DESCRIPTION:“Scornful neglect and intemperate hostility\, haughty dismissal…\, selective co-optation and … bowdlerization”: this is how Marcello Musto\, author of The Marx Revival\, describes responses to the ideas of Karl Marx by respectable pundits over the past century. To truly appreciate Marx’s thinking\, there is no substitute for a close reading of Capital: A Critique of Political Economy\, Marx’s sustained effort to describe and explain the origin and trajectory of modern society: of “capitalism\,” a system of production that now dominates the most remote corners of the globe. Marx was arguably the first writer on the subject to immerse himself not only in theories of political economy but in concrete economic and sociological data (such as it was at the time). The study of Capital is at the core of the Marxist Education Project. \nParticipants in this class will closely read and discuss Marx’s Capital\, volume 1\, guided by Lisa Maya Knauer and other experienced students of Marx from the MEP. We will use a hybrid approach to cover the entire book. For key chapters or sections\, we will do a line-by-line reading with commentary and occasional supplemental materials. Participants will read other sections on their own\, and we will summarize and discuss when we meet. The course is offered in 11-week segments\, recurring until we have read the entire book (however long that takes). \nLisa Maya Knauer has been involved with Marxist education in New York for her entire adult life\, and has taught a variety of classes at the MEP and its predecessors. Her current activist work focuses on immigrant workers’ rights and indigenous struggles for land and water. DESCRIPTION:A video of this October 29\, 2022\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nIt’s in our food\, our cosmetics\, our fuel and our bodies. Palm oil\, found in half of supermarket products\, has shaped our world. Max Haiven uncovers how the gears of capitalism are literally and metaphorically lubricated by this ubiquitous elixir. With a sweeping\, experimental narrative\, Haiven takes us on a global journey that includes looted treasures\, the American system of mass incarceration\, the history of modern art and the industrialisation of war. Beyond simply calling for more consumer boycotts\, Haiven argues for recognising in palm oil humanity’s profound potential to shape our world beyond racial capitalism and neo-colonial dispossession. \nMax Haiven is a writer and teacher and Canada Research Chair in Culture\, Media and Social Justice. His most recent books are Art after Money\, Money after Art: Creative Strategies Against Financialization (2018) and Revenge Capitalism: The Ghosts of Empire\, the Demons of Capital\, and the Settling of Unpayable Debts (2020). Max also edits VAGABONDS\, a series of short\, radical books from Pluto Press. He teaches at Lakehead University\, where he co-directs the ReImagining Value Action Lab (RiVAL).

Based on research in archives in the US\, the UK\, and Vanuatu\, as well as in FBI files\, Craib explores in careful detail the ideology and practice of libertarian exit and its place in the histories of contemporary cap­italism\, decolonization\, empire\, and oceans and islands. \nRaymond Craib teaches History at Cornell University. His research interests lie at the intersection of geography\, politics\, and everyday practice. His other works include The Cry of the Renegade: Politics and Poetry in Interwar Chile; Cartographic Mexico: A History of State Fixations and Fugitive Landscapes; and\, with Barry Maxwell\, No Gods No Masters No Peripheries: Global Anarchisms.

SUMMARY:State Forms and Forming States: A 2-day presentation
DESCRIPTION:Two afternoons with The Yale Working Group on Globalization and Culture\nIn a two-part presentation\, the Yale Working Group on Globalization and Culture will share our collective research on states: states of governmentality\, states of matter\, states of being. States move through us\, states congeal borders\, states govern\, states violate\, states intervene\, states organize abandonment\, states let die. States also signal a condition of being–states of emergency\, states of grace\, states of matter\, statelessness. What a sorry state you’re in! There are corrupt states\, failed states\, and disordered states of the economy. In many “state” formations\, stability is revered. We challenge its troubling promise to bind places and peoples together\, to curate state feelings\, while attending to the ways in which groups gather to diffuse and refuse boundaries in altered states. Together\, our panels suggest that when states transform\, perhaps it is a revolution or perhaps–it is alchemy. \nThe project is divided into two halves: \nFirst part: STATE CURATORS\nSaturday\, May 21\, 4 to 6 pm US and Canada EDT / 8 to 10 pm GMT\n“State Curators\,” takes up histories of sovereignty and governmentality\, and the relationship between knowledge\, culture\, and the state. Moving across the Mexico-Texas border\, colonial India and Reconstruction America\, Harlem and postcolonial Algeria and Cuba\, it looks at state-associated actors from social scientists to missionaries to poets. \nSecond part: FLUID STATES\nSunday\, May 22\, 4 to 6 pm US and Canada EDT / 8 to 10 pm GMT\n“Fluid States\,” considers the inherent instabilities of sovereign states and states of matter\, lingering on contemporary texts and objects that are in fluid states\, with fuzzy borders and internal incoherence–at times evading capture and at others\, facilitating capitalist exchange. \n  \nTHE YALE WORKING GROUP ON GLOBALIZATION AND CULTURE http://wggc.yale.edu/ is an interdisciplinary cultural studies laboratory that has been practicing collective research at Yale University since 2003. Over the years\, we have presented  work at numerous cultural studies conferences as well at the Marxist Education Project\, the Left Forum\, Occupy Boston\, and the World Social Forum. SUMMARY:State Forms and Forming States: A 2-day presentation
DESCRIPTION:Two afternoons with The Yale Working Group on Globalization and Culture\nIn a two-part presentation\, the Yale Working Group on Globalization and Culture will share our collective research on states: states of governmentality\, states of matter\, states of being. States move through us\, states congeal borders\, states govern\, states violate\, states intervene\, states organize abandonment\, states let die. States also signal a condition of being–states of emergency\, states of grace\, states of matter\, statelessness. What a sorry state you’re in! There are corrupt states\, failed states\, and disordered states of the economy. In many “state” formations\, stability is revered. We challenge its troubling promise to bind places and peoples together\, to curate state feelings\, while attending to the ways in which groups gather to diffuse and refuse boundaries in altered states. Together\, our panels suggest that when states transform\, perhaps it is a revolution or perhaps–it is alchemy. \nThe project is divided into two halves: \nFirst part: STATE CURATORS\nSaturday\, May 21\, 4 to 6 pm US and Canada EDT / 8 to 10 pm GMT\n“State Curators\,” takes up histories of sovereignty and governmentality\, and the relationship between knowledge\, culture\, and the state. Moving across the Mexico-Texas border\, colonial India and Reconstruction America\, Harlem and postcolonial Algeria and Cuba\, it looks at state-associated actors from social scientists to missionaries to poets. \nSecond part: FLUID STATES\nSunday\, May 22\, 4 to 6 pm US and Canada EDT / 8 to 10 pm GMT\n“Fluid States\,” considers the inherent instabilities of sovereign states and states of matter\, lingering on contemporary texts and objects that are in fluid states\, with fuzzy borders and internal incoherence–at times evading capture and at others\, facilitating capitalist exchange. \n  \nTHE YALE WORKING GROUP ON GLOBALIZATION AND CULTURE http://wggc.yale.edu/ is an interdisciplinary cultural studies laboratory that has been practicing collective research at Yale University since 2003. Peter Gelderloos argues that international governmental responses to the climate emergency are structurally incapable of solving the crisis. But there are possibilities. \n \nAcross the world\, grassroots networks of local communities are working to realize their visions of an alternative revolutionary response to planetary destruction\, often pitted against the new megaprojects promoted by greenwashed alternative energy infrastructures and the neocolonialist\, technocratic policies that are the forerunners of the Green New Deal. \nGelderloos interviews food sovereignty activists in Venezuela\, Indigenous communities reforesting their lands in Brazil and anarchists fighting biofuel plantations in Indonesia\, looking at the battles that have cancelled airports\, stopped pipelines\, and helped the most marginalized to fight borders and environmental racism\, to transform their cities\, to win a dignified survival. \nAll author royalties and proceeds from this event will go to the Indigenous reforesting initiatives in Brazil and anarchists fighting biofuels in Indonesia. \nPETER GELDERLOOS is a writer and movement participant. DESCRIPTION:Hygienic Enclosure and the Waste Commons\nPresentation and discussion with author Patrick O’Hare\nRubbish. Waste. Trash. Whatever term you choose to describe the things we throw away\, the connotations are the same; of something dirty\, useless and incontrovertibly ‘bad’. But does such a dismissive rendering mask a more nuanced reality? \nIn Rubbish Belongs to the Poor\, Patrick O’Hare journeys to the heart of Uruguay’s waste disposal system in order to reconceptualize rubbish as a 21st century commons\, at risk of enclosure. On a giant landfill site outside the capital Montevideo we meet the book’s central protagonists\, the ‘classifiers’: waste-pickers who recover and recycle materials in and around its fenced but porous perimeter. Here the struggle of classifiers against the enclosure of the landfill\, justified on the grounds of hygiene\, is brought into dialogue with other historical and contemporary enclosures – from urban privatizations to rural evictions — to shed light on the nature of contemporary forms of capitalist dispossession. \nSupplementing this rich ethnography with the author’s own insights from dumpster diving in the UK\, the book analyzes capitalism’s relations with its material surpluses and what these tell us about its expansionary logics\, limits and liminal spaces. Rubbish Belongs to the Poor ultimately proposes a fundamental rethinking of the links between waste\, capitalism and dignified work. \nPatrick O’Hare is a social anthropologist and activist. SUMMARY:States and Social Revolutions: A Comparative Analysis of France\, Russia and China
DESCRIPTION:An ongoing free offering \nA close reading of Theda Skocpol’s States and Social Revolutions\nConvened with Sam Salour\nStates and Social Revolutions: A Comparative Analysis of France\, Russia and China is a 1979 book by political scientist and sociologist Theda Skocpol\, published by Cambridge University Press\, which explains the causes of social revolutions. In the book\, Skocpol performs a comparative historical analysis of the French Revolution of 1789 through the early 19th century\, the Russian Revolution of 1917 through the 1930s and the Chinese Revolution of 1911 through the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s. Skocpol argues that social revolutions occurred in these states because of the simultaneous occurrence of state breakdown and peasant revolution at the same time. \nSkocpol asserts that social revolutions are rapid and basic transformations of a society’s state and class structures. She distinguishes this from mere rebellions\, which involve a revolt of subordinate classes but may not create structural change\, and from political revolutions that may change state structures but not social structures. What is unique about social revolutions\, she argues\, is that basic changes in social structure and political structure occur in a mutually reinforcing fashion and these changes occur through intense sociopolitical conflict. A convergence of peasant rebellion on one hand and international pressures causing state breakdown on the other hand cause revolutionary social movements. \nThe book was highly influential in the study of revolutions\, and has been credited with ushering in a new paradigm. DESCRIPTION:Governing Surplus and Survival in Global Capitalism\nwith author Susanne Soederberg\n \nIn the 1870s\, Friedrich Engels published a series of articles on “The Housing Question\,” wherein he argued that decent\, secure housing for the working class is incompatible with the commodity nature of urban property and human labor power in the capitalist system\, as the movements of capital inevitably will undermine all piecemeal reforms. Soederberg pushes beyond dominant debates by treating low-rent housing as a unique commodity that provides a necessary place for the societal reproduction of labor power while being integrated into the global dynamics of capitalism. She argues that historical and geographical configurations of monetized governance\, including landlords\, employers and inter-scalar state practices\, have served to reproduce urban displacements and obfuscate their gendered\, class and racialized underpinnings. SUMMARY:Marx’s Inquiry into the Birth of Capitalism: Why Does It Matter?

They need to be transformed into capital.”    —Karl Marx\, Capital\, A Critique of Political Economy\, Volume 1\, Chapter 26\nSince Adam Smith\, political economists\, historians and other social scientists have offered various explanations about the beginnings of capitalism as a mode of production. Their different conclusions imply very different ideas about what capitalism is. In The Origins of Capitalism as a Social System (Routledge paperback\, 2019)\, author John Milios delves deeply into the historical circumstances that turned money and commodities into capital on a systemic scale. In doing so\, he develops theoretical insights into the nature of capitalism as a system of class domination that has swept away all previously existing social relations throughout the world. \nAs Marx argues\, “original accumulation” of capital\, the transformation of pre-capitalist to capitalist social relations\, is not explained by the fairy tale of wise and thrifty household producers getting wealthy by their own labor. John Milios’ research into the “pre-capitalist money owner”\, the role of commodity production (as opposed to production for direct consumption) based on slave labor in the ancient world\, and the development of ”contractual money begetting” production in Europe in the middle ages\, helps us understand what is and is not capitalism. He critically analyzes both Marxist and non-Marxist literature. He uses the rise and fall of the Venetian mercantile republic as a case study. He concludes that “No version of capitalism is the realm of … freedom or justice. Capitalism is a social system in which … coercion guaranteeing economic exploitation of the ruled by the rulers is incorporated into the economic relation itself.” \nJOHN MILIOS is Professor of Political Economy and the History of Economic Thought at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA)\, Greece. He has authored more than two hundred papers published or forthcoming in refereed journals (in Greek\, English\, German\, French\, Spanish\, Portuguese\, Italian\, Chinese and Turkish) including the Cambridge Journal of Economics\, History of Political Economy\, History of Economics Review\, Review of Political Economy\, European Journal of the History of Economic Thought\, The American Journal of Economics and Sociology\, Science & Society\, Rethinking Marxism\, Review of Radical Political Economics\, and has participated as invited speaker in numerous international conferences. He has also authored or co-authored some eighteen scholarly books. His most recent books in English are A Political Economy of Contemporary Capitalism and Its Crisis: Demystifying Finance (Routledge 2013\, Paperback Edition 2014\, co-authored with D. P. Sotiropoulos and S. Lapatsioras) and The Origins of Capitalism as a Social System: The Prevalence of an Aleatory Encounter (Routledge 2018). He is director of the quarterly journal of economic theory Thesseis (published since 1982 in Greek) and serves on the editorial boards of four scholarly journals.
