familiarity with Gramsci’s work\, including those just beginning their studies of Gramsci. \nPiruz Alemi holds a PhD in political economy from New School for Social Research as well as a MFA in documentary film making from CCNY. He is director of the People of Color International Cultural Exchange Film Festival and teaches at the John Jay College of the City University of New York. \nAll events and classes are sliding scale.
