SUMMARY:A Prime Competitor: Understanding Amazon’s Market Power
DESCRIPTION:A recording of this November 20\, 2024\, event is available on our YouTube channel. \nStephen Maher and Scott Aquanno present an innovative analysis of Amazon’s market power\, drawing on major themes from Marx’s Capital\, volume 2. In a recent report prepared for Amazon Worker Solidarity\, they challenge understandings of “monopoly” common in mainstream economics as well as among sections of the left. \nAmazon’s “bigness” and lack of a direct competitor would seem to suggest that it should be considered a monopoly. And yet\, far from exhibiting the tell-tale signs of increasing monopoly prices\, inefficiency\, and technological stagnation\, Amazon has engaged in cutthroat price competition\, built a highly efficient and technologically advanced logistics system\, and unleashed competitive forces whose effects have reverberated across the retail sector and beyond. Moreover\, Amazon’s distinct vertically integrated structure\, competing across a range of sectors including retail\, e-commerce\, logistics\, online search engines\, and media entertainment – each dominated by large firms – suggests that today’s giant corporations are not significantly encumbered by barriers to entry. \nStephen Maher is Assistant Professor of Economics at SUNY Cortland\, and Co-Editor of the Socialist Register. With Scott Aquanno he co-authored The Fall and Rise of American Finance: From J.P. Morgan to Blackrock (Verso\, 2024). Steve is also the author of Corporate Capitalism and the Integral State: General Electric and a Century of American Power (Palgrave\, 2022). \nScott Aquanno is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Ontario Tech University\, and a Visiting Associate at the Global Labour Research Centre at York University. Since the recent financial crises\, the expression “liberal reform” has come to evoke austerity and economic malaise\, especially for the working classes and a segment of the middle class. Conte’s historical research demonstrates that the chief purpose of such reforms has been to integrate semi-peripheral states into the capitalist world-economy. Rules\, institutions\, attitudes\, and procedures are imposed in accord with the economic and political interests of capitalist élites and hegemonic states – first by Britain\, then by the United States. In all situations\, the velvet glove barely conceals the armored fist. The goals and methods – more or less the same today as 300 years ago – promote the ongoing dissolution of traditional societies in the peripheries of the contemporary world. \n“A fascinating account of state debt as a mechanism in international relations forcing liberal reforms on the capitalist periphery\, doing away with ways of social life in conflict with the requirements of modern capital formation. SUMMARY:David McNally: Marx and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:A recording of this May 18\, 2024\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nWe marked the tenth anniversary of the Marxist Education Project with this keynote talk by David McNally on Marx and colonialism. The concluding chapter of Capital volume 1 tackles “the modern theory of colonization\,” yet Marx only half-delivers on the promise implied. Rather than present a full-fledged account of capitalist colonialism\, he pivots back to Europe and the processes of primitive accumulation. McNally fills in crucial gaps in Marx’s text\, suggesting directions in which he might have gone in analyzing colonial relations and the globalization of capitalism outside of Europe – centering bondage\, slavery\, colonialism\, and racism as foundational elements of global capitalism. \nDavid McNally is a good friend of the Marxist Education Project. Our most successful reading groups in the past 10 years featured his book Blood and Money: War\, Slavery\, Finance and Empire\, and we have also studied his Global Slump: The Economics and Politics of Crisis and Resistance. David is the Cullen Distinguished Professor of History and Business at the University of Houston (UH) and Director of the Center for the Study of Capitalism. Earlier he taught political economy at York University Toronto for over thirty years. David is the editor-in-chief of Spectre\, a biannual and online journal of Marxist theory\, strategy\, and analysis.

SUMMARY:Trotsky in New York Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Socialists and Immigrants in the Lower East Side\nJoin Alex Steinberg for a historical walking tour of Lower Manhattan as we explore some of the places where Leon Trotsky visited and worked during his nine week stay in New York in early 1917. \nWe will explore the culture of the radicalized immigrant communities of Yiddish-speaking Jews from Eastern Europe as well as German\, Russian\, Italian and Greek immigrants. These communities supported a thriving socialist movement in New York.  And in 1917\, ferment and struggle increased dramatically as America entered World War I on April 6\, 1917 and Russia’s revolutionary wave exploded a few months later. \nAfter beginning at Cooper Union\, we will walk to 77 St. Marks Place\, which housed the offices of the Russian language newspaper Novy Mir and where Trotsky and other future Bolshevik leaders worked daily. From there\, the tour will walk to the building of the Jewish Daily Forward in Seward Park\, where we will learn of Trotsky’s dramatic confrontation with more conservative socialists. As we walk we will pass by a number of places that were important in understanding the history of the social struggles of immigrants in a New York very different than the city we know today. \nLed by Alex Steinberg who has taught a number of classes with the Marxist Education Project. \nMeet in front the main entrance of The Great Hall of Cooper Union\, behind the statue of Peter Cooper\, East 7th Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues. \n

Dinesh Joseph Wadiwel and Alex Blanchette bring to the Marxist Education Project an ongoing conversation they have been conducting this spring as Visiting Fellows at the Harvard Law School’s Animal Law & Policy Program. Wadiwel is the author of Animals and Capital and Blanchette is the author of Porkopolis: American Animality\, Standardized Life\, and the Factory Farm. Both books have recently been featured in MEP reading groups. \nDinesh Wadiwel is Associate Professor in Human Rights and Socio-Legal Studies at The University of Sydney. He has been active in anti-poverty and disability rights movements. Previous books include The War against Animals and\, as co-editor\, Foucault and Animals (Brill\, 2016). \nAlex Blanchette is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Environmental Studies at Tufts University. He also co-edited How Nature Works: Rethinking Labor on a Troubled Planet\, which analyzes how non-human beings are enlisted into capitalist work regimens. His current research addresses the politics of quitting meatpacking\, based on ethnographic interviews with ex-workers from across the United States. \n

DESCRIPTION:A video of this March 3\, 2024\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nA talk and conversation with Alberto Toscano about his powerful new book Late Fascism: Race\, Capitalism and the Politics of Crisis. Toscano asks\, how should we name\, map and respond to the present state of affairs where the forces of authoritarianism and reaction seem to have the upper hand? Drawing especially on Black radical and anticolonial theories of fascism\, the book makes clear the limits of associating fascism primarily with the kinds of political violence experienced in past European regimes. Toscano argues we should see fascism as a changing process\, a threat anchored in racial and colonial capitalism\, which continues to evolve in the present day. In the words of Robin D.G. Kelley\, “Late Fascism is brilliant\, incisive\, and right on time.” The book is available from Verso. \nAlberto Toscano teaches at Simon Fraser University and at Goldsmiths\, University of London. DESCRIPTION:A video of this February 24\, 2024\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \n“All history is the history of cat struggle.” In Marx for Cats: A Radical Bestiary\, our guest speaker Leigh Claire La Berge follows feline footprints through Western economic history to reveal an animality at the heart of Marxism. She draws on a twelve-hundred-year arc spanning capitalism’s feudal prehistory\, its colonialist and imperialist ages\, the bourgeois revolutions that supported capitalism\, and the communist revolutions that opposed it. Attending to myriad archival appearance of lions\, tigers\, wildcats\, and other felines\, La Berge argues that these creatures have been central to Marxist understandings of the economy and politics. Asking what humans and animals owe each other in a moment of ecological crisis\, La Berge joins current debates about ecosocialism. Pete Dolack’s latest book\, What Do We Need Bosses For?: Toward Economic Democracy\, analyzes past and present efforts to establish systems of economic democracy on a national or society-wide basis. In this context the book dissects the mounting inequalities of capitalism and discusses theoretical ideas as to how we might organize a better world. \nWorking people have repeatedly sought to create such a world. They have organized to reverse their subordinate positions in capitalist production and take charge of their working lives and their workplaces through egalitarian movements. Political democracy is impossible without economic democracy. Economic democracy\, in turn\, is impossible under capitalism. As ever more people realize the present world system offers them nothing but more hardship\, movements to create a better world inevitably will rise again. \nAlternatives discussed in the book include workers’ self-management in Yugoslavia\, workers’ control in Czechoslovakia\, the social-property area of Allende-era Chile\, the democratic confederalism of Rojava\, the cooperatives of Cuba and the communes of Venezuela\, with brief discussions of a few other examples\, including co-management in Tanzania\, Chinese industrial cooperatives and British work-ins. \nIn addition to What Do We Need Bosses For?\, Pete Dolack is also the author of It’s Not Over: Learning From the Socialist Experiment\, a book examining the 20th century’s socialist experiments so we can do it better in the 21st century. He publishes on various websites\, including CounterPunch\, ZNet\, The Ecologist\, Dandelion Salad and his own Systemic Disorder blog. In two linked sessions\, the Yale Working Group on Globalization and Culture presents their collective research on a keyword of contemporary cultural studies – war – and investigates its many valences as lived reality and as metaphor. Trade wars can become militarized\, and hot wars can look cold\, depending on your vantage point. The race war\, Twitter tells us\, is impending; but in an age of US forever war(s)\, understanding war as punctuating the flow of history seems to be entirely insufficient. War is\, some argue\, a way of life\, a structuring condition that shapes our examinations of the history of the present. The war on drugs\, the war on poverty\, the war on COVID\, the war on Christmas – war is also a ubiquitous metaphor\, a self-righteous idiom that announces moral panic and articulates racial logic in otherwise terms. But metaphors of war have also influenced various radical traditions and social movements\, including anti-war activism and Gramsci’s deployment of metaphors of war in his theorizing of hegemony. DESCRIPTION:A video of this April 29\, 2023\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nWith Author Madison Van Oort\nBeneath the success of fast fashion\, a grimmer story is told by Madison Van Oort in Worn Out: How Retailers Surveil and Exploit Workers in the Digital Age and How Workers Are Fighting Back. Going undercover in two of the world’s largest fast fashion stores in New York City\, she observed firsthand how data and surveillance shape the lives of the people who do the actual producing and selling. Van Oort’s interviews with dozens of front line workers and labor activists show how workers are fighting back\, and her research exposes the exploitative reality of retail labor as digital tools lubricate the shift toward just-in-time retail by collecting real-time data on not only customer behavior but also worker performance. Automated scheduling platforms\, biometric time clocks\, and cashier metrics increase these workers’ already heightened insecurity. One of the first ethnographies of this “thriving” industry\, Worn Out pulls open the curtain between production and consumption and reveals the real cost of fast fashion. \nMadison Van Oort is a researcher based in Minneapolis. She received her PhD from the University of Minnesota in 2018\, and her academic writing has appeared in the journals Critical Sociology\, Ethnography\, and Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society as well as the anthology Captivating Technology: Race\, Carceral Technoscience\, and Liberatory Imagination in Everyday Life. SUMMARY:The New Power Elite: C. Wright Mills Revisited
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS POSTPONED – new date to be announced\nIn 1956\, sociologist C. Wright Mills published The Power Elite\, a study that challenged conventional postwar assumptions that the United States was a society of democracy and upward mobility. Mills analyzed how power and social status in the 1950s had become concentrated in an immense corporate-government power complex that overrode the country’s apparently democratic and egalitarian institutions. Mills feared that\, if not constrained\, concentration and centralization of power at the top of modern society would result in a revival of the violent capitalist authoritarianism or fascism that marked the 1920s and 30s. The Power Elite had a profound influence on the rise of the New Left and contributed to the revival of Marxism in the 1960s (although Mills himself was not a Marxist). \nIn The New Power Elite\, Heather Gautney offers us a contemporary companion to Mills’s work through a fresh critique for the new millennium. She takes up the problems that Mills addressed and echoes his outrage over the injustices and ruin brought by today’s elites. She grounds her analysis more in political economy than in institutional authority as Mills did. Gautney also accounts for changes in global capitalism over the last forty years\, arguing that neoliberalism and the centering of the market in political and social life has ushered in ever more extreme forms of violence and exploitation and a drift toward authoritarianism. \nHeather Gautney\, Associate Professor of Sociology at Fordham University\, has authored numerous books and articles on social inequality\, U.S. politics\, labor\, and social movements\, and opinion essays for major news outlets. Her compelling account “makes a complicated event understandable and vivid. Eichner’s rich portraits bring to life the freedom and empowerment the Communards experienced\, juxtaposed with the bloody repression of its final days.” (Sarah Fishman\, author of From Vichy to the Sexual Revolution: Gender and Family Life in Postwar France) \nAt dawn on March 18\, 1871\, Parisian women stepped between cannons and French soldiers\, using their bodies to block the army from taking the artillery from their working-class neighborhood. When ordered to fire\, the troops refused and instead turned and arrested their leaders. Thus began the Paris Commune\, a 72-day conflict that ended with the ferocious slaughter of communards by French troops. The Commune stands as a critical and pivotal moment in nineteenth-century history\, as the linchpin between revolutionary pasts and futures\, and as a crucible allowing glimpses of alternate possibilities. Upending hierarchies of class\, religion\, and gender\, the Commune emerged as a touchstone for the subsequent century-and-a-half of revolutionary and radical social movements. \nCarolyn J. Eichner teaches in the Departments of History and Women’s & Gender Studies at the University of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee. Her books include Surmounting the Barricades: Women in the Paris Commune and Feminism’s Empire. \nMitch Abidor is the editor and translator of Voices of the Paris Commune and Communards. But this capitalist “utopia” sits uneasily with both traditional Chinese values and the socialism that has been the foundation of the People’s Republic since the Chinese Communist Party came to power in 1949. Utopia and Modernity in China\, edited by David Margolies and Qing Cao\, examines the contradictions inherent in China’s attempt to achieve “socialism with Chinese characteristics” by promoting home-grown capitalism. The book attempts to deconstruct the realities of this system in practice\, focusing on the internal tensions between traditional Chinese values\, neoliberal capitalism\, and the CCP’s vision of a transition to socialism in the 21st century. Women and Quechua and Aymara people from the Andean countryside and interior cities are taking a leading role in demanding that Boluarte and the Congress resign and that a democratic constituent assembly be convened to enable a government that represents Peru’s diversity rather than the exploitative\, racist elites of Lima. Join us as Peruvian left activist and sociologist Nicolás Lynch reports on and analyzes these dramatic events direct from Lima. Historian Gerardo Rénique moderates and joins the conversation. \nNicolás Lynch has published many books and essays on Peruvian politics and history. He has taught at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima and has served as Peru’s Minister of Education and as Ambassador to Argentina. Lynch holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the New School for Social Research. \nGerardo Rénique taught Latin American history for many years at the City College of New York.
