SUMMARY:The Works of Henri Lefebvre: Four Lectures
DESCRIPTION:We introduce the work of French Marxist theorist Henri Lefebvre through four monthly lectures presented by cultural studies scholar Iván Zatz-Díaz. \nLecture 1—October 11\nMetaphilosophy: This introduction to Lefebvre’s work presents a framework to situate the overarching purpose of his thought as a form of political activism. Metaphilosophy sets an intent to move the act of thinking beyond itself and towards the living world\, beyond formal philosophy and sociology and towards the transformative. A brief look at Lefebvre’s work on Modernism\, Hegel\, Marx\, and Nietzsche will provide further context. \nLecture 2—November 15\nCritique of Everyday Life is Lefebvre’s overarching project from the immediate aftermath of WWII until his death in 1990. Volume 1 (1947) looks at Marx’s concept of alienation as a central explanation of life under capitalism. Volume 2 (1961) aims to set the path for a sociological analysis of late capitalist alienation. A brief account of his analysis of the French events of May-June 1968 will complete the presentation of this initial phase of the Critique. \nLecture 3—December 6\nThe Production of Space is Lefebvre’s best-known work in English and the reason he is often viewed reductively as an urban studies theorist\, especially in the United States. This presentation will approach the book rather as metaphilosophy\, highlighting its politically transformative intent. We will also address other Lefebvre writings on cities as an integral part of his look at everyday life. \nLecture 4—January 10\nCritique vol. 3 and Rhythmanalysis: In the last decade of his life\, Lefebvre returned to the Critique of Everyday Life in order to confront the imbrication of new technologies with the alienated life of latter-day capitalism. Rhythmanalysis\, his final work\, incorporates time into the analysis of everyday life\, particularly in the form of street rhythms seen from his window or observed in the spaces of Mediterranean cities. \nIván Zatz-Díaz is a retired Professor of Cultural Studies at Pratt Institute in New York City. He has been a resident of three cities: Mexico City (by birth and upbringing)\, New York City (for much more than half his life)\, and Madrid (for the past two years and counting).

SUMMARY:Hegel for Radicals: On Art and Literature
DESCRIPTION:The End of History is here! So proclaimed Francis Fukuyama in the 1990’s\, following the disintegration of the Soviet Union. In the 1960’s the philosopher and art critic Arthur C. Danto proclaimed The End of Art\, noting the ascendancy of Andy Warhol’s pop art. The idea can also be traced back to the early years of the 20th century with Marcel Duchamp\, Dadaism\, and Cubism.  \nThe genesis of both concepts\, The End of History and the End of Art are credited to Hegel.  \nThe MEP’s recurring series Hegel for Radicals resumes with a seminar on Hegel’s Lectures on Aesthetics where we will study his understanding of art and literature. We will read the Introduction and several selected sections from the body of the lectures. As in virtually every area which he investigated\, Hegel brought about a revolution in the way we think of art and literature. He anticipated the development of modernism before it arrived\, as well as the enigmas raised by postmodernism. Agree with Hegel or not\, it is no exaggeration to say that all contemporary discourse about art and literature takes his work as its point of departure.  \nThis class series begins on October 31 and will introduce what is living in Hegel for those who want to change the world. Our goal is to make Hegel’s dialectic less mysterious as we go along and try to tease out the revolutionary implications in his thought and its significance for our time. Previous classes in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit\, The Science of Logic and/or The Philosophy of Right will be helpful but are not a requirement for this class. Every participant in the class will be expected to make at least one presentation during the semester. \nAlex Steinberg is the facilitator of Hegel for Radicals. He is an independent scholar who has taught and published on topics such as the philosophy of Heidegger and Nazism\, Marxism and humanism\, Hegel’s philosophy of history and Hegel’s Phenomenology at various alternative educational institutions. Alex has also been involved with the governance of WBAI radio in New York and its parent organization\, Pacifica\, most recently as the Chair of the Pacifica National Board from 2020-2022.
