SUMMARY:'Roses for Gramsci' with Andy Merrifield
DESCRIPTION:A video of this May 17\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nAuthor Andy Merrifield presents Roses for Gramsci\, a remarkable personal journey through the life and writings of the great Sardinian Marxist\, Antonio Gramsci. \nIn the summer of 2023\, Merrifield and his family move from the UK to Rome to begin a new life. Soon after his arrival\, the author visits Gramsci’s grave and decides to take a volunteer position helping to maintain the cemetery. At the Non-Catholic Cemetery\, home also to the great Romantics\, Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Keats\, he keeps a watchful eye on Gramsci’s tombstone\, talking to some of his visitors\, admiring the roses and notes that Gramsci’s guests leave\, and communing with the sentinel cat that keeps watch near the gravesite. Thus begins Merrifield’s deep dive into Gramsci’s life almost a century after his death. \nThe result is a stunning portrait that offers fresh insights into nearly every aspect of Gramsci’s often tortured existence: a childhood scarred by severe health problems; his grasp of the culture of workers and peasants; his growing understanding of political economy; his friendship with the economist Piero Sraffa; his frustration trying to communicate with and be father to the son he never saw; his generosity and kindness. Above all\, Merrifield illuminates how Gramsci kept his humanity\, suffering horribly in prison while writing a revolutionary classic\, The Prison Notebooks. Roses for Gramsci is an evocative and indelible book. \nAndy Merrifield is an independent scholar and author of a dozen books including\, most recently\, Beyond Plague Urbanism and Marx\, Dead and Alive: Reading “Capital” in Precarious Times. He has written numerous articles\, essays and reviews appearing in Monthly Review\, The Nation\, Harper’s Magazine\, New Left Review\, The Guardian\, Literary Hub\, Jacobin\, and Dissent. He is a prolific writer about urbanism\, political theory and literature.

SUMMARY:The New Power Elite: C. Wright Mills Revisited
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS POSTPONED – new date to be announced\nIn 1956\, sociologist C. Wright Mills published The Power Elite\, a study that challenged conventional postwar assumptions that the United States was a society of democracy and upward mobility. Mills analyzed how power and social status in the 1950s had become concentrated in an immense corporate-government power complex that overrode the country’s apparently democratic and egalitarian institutions. Mills feared that\, if not constrained\, concentration and centralization of power at the top of modern society would result in a revival of the violent capitalist authoritarianism or fascism that marked the 1920s and 30s. The Power Elite had a profound influence on the rise of the New Left and contributed to the revival of Marxism in the 1960s (although Mills himself was not a Marxist). \nIn The New Power Elite\, Heather Gautney offers us a contemporary companion to Mills’s work through a fresh critique for the new millennium. She takes up the problems that Mills addressed and echoes his outrage over the injustices and ruin brought by today’s elites. She grounds her analysis more in political economy than in institutional authority as Mills did. Gautney also accounts for changes in global capitalism over the last forty years\, arguing that neoliberalism and the centering of the market in political and social life has ushered in ever more extreme forms of violence and exploitation and a drift toward authoritarianism. \nHeather Gautney\, Associate Professor of Sociology at Fordham University\, has authored numerous books and articles on social inequality\, U.S. politics\, labor\, and social movements\, and opinion essays for major news outlets. She has served as a senior policy advisor to Senator Bernie Sanders. \n(This event was originally scheduled for Wednesday\, April 19.)

SUMMARY:The Novels of Nanni Balestrini with the MEP Literature Group
DESCRIPTION:The MEP Literature Group resumes this fall/winter and continues its tradition of reading international political fiction. We will read several works by the Italian author Nanni Balestrini\, including We Want Everything and The Unseen. These selections are in honor of Michael Lardner\, an enthusiast of Balestrini’s writing and the convener of the MEP’s literature group for many years. Balestrini\, born in 1935\, had by the early 1960s an active literary career in Gruppo 63\, edited journals\, and participated in computer experiments. From literary spats\, he moved to political involvement during Italy’s Years of Lead (ca. 1968-1988). Upon being charged with membership in a guerrilla group he fled to Paris and later to Germany. We Want Everything chronicles a rebellion centered at the Fiat Mirafiori factory in Turin; The Unseen continues the story of Italy’s explosive 1970s when the young and unemployed of cities joined workers in an unexpectedly militant movement known simply as Autonomy (Autonomia). Its “politics of refusal” called forth draconian repression from the employers and the state. We will begin with selections of Balestrini’s poetry.

We have to ask: Is it possible to reverse this reality\, and once again talk of the necessity of communism? \nDon Milligan has been a gay activist\, trade unionist\, and a member of the communist movement for many decades. He published the pamphlet\, The Politics of Homosexuality in 1973\, and The Truth About the Aids Panic\, with Michael Fitzpatrick in 1987\, and also completed a doctoral thesis\, ‘The Aesthetic of Emancipation: A study of the relation between Raymond Williams’s socialism and his literary criticism\, cultural analysis and theoretical writings’\, in 2003. This is the first full version (Not a selection) of an English translation of eight Notebooks of Gramsci never provided before that gives the reader to then selectively focus in areas of their own interest and research\, without a cut. \nWe will delve into key themes and concepts related tocivil society and state: politics and the arts\, racism\, class and gender\, religion\, linguistics and other methods of analysis\, critical theory\, mass media and cinema\, hegemony and subalternity studies as well as the role of intellectuals and activists in discovering new methods and languages to be transformative. A Gramscian “Past & Present” approach is key to our work. \nThroughout these sessions\, we will attempt to connect our cultures and life experiences with contemporary struggles. This cheerful message hides a reality of digital surveillance\, aggressive anti-union tactics and disciplinary layoffs. Reminiscent of the tumult of early industrial capitalism\, the hundreds of thousands of workers who help Amazon fulfil consumers’ desire are part of an experiment in changing the way we all work. \nIn this book\, Alessandro Delfanti takes readers inside Amazon’s warehouses to show how technological advancements and managerial techniques subdue the workers rather than empower them\, as seen in the sensors that track workers’ every movement around the floor and algorithmic systems that re-route orders to circumvent worker sabotage. He looks at new technologies including robotic arms trained by humans and augmented reality goggles\, showing that their aim is to standardize\, measure and discipline human work rather than replace it. \nDespite its innovation\, Amazon will always need living labor’s flexibility and low cost. And as the warehouse is increasingly automated\, worker discontent increases. Striking under the banner “we are not robots”\, employees have shown that they are acutely aware of such contradictions. SUMMARY:Augmented Exploitation: Artificial Intelligence\, Automation\, Work and Changes in the Labor Process
DESCRIPTION:A 6 Week Close-Reading and Discussion series \nConducted with the Capital Studies Group\nIn the Introduction to Augmented Exploitation\, co-editors Phoebe Moore and Jamie Woodcock point up two main problems with how automation and artificial intelligence are being discussed as the end of the first quarter of the 21st century draws near. Number one is the claim that Al is changing the labor process in new and unprecedented ways. But capitalists have always introduced machines in order to increase the amount of what each worker can produce in a given period of time. This is where the second problem comes in—either a certain process will be automated\, or it will not—a binary that focuses on machines and not on the workers who operate them. Rather than the prospects of automation and interpretive learning replacing workers\, we need rather to see that these are augmentations of the labor process. \n  \nAugmented Exploitation is divided into three areas: Making It\, Faking It\, and Breaking It. Going beyond platform work and the gig economy\, the authors explore emerging forms of algorithmic governance and Al-augmented apps that collect data about workers and consumers in innovative ways\, but also to to keep wages and worker representation under control. The contributors to Augmented Exploitation show that workers are not taking these dramatic changes lying down; they present case studies of new and exciting forms of resistance that are springing up across the globe. Join us to learn more of the reality of the impact of Artificial Intelligence (Al) on workers’ lives. \nDuring these six sessions we will also review several articles from this year’s Socialist Register\, Beyond Digital Capitalism: New Ways of Living. In particular\, we will discuss “The Time of Our Lives”\, Bryan Palmer’s essay on capital and temporality\, and Larry Lohmann’s essay on “Interpretive Learning”. Time\, always a frontier of class struggle\, pushed by automation and other digital management controls that are ever-present today\, is now at the forefront of contentious labor-capital relations. Lohmann stresses a number of challenges that interpretation machines have presented to movement organizing and in response argues that it is important to understand the continuities between industrial-era and digital-era value-creation rather than to only focus on the differences. He also emphasizes that the contradiction between living and dead labor that Marx identified not only persists in today’s digital economy\, but also remains fundamental both to understanding crisis and to identifying possibilities for radical political change. \n The CAPITAL STUDIES GROUP has been meeting on Saturdays for more than four years.
