DESCRIPTION:Join the MEP’s Ecosocialist Study Group as we reconvene to consider two new Verso titles that are provoking wide discussion and debate: Matt Huber’s Climate Change as Class War: Building Socialism on a Warming Planet\, and The Future Is Degrowth: A Guide to a World Beyond Capitalism\, by Matthias Schmelzer\, Aaron Vansintjan\, and Andrea Vetter. As one reviewer noted\, “Both take as foundational premises that we must move beyond capitalism to solve the climate crisis\, yet they critique political economy in fundamentally different ways. While The Future is Degrowth argues for abolishing the capitalist growth imperative\, Climate Change as Class War argues against degrowth and advocates for a decommodified Green New Deal.” We will address such questions as: What do advocates of “degrowth” mean by this term? How and why do capitalist growth and accumulation threaten human survival? What are the most useful frameworks to help us organize movements for climate justice? What demands should we prioritize and what lessons can we draw from previous historical movements? How can utopian thinking expand our horizons in what must be a massive fight for a more sustainable future? Where does working-class organizing come into the picture\, and what other allies and social forces can be mobilized? \nTen weekly sessions\, convened by Fred Murphy and Steve Knight\, who have co-led the Ecosocialist Study Group since 2016.

Peter Gelderloos argues that international governmental responses to the climate emergency are structurally incapable of solving the crisis. But there are possibilities. \n \nAcross the world\, grassroots networks of local communities are working to realize their visions of an alternative revolutionary response to planetary destruction\, often pitted against the new megaprojects promoted by greenwashed alternative energy infrastructures and the neocolonialist\, technocratic policies that are the forerunners of the Green New Deal. \nGelderloos interviews food sovereignty activists in Venezuela\, Indigenous communities reforesting their lands in Brazil and anarchists fighting biofuel plantations in Indonesia\, looking at the battles that have cancelled airports\, stopped pipelines\, and helped the most marginalized to fight borders and environmental racism\, to transform their cities\, to win a dignified survival. \nAll author royalties and proceeds from this event will go to the Indigenous reforesting initiatives in Brazil and anarchists fighting biofuels in Indonesia. \nPETER GELDERLOOS is a writer and movement participant. SUMMARY:Rubbish Belongs to the Poor
DESCRIPTION:Hygienic Enclosure and the Waste Commons\nPresentation and discussion with author Patrick O’Hare\nRubbish. Waste. Trash. Whatever term you choose to describe the things we throw away\, the connotations are the same; of something dirty\, useless and incontrovertibly ‘bad’. But does such a dismissive rendering mask a more nuanced reality? \nIn Rubbish Belongs to the Poor\, Patrick O’Hare journeys to the heart of Uruguay’s waste disposal system in order to reconceptualize rubbish as a 21st century commons\, at risk of enclosure. On a giant landfill site outside the capital Montevideo we meet the book’s central protagonists\, the ‘classifiers’: waste-pickers who recover and recycle materials in and around its fenced but porous perimeter. Here the struggle of classifiers against the enclosure of the landfill\, justified on the grounds of hygiene\, is brought into dialogue with other historical and contemporary enclosures – from urban privatizations to rural evictions — to shed light on the nature of contemporary forms of capitalist dispossession. \nSupplementing this rich ethnography with the author’s own insights from dumpster diving in the UK\, the book analyzes capitalism’s relations with its material surpluses and what these tell us about its expansionary logics\, limits and liminal spaces. Rubbish Belongs to the Poor ultimately proposes a fundamental rethinking of the links between waste\, capitalism and dignified work. \nPatrick O’Hare is a social anthropologist and activist. He studied and taught historical sociology at the New School for Social Research. SUMMARY:The Bisbee Deportation / The Battle of Blair Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Both of these new books are essential to having an understanding of the history of American class struggles.\nI’ll Forget It When I Die: The Bisbee Deportation of 1917 (AK Press\, 2021)\nMitchell Abidor\nDid you ever hear the story about 1\,186 men kidnapped in Arizona and dumped in a desert 200 miles away? \nOn July 12\, 1917\, in the mining town of Bisbee Arizona\, twelve hundred striking miners and their supporters were rounded up by forces organized by the town sheriff and the mining companies\, marched through the town\, parked in the town’s baseball field\, and then put in boxcars and shipped into the New Mexican desert. The deportees were largely members or supporters of the radical IWW labor union and mostly foreign-born. The roundup and deportation were both part of a xenophobic and anti-radical campaign being carried out by capital and their allies of local state and national police in complete coordination. This pattern was common throughout the country in the early days of US participation in World War I. The mine owners then took control of the town and patrols prevented any union miners from even entering it. This little-known story is a shocking and fascinating one on its own\, but the sentiments exploited and exposed in Bisbee in 1917 speak to America today. \nOn Dark and Bloody Ground:An Oral History of the West Virginia Mine Wars (West Virginia University Press\, 2021)\nAnne T. Lawrence\nThe Battle of Blair Mountain marked the culmination of the West Virginia mine wars\, a series of battles in the early 20th century pitting coal miners trying to join the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) against the mine operators who opposed them. Given the mines’ dangerous working conditions\, low pay\, and the abuse miners and their families were subjected to at company towns\, workers decided to organize. In order to thwart what they saw as a threat to their industry\, mine operators hired armed guards and often partnered with local law enforcement to keep the miners in check When the smoke cleared on the Battle of Blair Mountain\, an estimated 1 million rounds were fired\, dozens were killed\, and 985 miners were arrested. The uprising was suppressed\, but public awareness about the appalling conditions in which the miners were forced to live\, work\, and raise their families grew considerably. \n“The local doctor\, an army veteran\, said he heard about as much shooting that day as he had when American forces assaulted Manila in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. And some of the miners told reporters how much the fighting on Blair Mountain resembled the furious woodland combat they waged against the Germans in the dense Argonne Forest of France.” —a Blair Mountain miner \nFifty years after Lawrence captured the testimonies of many protagonists of the largest labor uprising in United States history\, and one century after nearly 10\,000 armed coal miners confronted some 3\,000 lawmen and strikebreakers in Blair Mountain\, Lawrence’s work is finally available to a general audience in a newly-published book by WVU Press. \nMitchell Abidor is a translator who has published over a dozen books on French radical history and a writer on history\, ideas\, and culture who has appeared in the New York Times\, Dissent\, Foreign Affairs\, the New York Review of Books\, and Jacobin\, among many others. \nAnne T. Lawrence retired in 2017 after a 30-year career on the faculty of the College of Business at San José State University.  She holds a doctorate in sociology from the University of California\, Berkeley.  Anne is currently the chair of a small nonprofit that provides fellowships to early-career writers. \n

SUMMARY:Amakomiti: Grassroots Democracy in South African Shack Settlements
DESCRIPTION:with author Trevor Ngwane\nCan people who live in shantytowns\, shacks and favelas teach us anything about democracy? About how to govern society in a way that is inclusive\, participatory and addresses popular needs? This book argues that they can. In a study conducted in dozens of South Africa’s shack settlements\, where more than 9 million people live\, Trevor Ngwane finds thriving shack dwellers’ committees that govern local life\, are responsive to popular needs and provide a voice for the community. These committees\, called ‘amakomiti’ in the Zulu language\, organize the provision of basic services such as water\, sanitation\, public works and crime prevention especially during settlement establishment. \nAmakomiti argues that\, contrary to common perception\, slum dwellers are in fact an essential part of the urban population\, whose political agency must be recognized and respected. In a world searching for democratic alternatives that serve the many and not the few\, it is to the shantytowns\, rather than the seats of political power\, that we should turn. \nTrevor Ngwane is a scholar activist who spent twenty years as a full-time organizer in South African trade unions\, community organizations and social movements before and after the defeat of apartheid. We will read Liam Campling and Alejandro Colas’s new book Capitalism and the Sea\, in which they analyze these and other sea-related phenomena through a historical and geographical lens. \n \nLongtime socialist FRED MURPHY has led MEP study groups on ecosocialism\, science and technology\, and the history of capitalism since 2015. DESCRIPTION:The Yale Working Group on Globalization and Culture will share our collective research on two ubiquitous words of our contemporary vocabulary: resources and relations. There was a meeting on May 16 (described below in thematic Clusters One)  and the next meeting will take place on June 6. \nThe current WGGC collective of Aanchal Saraf\, Bench Ansfield\, Clara Wilson-Hawken\, Ever Osorio\, Jessica Marion Modi\, Lucero Estrella\, Maru Pabón\, Michael Denning\, Monique Flores Ulysses\, Peter Raccuglia\, Salonee Bhaman\, and Simon Torracinta — work in American studies\, African-American studies\, Latinx studies\, history\, literary criticism\, science and technology studies\, and women’s\, gender and sexuality studies. The first part explores how land\, nature\, people\, and time are conceived of and transformed into “resources”: depictions of land as a resource for migrants\, and of migrants for empires; of Indigenous land as a resource for extraction and settlement; and of time as an abstract resource for leisure in the twentieth century. The second part examines language\, poetry\, and political slogans as resources and relations from post-emancipation Black cultures to contemporary Mexican feminisms. How do the abstractions of the category of “resource” – enforced by states\, settlers\, or science – change the meanings of concrete things? Who gets to define how and for whom resources are made? \nTHEMATIC CLUSTERS TWO: On Sunday June 6\, we will present the final two clusters: Source Memory: Relating Archival Contradictions and The Relations of Human Resources. The first part offers disparate meditations on the complex process of engaging with archival sources. Cohering around the verb “relate” – which means both to form an affinity or kinship with and to narrate a story – we take up stories of a record producer in everything but her own words\, of an immigration bureaucracy’s interrogation of a man and his family\, and of the piecing together of family histories in the intergenerational wake of an earthquake. Our final cluster probes the half-lives of human resources\, from the origins of the discourse of human resources\, to the depletion of inner resources and the politics of “burnout\,” to the valuations of risk and life within viatical insurance in a pandemic. \nThe Working Group on Globalization and Culture http://wggc.yale.edu/ is an interdisciplinary cultural studies laboratory that has been practicing collective research at Yale University since 2003. Over the years\, we have presented work at numerous cultural studies conferences as well at The Marxist Education Project\, the Left Forum\, Occupy Boston\, and the World Social Forum. Significantly\, for the purpose of creolizing the canon\, she considered her continent and the globe from an Eastern Europe that was in constant flux and turmoil. From this relatively peripheral location\, she was far less parochial than many of her more centrally located interlocutors and peers. Indeed\, Luxemburg’s work touched on all the burning issues of her time and ours\, from analysis of concrete revolutionary struggles\, such as those in Poland and Russia\, to showing through her analysis of primitive accumulation that anti-capitalist and anti-colonial struggles had to be intertwined\, to considerations of state sovereignty\, democracy\, feminism\, and racism. She thereby offered reflections that can usefully be taken up and reworked by writers facing continuous and new challenges to undo relations of exploitation through radical economic and social transformation. SUMMARY:Shifting Gears with Sean Sweeney and John Treat
DESCRIPTION:Labor Strategies for Low-Cost Public Transit Mobility\nSean Sweeney and John Treat\nWriting in the 2021 Socialist Register\, Sean Sweeney and John Treat call for a major shift in transport policy: a break from the model of development centered on private personal vehicles to one that places mass public transport at the center of future passenger mobility. The current approach – reliance on incentives and assurances to private investors – has failed miserably. While public transport has grown in many places\, this has not even slowed the rise in transport-related emissions. Similarly\, reliance on small electric vehicles (EVs) as a “replacement technology” for standard cars and trucks has reduced emphasis on minimizing unnecessary or unwanted mobility and exaggerated claims about the potential emissions benefits. \nSean and John will take a global look at road transport to envision urban transport systems that are organized on a “public goods” basis. They argue that the incursions of private corporations such as Uber and Lyft could be repelled\, at least partially\, by improved access to high quality public transport. At the same time\, given the car-dependent development of peri-urban and rural areas\, and the likely expansion of urban space in the coming decades (especially in the Global South)\, advocates of public transport will want to explore how “occupying the platforms” through public car-sharing schemes might meet these needs as part of municipal or communally owned fleets. Reclaiming and expanding public transport can and should be part of a broader project to re-imagine neighborhoods\, cities\, ecosystems\, systems of production\, and circulation. \nSean Sweeney is Director of the International Program for Labor\, Climate\, and Environment at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies. The nation’s CO2 emissions are more than twice those of the US with a GDP just two-thirds as large. China leads the world in renewable energy yet it is building new coal-fired power plants faster than renewables. The country’s lakes\, rivers\, and farmlands are severely polluted yet China’s police state can’t suppress pollution\, even from its own industries. \nThis is the first book to explain these contradictions. Richard Smith explains how the country’s bureaucratic rulers are driven by nationalist-industrialist tendencies that are even more powerful than the drive for profit under ‘normal’ capitalism. Today\, this involves exploring and exposing all the hype and contradictions of the so-called ‘gig economy\,’ where automation’s potential for increased time apart from work is subordinated to surveillance\, hazardous waste\, speed-up\, and much else that makes for contingent work and precarious living. Finding new ways of living cannot but confront both these obstacles.” \nDrawing on an expanded conception of capitalism\, Nancy Fraser constructs an expanded conception of socialism that overcomes the narrow economism of received understandings. Disclosing the capitalist economy’s contradictory and destructive relation to its “non-economic” background conditions\, Fraser contends that socialism must do more than transform the economy. Over and above that desideratum\, it must also transform the economy’s relation to its background conditions\, especially non-human nature\, the unwaged work of social reproduction\, and political power. Finding new ways of living cannot but confront both these obstacles.” \nThe UN’s report on climate change makes clear that ways of living in the 21st century must be premised on the existential threat to our existence posed by multiple ecological threats. The current pandemic underlines this fact. For a sustainable future we have to transform some basic ways of thinking about the world and our place in it\, starting with broadened and more inclusive notions of security\, property and rationality. Instead of private property being the default as it is in capitalism\, public goods/‘the commons’\, should be the priority. And rationality must be understood principally in social terms\, since on the dominant individualistic model fully rational behavior can lead to the destruction of the species. Thus the central focus of socialist strategy in the 21st century should be protecting and radically expanding public goods/the commons. We should use every means we can to raise people’s understanding that they are 1) the only basis of real security; 2) should be accessible to all as a right\, like universal health care\, and hence no one should be excluded by the alleged rights of private property; and 3) are foundational to the most rational way to organize society. The paper considers some examples of strategies that fit this approach\, such as the Green New Deal\, and explores the crucial role of democratic planning both on a societal and a global level. \nNancy Holmstrom is an Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Rutgers University. \nTickets are sliding scale.
