DESCRIPTION:Convened with Fred Murphy\, Gerardo Rénique and Gunnett Kaaf\nA reading group to celebrate and reflect on two classic works of anti-imperialist writing first published fifty years ago but with an ongoing worldwide impact: Eduardo Galeano’s Open Veins of Latin America (1971) and Walter Rodney’s How Europe Underdeveloped Africa (1972). Extending our scope to Asia and bringing matters up to the present day\, we will conclude by reading Amitav Ghosh’s just-published The Nutmeg’s Curse: Parables for a Planet in Crisis. These discussions will be led by Gerardo Rénique and Fred Murphy\, joined by Gunnett Kaaf for the Africa sessions and consideration of Walter Rodney’s study. \nGerardo Rénique taught history for many years at the City College of New York. He is a frequent contributor to Socialism and Democracy and NACLA: Report on the Americas. His research interests include the political traditions of popular movements in Latin America\, and race\, national identity and state formation in Mexico. \nFred Murphy has led numerous study groups on Latin America\, ecosocialism\, and related topics at the Marxist Education Project since 2015. He studied and taught Latin American history at the New School for Social Research. Regime change\, economic disaster and Erdogan’s ambition to impose ‘one-man rule’ have shaken the foundations of Turkish political life. This presentation will look at the historical and current outcomes brough about by the authoritarian\, militarized civil life for Turkish workers. What will be the long term consequences for workers in Turkey? \nMoving beyond the headlines and personalities\, this book uncovers the real condition of the working class in modern Turkey. Thanks to Darko Suvin\, poet and revolutionary intellectual\, Brecht’s unpublished work has been translated into English and is here\, ready to be appropriated by us of the 21st century. The Marxist Education Project is proud to present a reading and discussion of Brecht’s work and its meaning for us at a time when all of humanity\, our earth\, and all life as we know it is threatened by the moribund laws of self-seeking capitalist private property. Brecht premises his poem on the practical reality\, only fully in place after WWII\, of a globalized capitalized world. Marx understood that capitalist relations would globalize our societies and earth and saw this taking place\, but during his lifetime this had not yet been fully achieved. Now\, having occupied our earth\, today\, the Bezos and company are exploring the possibilities of extending their private interests into our universe all for their personal aggrandizement and under the dictates of money making more money\, accumulation for the sake of accumulation. Our guest speakers and discussants will explore the relations of poetry\, the meaning of utopia and anti-utopia\, and doctrine as we re-envision the emancipatory project and the necessity of self-consciously identifying the difficult tasks of transitioning specific to our particular country’s development while always in relation to and for the mutual development of each and all. Interestingly\, Brecht closes his Manifesto replying to Marx and Engels closing line in their Manifesto\, “The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win\,” by answering\, “How may the workers break their own class chains? Only by breaking everybody’s chains.” Marx once said that there are historical moments when the working class must gain class-consciousness and become historical subjects. DESCRIPTION:“Forces of production and social relations – two different sides of the development of the social individual – appear to capital as mere means\, and are merely means for it to produce on its limited foundation. In fact\, however\, they are the material conditions to blow this foundation sky-high…” —Karl Marx\, The Grundrisse  \nPerhaps the most curious and least understood aspect of Marx’s work is his method of analysis. Marx viewed all his economic laws as tendencies and it is hard to deny that those tendencies are becoming more and more the realities of today’s capitalism. However\, to understand our society we need to do more than reading and accepting his concepts\, we must critically analyze them and look for the way of thinking that produced them. It is with this goal in my mind that we should embark on a journey through the long and complex sentences of the Grundrisse. This work is perhaps the best representation of the process of thinking that found its culmination in Capital and we will be engaging with it during our study. Without a doubt\, this will be a long and arduous process but we should always keep in mind that “there is no royal road to science and only those who do not dread the fatiguing climb of its steep paths have a chance of gaining its luminous summits. Continuing on November 6\,  we will read from “The Chapter on Money” utilizing the Penguin edition of Marx’s Grundrisse. Recordings of prior sessions are available to all who would like to review. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Capital\, Volume II: The Process of Circulation of Capital
DESCRIPTION:with Mary Boger\nVolume I of Capital is just the beginning of unraveling the underlying laws of capitalist development. In Volume I Marx demystifies “the commodity” by identifying the real sources of the production of wealth\, namely\, the human subject through our labor and nature. Capital subsumes these as commodities which are consumed within the process of production. After solving the form that the production of wealth takes within a society where generalized commodity production prevails under the domination of capital\, Marx takes on the next big question. How the hell can reproduction of society as a whole take place when there is no conscious social planning that ensures that all needs are met and in the necessary proportions such that a continuous reproduction of the conditions of life can take place and reproduce the capitalist relations of production? In Volume II\, The Process of Circulation of Capital\, we discover the solution to this problem while new internal contradictions and instabilities at a societal level inherent to this mode of production are explained. The ground is then laid in combining the laws of motion peculiar to capitalism uncovered in the first two Volumes—The Process of Capitalist Production and The Process of the Circulation of Capital—to the analysis of the third Volume\, The Process of Capitalist Production as a Whole. \n \nWe will begin our study of Volume II study by situating this volume in relation to the historical process of development of capitalist society which is premised on its specific social form of societal re-production\, the production of capital. To do so we will study the closing sections of the Penguin edition of Volume I\, specifically\, Part VIII: “So-called Primitive Accumulation” and the “Appendix: Results of the Immediate Process of Production”. \nJoin us as we journey through this movement from the imaginary concrete to the abstract concrete to the real concrete. Come and challenge your way of thinking and understanding the world as it appears to you and begin to identify some of what needs to be overcome and done to bring about a better world. \nMARY BOGER\, an ethnographic researcher\, has been teaching Capital since the first School for Marxist Education opened in 1975. DESCRIPTION:Governing Surplus and Survival in Global Capitalism\nwith author Susanne Soederberg\n \nIn the 1870s\, Friedrich Engels published a series of articles on “The Housing Question\,” wherein he argued that decent\, secure housing for the working class is incompatible with the commodity nature of urban property and human labor power in the capitalist system\, as the movements of capital inevitably will undermine all piecemeal reforms. Soederberg pushes beyond dominant debates by treating low-rent housing as a unique commodity that provides a necessary place for the societal reproduction of labor power while being integrated into the global dynamics of capitalism. She argues that historical and geographical configurations of monetized governance\, including landlords\, employers and inter-scalar state practices\, have served to reproduce urban displacements and obfuscate their gendered\, class and racialized underpinnings. SUMMARY:Political Economy of Labor Repression in the United States
DESCRIPTION:with author Andrew Kolin\nAndrew Kolin presents a detailed explanation of the essential elements that characterize capital’s relations to the working class and how capital relies on various forms of repressing reform and revolutionary movements by workers. The repression is directly linked to the class struggle between capital and labor. The starting point examines labor repression after the American Revolution. Andrew’s book then follows the role of the state along with the explosive growth of American capitalism to analyze the long history of capital and labor conflict with details of the US state being aligned with the interests of capital throughout American history. \nWholesale exclusion of labor from a fundamental role in framing policy in these institutions was crucial in understanding the unfolding of labor repression. Repression emerges amid a social struggle to acquire and maintain control over policy-making bodies\, which pits the few against the many. In response\, labor attempts to push back against institutional exclusion in part by the formation of labor unions. Capital reacts to such actions using repression to prevent labor from having a greater role in social institutions. For instance\, this is played out inside the workplace as capital and labor engage in a political struggle over the function of the workplace. These workers’ inquiries\, from call center workers to platform\, trucking\, cleaning\, logistics\, mining\, auto factories\, teachers\, and adjunct professors\, are re-energizing unions\, bypassing unions altogether or innovating new forms of workers’ organizations. \nIn one of the first major studies to critically assess this new cycle of global working class struggle\, Robert Ovetz collects together case studies from over a dozen contributors\, looking at workers’ movements in China\, Mexico\, the US\, South Africa\, Turkey\, Argentina\, Italy\, India and the UK. The book reveals how these new forms of struggle are no longer limited to single sectors of the economy or contained by state borders\, but are circulating internationally and disrupting the global capitalist system as they do. \nROBERT OVETZ is a Lecturer in Political Science at San Jose State University in California.
