SUMMARY:Planetary Crises: 'Anthropocene Communism'
DESCRIPTION:Next monthly session September 16\nThe MEP’s Ecosocialist Study Group meets monthly to discuss important new works on the science and politics of the climate emergency\, the nature of economic and ecological crises\, and related topics. On September 16 we will consider Anthropocene Communism: Land and Capital in the Age of Disaster\, by Paul Guillibert. \nIn Anthropocene Communism\, the philosopher and activist Paul Guillibert proposes a new communism to move us beyond the ecological crisis of late capitalism. In a highly original reading of Karl Marx’s exchanges with Russian populists\, and informed by the cultural studies of Raymond Williams\, the José Carlos Mariátegui\, and Ernst Bloch\, Guillibert develops a philosophical naturalism that rethinks our relations with the environment. For Guillibert\, if we are to move beyond the Anthropocene\, we must develop new strategies. Communism must become environmentalism\, and political ecology can only become truly revolutionary once it is communist. \nOther recent books of interest to this group are listed here. \nFacilitated by Fred Murphy. Since 2015 Fred has led numerous MEP study groups on ecosocialism\, science and technology\, political economy\, the history of capitalism\, and Latin American politics. He studied and taught historical sociology at the New School for Social Research and reported from Latin America for several socialist publications.

SUMMARY:Marx's Capital\, Volume I - A Short Course on Capitalist Production
DESCRIPTION:A 12-session study group\, September 19 through December 5 \n\nHave you always wanted to study Marx’s Capital\, Volume 1\, but hesitated because of the time commitment to read the entire volume from start to finish? Join us for a 12-session study group covering key sections of the book. \nExperienced Capital study leader Lisa Maya Knauer facilitates as we explore the relevance of Marx’s analysis to our current context. While we will go over the assigned material each week\, participants will read the material on their own in advance. This study group is open to both Capital newbies and those who have read it previously but want a refresher. Lisa will be using the new Reitter-North translation of Capital\, but participants are welcome to use any available edition.  \n\nLisa Maya Knauer has been involved with Marxist education in New York for her entire adult life\, and has taught a variety of classes at the MEP and its predecessors. Her current activist work focuses on immigrant workers’ rights and indigenous struggles for land and water. In her day job\, she is a tenured radical at a public university.

SUMMARY:Refusal of Work: The Writings of Harry Cleaver
DESCRIPTION:Refuse work. Revolt against capitalism. Read Harry Cleaver. In that order. Repeat. \nJoin editors Robert Ovetz and Kevin Van Meter for a discussion of Points of Departure: Refusal of Work and the Crisis of Capitalism: The Collected Writings of Harry Cleaver\, a definitive collection of Harry Cleaver’s best unpublished\, translated\, or lesser known writings – both historical and current – on the refusal of work\, class composition\, and the “inversion of the class perspective.” The book puts essential theoretical weapons into the hands of a new generation of militant workers and organizers re-energizing the class struggle. In these essays\, Cleaver rereads Marx to advance our collective search for points of departure from capitalism\, so we can end it before it ends us. \nRobert Ovetz holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Texas–Austin and is a senior lecturer in Political Science at San José State University\, where his work focuses on academic labor organizing and the labor movement. He is the author of When Workers Shot Back\, We the Elites\, and the forthcoming Rebels for the System. He writes on labor for Dollars & Sense and other publications. \nKevin Van Meter holds a PhD in Geography\, Environment and Society from the University of Minnesota\, serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Labor and Society\, and is a union organizer and labor educator who writes on contemporary labor issues\, labor history\, and working-class self-organization. He is author of Guerrillas of Desire and the forthcoming Reading Struggles: Working-Class Self-Activity from Detroit to Turin and Back Again. His work has appeared in New Politics\, Notes from Below\, Dollars & Sense\, and other publications.

SUMMARY:Mikhail Baitalsky's 'Notebooks for the Grandchildren'
DESCRIPTION:Translator Marilyn Vogt-Downey presents a poignant memoir by Mikhail Baitalsky\, a Ukrainian survivor of the 1930s purges in Soviet Union. Notebooks for the Grandchildren: Recollections of a Supporter of the Marxist Opposition to Stalin Who Survived the Stalin Terror is an indispensable resource for anyone seeking to understand what went wrong after the great Russian Revolution of 1917. Through the eyes of young Ukrainians like himself\, who came of age fighting for the Revolution but were murdered in the late 1930s\, Baitalsky recounts the Revolution’s hopes—and its tragic unraveling under Stalin. He narrates how Stalin rose to power and carried out the “political counterrevolution” that silenced so many. Arrested three times by the Stalin regime\, Baitalsky survived to tell this story. \nMarilyn Vogt-Downey translated for the Writings of Leon Trotsky series (1970s) for Pathfinder Press and Samizdat: Voices of the Soviet Opposition (1974) and was a contributor to the Bulletin in Defense of Marxism (1990s) as well as to Truthout and Counterpunch. She taught high school economics and foreign policy in NYC for 26 years and is currently a delegate to the United Federation of Teachers Retiree Chapter.
