DESCRIPTION:Join us for a nine-session reading group on David McNally’s recently published Slavery and Capitalism: A New Marxist History. McNally’s book presents a systematic Marxist account of the capitalist character of Atlantic slavery to support the provocative claim that enslaved labor in the plantation system is a form of capitalist commodity production. Weaving together history\, political economy\, and radical abolitionism\, McNally demonstrates that plantation slaves formed a modern working class and highlights the self-activity of enslaved people fighting for their freedom. He reframes their resistance as labor struggles over production and reproduction\, with significant implications for US and Atlantic history and for understanding the roots of racial capitalism. \nFacilitated by Fred Murphy. Over the past decade\, Fred has led numerous MEP study groups on political economy\, ecosocialism\, science and technology\, and Latin American politics. He studied and taught historical sociology at the New School for Social Research. \nEnrollment for this study group is now closed.

SUMMARY:Imperialism: The Long View and the Big Picture
DESCRIPTION:Video introduction\nImperialism is an economic and political system of war and conquest by great powers\, but it is also the lived experience of the conquered and subjugated. This almost always entails the murder\, rape\, theft\, enslavement\, and myriad humiliations of the dominated and colonized. Empires have committed genocide\, eliminating entire peoples\, and ethnocide\, erasing the nationality\, language\, and culture of the conquered. And the conquered have resisted\, risen up\, rebelled\, and often succeeded at least for a time in escaping the grip of empires. Even so\, new imperial or neocolonial systems often reimpose their domination in new ways\, leading to further resistance and rebellion. \nIn eight weekly sessions guided by Dan La Botz\, we will look at imperialism in the long view\, from the ancient world to today. We will examine the experience of imperialism and the theoretical justifications for it\, as well as anti-imperialist movements and their arguments. We will look at imperialism as economic phenomenon\, as political strategy\, as cultural experience\, and as psychological affect. We will discuss imperialism and gender and imperialism and the environment. \nSee the initial syllabus for further details. \nDan La Botz is a retired historian of the United States and Latin America and a longtime political activist on the left. He holds a Ph.D. in U.S. History from the University of Cincinnati and has taught at several universities\, most recently in the City University of New York School of Labor and Urban Studies. He is the author of a dozen books and scores of journalistic and academic articles on labor movements\, social movements\, and politics in the United States\, Mexico\, Nicaragua\, and Indonesia. He is a co-editor of the journal New Politics.

SUMMARY:The Fallout of War: Metonyms of Militarism
DESCRIPTION:A video of this May 13\, 2023\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nYale Working Group on Globalization and Culture\nSecond of two parts. Part One \nWar: what is it\, and what is it good for? War might seem like a foregone conclusion or a state of exception; in either case it is an archetype of crisis. In two linked sessions\, the Yale Working Group on Globalization and Culture presents their collective research on a keyword of contemporary cultural studies – war – and investigates its many valences as lived reality and as metaphor. Trade wars can become militarized\, and hot wars can look cold\, depending on your vantage point. The race war\, Twitter tells us\, is impending; but in an age of US forever war(s)\, understanding war as punctuating the flow of history seems to be entirely insufficient. War is\, some argue\, a way of life\, a structuring condition that shapes our examinations of the history of the present. The war on drugs\, the war on poverty\, the war on COVID\, the war on Christmas – war is also a ubiquitous metaphor\, a self-righteous idiom that announces moral panic and articulates racial logic in otherwise terms. But metaphors of war have also influenced various radical traditions and social movements\, including anti-war activism and Gramsci’s deployment of metaphors of war in his theorizing of hegemony. Taking account of war as constitutive of the present\, the working group explores war’s meanings as event\, analytic\, and metaphor. \nPanel II Presentations:\nAanchal Saraf theorizes nuclear fallout in the Pacific as war itself moving through the landscapes\, bodies\, and generations of the Marshall Islands and its peoples.\nJavier Porras Madero explores “Dirty Wars” in Latin America for their classed\, raced\, and gendered dimensions as well as their implications for how we may understand conflict\, violence\, and the global Cold War.\nMadeleine Han’s presentation focuses on the Han River both as the face of South Korean postwar economic development (referred to as the “Miracle on the Han”) and as a repository of submerged cold war memories.\nMaru Pabón examines the dominant genres and styles of two poetic projects that emerged out of anticolonial/anti-imperial struggles in Palestine and Cuba\, shiʿr al-muqawama and coloquialismo\, in relation to the distinct temporalities of the two conflicts.\nMonique Flores Ulysses considers U.S. cultural texts seemingly disconnected from war but nonetheless imbricated in war-making during the early years of the Global War on Terror.\nMichael Denning chairs this panel. \nThe Yale Working Group on Globalization and Culture is an interdisciplinary cultural studies laboratory that has been practicing collective research at Yale University for two decades. Over the years\, we have presented work collaboratively at numerous cultural studies conferences as well as at the Marxist Education Project\, the Left Forum\, Occupy Boston\, and the World Social Forum. Past projects have been published as “Going into Debt\,” online in Social Text’s Periscope\, and as “Spaces and Times of Occupation” in Transforming Anthropology; a collective interview regarding “Matters of Life and Death” appeared in Revue Française d’Études Américaines. DESCRIPTION:Convened with Fred Murphy\, Gerardo Rénique and Gunnett Kaaf\nA reading group to celebrate and reflect on two classic works of anti-imperialist writing first published fifty years ago but with an ongoing worldwide impact: Eduardo Galeano’s Open Veins of Latin America (1971) and Walter Rodney’s How Europe Underdeveloped Africa (1972). Extending our scope to Asia and bringing matters up to the present day\, we will conclude by reading Amitav Ghosh’s just-published The Nutmeg’s Curse: Parables for a Planet in Crisis. These discussions will be led by Gerardo Rénique and Fred Murphy\, joined by Gunnett Kaaf for the Africa sessions and consideration of Walter Rodney’s study. \nGerardo Rénique taught history for many years at the City College of New York. He is a frequent contributor to Socialism and Democracy and NACLA: Report on the Americas. His research interests include the political traditions of popular movements in Latin America\, and race\, national identity and state formation in Mexico. \nFred Murphy has led numerous study groups on Latin America\, ecosocialism\, and related topics at the Marxist Education Project since 2015. He studied and taught Latin American history at the New School for Social Research. In the 1980s he traveled in Latin America as a journalist for several socialist publications. \nGunnett Kaaf is a Marxist activist and writer based in Bloemfontein\, South Africa. \n  \nAll events are sliding scale—choose the level at which you are able to contribute to The Marxist Education Project. DESCRIPTION:A reading and discussion of Theodore W. Allen’s two volume work\nwith The Revolutions Study Group\nIn 1972\, after a lifetime of activism in the labor and communist movements\, Theodore W. Allen shared the following strategic insight with a new generation of revolutionaries: “The most vulnerable point at which a decisive blow can be struck against bourgeois rule in the U.S. is white supremacy. White supremacy is both the keystone (in the arch) and the Achilles heel of U.S. bourgeois democracy\, the historic form of bourgeois rule in the US.] \n \nIt is a vulnerable point because it is a historically developed and unresolvable internal contradiction of US bourgeois democracy. It is the decisive vulnerable point because—as history has repeatedly proved—the basic class contradictions in bourgeois democracy can never fully mature until and unless the anti-proletarian nature of white supremacy has been completely established in the minds of the proletarian masses.” \nTheodore W. DESCRIPTION:Towards a Revolution in Labor History: White Supremacism and Bourgeois Social Control in US History\nSean Ahearn and the Revolutions Study Group\n4 more sessions\nWhy is the US working class unorganized and suffering to a far greater extent than in other advanced capitalist societies?\nThere are two texts for these sessions: “Towards a Revolution in Labor History” (an unpublished manuscript by Theodore W. Allen now made available on line by the University of Massachusetts-Amherst) and The Southern Key: Class\, Race and Radicalism in the 1930s and 1940s by Michael Goldfield.These two critical works challenge the way in which US labor history is currently understood and taught. \nGoldfield connects racial oppression\, “white” blindness and “white” racial opportunism in the heyday of labor’s apparent greatest victories\, to it’s post war defeats and subsequent rise of neo-liberalism. \nAllen views the exclusion of the 17th\,18th\,and 19th century ante-bellum African American chattel laborer from standard labor histories as an example of the “White Blindspot” which supports “white” labor opportunism. Connected to this is a misunderstanding of the ante-bellum southern plantation system as a non-capitalist mode of production. The racially oppressed and exploited chattel laborer\, who produced the surplus value central to the growth of capitalism in North America\, is thereby placed outside the purview of “labor history\,” relegated to a pre- history\, a Black history\, a side show at best to the emergence of the factory system based on the waged European-American laborers in the 19th century. \nThe Revolutions Study Group (started at the Brecht Forum) has met since 2009. While these workers appear isolated from the Global North\, they are in fact deeply integrated into global commodity chains and essential to the maintenance of global capitalism. \nLooking at contemporary case studies in India\, the Philippines and South Africa\, this book affirms the significance of political and economic representation to the struggles of workers against deepening levels of poverty and inequality that oppress the majority of people on the planet. Immanuel Ness shows that workers are eager to mobilize to improve their conditions\, and can achieve lasting gains if they have sustenance and support from political organizations. From the Dickensian industrial zones of Delhi to the agrarian oligarchy on the island of Mindanao\, a common element remains – when workers organize they move closer to the realization of socialism\, solidarity and equality. \nImmanuel Ness is Professor of Political Science at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York and Senior Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg. He is the author and editor of many books\, including Southern Insurgency: The Coming of the Global Working Class (Pluto\, 2015) and Urban Revolt: State Power and the Rise of People’s Movements in the Global South (Haymarket\, 2017).

DESCRIPTION:Towards a Revolution in Labor History: White Supremacism and Bourgeois Social Control in US History\nSean Ahearn and the Revolutions Study Group\n4 more sessions\nWhy is the US working class unorganized and suffering to a far greater extent than in other advanced capitalist societies?\nThere are two texts for these sessions: “Towards a Revolution in Labor History” (an unpublished manuscript by Theodore W. Allen now made available on line by the University of Massachusetts-Amherst) and The Southern Key: Class\, Race and Radicalism in the 1930s and 1940s by Michael Goldfield.These two critical works challenge the way in which US labor history is currently understood and taught. \nGoldfield connects racial oppression\, “white” blindness and “white” racial opportunism in the heyday of labor’s apparent greatest victories\, to it’s post war defeats and subsequent rise of neo-liberalism. \nAllen views the exclusion of the 17th\,18th\,and 19th century ante-bellum African American chattel laborer from standard labor histories as an example of the “White Blindspot” which supports “white” labor opportunism. Connected to this is a misunderstanding of the ante-bellum southern plantation system as a non-capitalist mode of production. The racially oppressed and exploited chattel laborer\, who produced the surplus value central to the growth of capitalism in North America\, is thereby placed outside the purview of “labor history\,” relegated to a pre- history\, a Black history\, a side show at best to the emergence of the factory system based on the waged European-American laborers in the 19th century. \nThe Revolutions Study Group (started at the Brecht Forum) has met since 2009. The groups has recently completed an in-depth study of W.E.B. Dubois’ Black Reconstruction. Sean Ahearn is a long-time New York City activist\, organizer\, and instructor who has been thoroughly engaged with a study of the development of class in relationship to race from the time of the colonial settlers coming to the Americas to developments taking place during these days of late capital. \nThese classes originate in New York City. DESCRIPTION:The Maritime Factor in the Making of the Modern World\nAn 8-Week Reading Group convened with Fred Murphy\nThe global ocean serves as a trade route\, strategic space\, fish bank and supply chain for the modern capitalist economy. While sea beds are drilled for their fossil fuels and minerals\, and coastlines developed for real estate and leisure\, the oceans continue to absorb the toxic discharges of carbon civilization – warming\, expanding\, and acidifying the blue water part of the planet in ways that will bring unpredictable but irreversible consequences for the rest of the biosphere. We will read Liam Campling and Alejandro Colas’s new book Capitalism and the Sea\, in which they analyze these and other sea-related phenomena through a historical and geographical lens. \n \nLongtime socialist FRED MURPHY has led MEP study groups on ecosocialism\, science and technology\, and the history of capitalism since 2015. He studied and taught Latin American history at the New School for Social Research. \nSince this course will be conducted during NYC Daylight Savings Time\, the GMT times for these sessions will be 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm GMT. \n  \nAll classes and events are sliding scale.
