SUMMARY:The End of Capitalism: The Thought of Henryk Grossman
DESCRIPTION:A presentation and discussion with author Ted Reese\nFrom the Introduction\nHenryk Grossman is a name most socialists or students of political and social theory\, let alone the mass of working people around the world\, have probably never heard of. Yet Grossman\, a Polish Jew born in 1881\, deserves recognition as the most sophisticated proponent since Karl Marx of a devastating claim about the nature of our social world. For\, if Grossman’s neglected but brilliant insight into economics is correct\, then capitalism – the social system that has dominated life all over the globe for the past few centuries – may well be entering what he called its ‘final breakdown’. \nThe claim that capitalism is unsustainable has been ridiculed since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Capitalists declared ‘the end of history’ – their system had proven to be the stronger and would go on uncontested until the heat death of the universe. The same view dominated after the 1883 death of Marx\, whose three-volume masterpiece Capital exposed capitalism as a crisis-ridden and historically transient economic system (mode of production). \nFor the next half century even Marx’s self-proclaimed successors either declared capitalism to be crisis-free and inexhaustible\, or formulated flawed theories of crisis and collapse that did not support their own claims. Against the grain\, Grossman dedicated himself to restoring the basis of scientific socialism. In 1929 he illuminated Marx’s insights with a rare clarity and wit in his own great work\, The Law of Accumulation and Breakdown of the Capitalist System\, published in 1929. \nThe book received an almost universally hostile reception. Attacked by both reformist social democrats and revolutionary communists\, Grossman stood accused of promoting a ‘mechanical’ or ‘automatic’ theory of socialism’s ‘inevitable’ victory over capitalism that underplayed the importance of class struggle. \nTED REESE is a British Marxist in the tradition of Henryk Grossman. In Reese’s first book\, Socialism or Extinction: Climate\, Automation and War in the Final Capitalist Breakdown (2019) he argues: that capitalism is the cause of and can only continue to accelerate the existential climate crisis; that socialism and a plant-based (mainly hemp and mycelium) industrial revolution are required to save the planet’s habitability; that automation is abolishing the source of profit; and that the descent into negative interest rates indicates that capitalism is now entering its final crisis\, meaning that socialism is becoming an economic necessity for the first time – but that the crisis also threatens the greatest world war to date between the imperialist powers.

 Reading and Reflecting on ‘Porkopolis’
DESCRIPTION:Convened by Terike Haapoja and Fred Murphy\nA discussion and reading group on the central role of nonhuman animals in the capitalist economy\, both historically and today. We will explore the potential and limits of Marxist theory for addressing the roles and fates of nonhuman animals\, as well as ways to connect anticapitalist struggles to animal liberation and environmental justice. \nThe main reading will be Alex Blanchette’s Porkopolis: American Animality\, Standardized Life\, and the Factory Farm\, with supplemental texts on nonhuman animal work in the history of capitalism\, Marxism and animal liberation\, biological reproduction in animal agriculture\, and related topics. Through these readings we will explore how exploitation of animal bodies and the labor of nonhuman animals is bound up in the exploitation of human workers and the overall development of capitalism. Author Alex Blanchette will be joining us on March 9 to introduce his book. \nTerike Haapoja is a visual artist based in New York. Her interdisciplinary practice includes installations\, videos\, writings and collaborative projects that explore our relationship with the more-than-human world; mechanisms of exclusion and inclusion; and the possibility of political multispecies alliances. She is an adjunct professor at Parsons Fine Arts and New York University. \nFred Murphy has led numerous study groups on ecosocialism\, science and technology\, the history of capitalism\, and Latin American politics at the Marxist Education Project since 2015. SUMMARY:Grundrisse: The Chapter on Money (The first two notebooks)
DESCRIPTION:“Forces of production and social relations – two different sides of the development of the social individual – appear to capital as mere means\, and are merely means for it to produce on its limited foundation. In fact\, however\, they are the material conditions to blow this foundation sky-high…” —Karl Marx\, The Grundrisse  \nPerhaps the most curious and least understood aspect of Marx’s work is his method of analysis. Marx viewed all his economic laws as tendencies and it is hard to deny that those tendencies are becoming more and more the realities of today’s capitalism. However\, to understand our society we need to do more than reading and accepting his concepts\, we must critically analyze them and look for the way of thinking that produced them. It is with this goal in my mind that we should embark on a journey through the long and complex sentences of the Grundrisse. This work is perhaps the best representation of the process of thinking that found its culmination in Capital and we will be engaging with it during our study. Without a doubt\, this will be a long and arduous process but we should always keep in mind that “there is no royal road to science and only those who do not dread the fatiguing climb of its steep paths have a chance of gaining its luminous summits. Continuing on November 6\,  we will read from “The Chapter on Money” utilizing the Penguin edition of Marx’s Grundrisse. Recordings of prior sessions are available to all who would like to review. \n  \n  \n

Those of us fighting for a better future than Amazon’s dystopia have much to learn from this book”.  — Dania Rajendra\, Inaugural Director\, Athena Coalition \n‘Work hard\, have fun\, make history’ proclaims the slogan on the walls of Amazon’s warehouses. This cheerful message hides a reality of digital surveillance\, aggressive anti-union tactics and disciplinary layoffs. Reminiscent of the tumult of early industrial capitalism\, the hundreds of thousands of workers who help Amazon fulfil consumers’ desire are part of an experiment in changing the way we all work. \nIn this book\, Alessandro Delfanti takes readers inside Amazon’s warehouses to show how technological advancements and managerial techniques subdue the workers rather than empower them\, as seen in the sensors that track workers’ every movement around the floor and algorithmic systems that re-route orders to circumvent worker sabotage. He looks at new technologies including robotic arms trained by humans and augmented reality goggles\, showing that their aim is to standardize\, measure and discipline human work rather than replace it. \nDespite its innovation\, Amazon will always need living labor’s flexibility and low cost. And as the warehouse is increasingly automated\, worker discontent increases. Striking under the banner “we are not robots”\, employees have shown that they are acutely aware of such contradictions. SUMMARY:Capital\, Volume II: The Process of Circulation of Capital
DESCRIPTION:with Mary Boger\nVolume I of Capital is just the beginning of unraveling the underlying laws of capitalist development. In Volume I Marx demystifies “the commodity” by identifying the real sources of the production of wealth\, namely\, the human subject through our labor and nature. Capital subsumes these as commodities which are consumed within the process of production. After solving the form that the production of wealth takes within a society where generalized commodity production prevails under the domination of capital\, Marx takes on the next big question. How the hell can reproduction of society as a whole take place when there is no conscious social planning that ensures that all needs are met and in the necessary proportions such that a continuous reproduction of the conditions of life can take place and reproduce the capitalist relations of production? In Volume II\, The Process of Circulation of Capital\, we discover the solution to this problem while new internal contradictions and instabilities at a societal level inherent to this mode of production are explained. The ground is then laid in combining the laws of motion peculiar to capitalism uncovered in the first two Volumes—The Process of Capitalist Production and The Process of the Circulation of Capital—to the analysis of the third Volume\, The Process of Capitalist Production as a Whole. \n \nWe will begin our study of Volume II study by situating this volume in relation to the historical process of development of capitalist society which is premised on its specific social form of societal re-production\, the production of capital. To do so we will study the closing sections of the Penguin edition of Volume I\, specifically\, Part VIII: “So-called Primitive Accumulation” and the “Appendix: Results of the Immediate Process of Production”. \nJoin us as we journey through this movement from the imaginary concrete to the abstract concrete to the real concrete. We have been awakened from our collective ahistorical and apolitical slumbers. In an instant\, the mantra of there is no alternative has been replaced by whatever happens\, nothing will ever be the same. The ideology that says radical transformation is unrealistic has been irrevocably discredited. The bonds and rituals of everyday life have been loosened\, fragmented and disjointed. What seemed inevitable and iron clad now feels flimsy as nation states globally scramble to find solutions that don’t exist. This opens up a space for thinking\, and for politics. This new situation underscores a critical need for both practical intervention and an attempt at building a convergent philosophy that anticipates the praxis of the future. \nWe have endured over 40 years of the foreclosure of the political and suffered its failures to the limit in which the State and its functioning doesn’t seem to exist except as an appendage of the needs and welfare of the Global corporations. DESCRIPTION:A 6 Week Close-Reading and Discussion series \nConducted with the Capital Studies Group\nIn the Introduction to Augmented Exploitation\, co-editors Phoebe Moore and Jamie Woodcock point up two main problems with how automation and artificial intelligence are being discussed as the end of the first quarter of the 21st century draws near. Number one is the claim that Al is changing the labor process in new and unprecedented ways. But capitalists have always introduced machines in order to increase the amount of what each worker can produce in a given period of time. This is where the second problem comes in—either a certain process will be automated\, or it will not—a binary that focuses on machines and not on the workers who operate them. Rather than the prospects of automation and interpretive learning replacing workers\, we need rather to see that these are augmentations of the labor process. \n  \nAugmented Exploitation is divided into three areas: Making It\, Faking It\, and Breaking It. Going beyond platform work and the gig economy\, the authors explore emerging forms of algorithmic governance and Al-augmented apps that collect data about workers and consumers in innovative ways\, but also to to keep wages and worker representation under control. The contributors to Augmented Exploitation show that workers are not taking these dramatic changes lying down; they present case studies of new and exciting forms of resistance that are springing up across the globe. Join us to learn more of the reality of the impact of Artificial Intelligence (Al) on workers’ lives. \nDuring these six sessions we will also review several articles from this year’s Socialist Register\, Beyond Digital Capitalism: New Ways of Living. In particular\, we will discuss “The Time of Our Lives”\, Bryan Palmer’s essay on capital and temporality\, and Larry Lohmann’s essay on “Interpretive Learning”. Time\, always a frontier of class struggle\, pushed by automation and other digital management controls that are ever-present today\, is now at the forefront of contentious labor-capital relations. Lohmann stresses a number of challenges that interpretation machines have presented to movement organizing and in response argues that it is important to understand the continuities between industrial-era and digital-era value-creation rather than to only focus on the differences. He also emphasizes that the contradiction between living and dead labor that Marx identified not only persists in today’s digital economy\, but also remains fundamental both to understanding crisis and to identifying possibilities for radical political change. \n The CAPITAL STUDIES GROUP has been meeting on Saturdays for more than four years. Marx’s scientific presentation of the laws of motion of capitalist development begins by analyzing the fundamental or elemental form which wealth takes in our society\, the commodity. Understanding this form leads us to the most basic law that grounds social reproduction in societies under the domination of capital\, the law of value. Therefore\, in Session I\, our first task was to break through the appearance and reveal the social content of the commodity form\, the beginning of the unraveling of the why and how of what we necessarily\, under the domination and exploitation of capital\, experience every day in our lives. \nThe first four Parts of Volume I revealed the historical process of development that led to industrial capital\, the productive base/infrastructure required for the generalization of the capitalist production of commodities as the dominate social form throughout all our societies and nations today. Session 3\, Chapters 15 through 25\, will trace this development and reveals new dynamics and contradictions inherent to the logic of capitalist accumulation\, culminating in Chapter 25\, The General Law of Capitalist Accumulation. Rising phoenix-like from the ashes of the old trade union movement\, workers’ struggle is being reborn from below by workers themselves. \nBy engaging in what Karl Marx called a workers’ inquiry\, workers and militant co-researchers are studying their working conditions\, the technical composition of capital\, and how to recompose their own power in order to devise new tactics\, strategies\, organizational forms and objectives. Private ownership and control over our earth’s natural resources by the owners of capital and separation of the world’s population from any direct access to our conditions of life and what we produce have reduced our human productive activity to a thing that is bought and sold at the bidding of capital. \nUncovering the how\, what and for whom our life processes are determined based on the logic of using money in order to make more money is a journey we need to take if we are to consciously situate ourselves within our given historical process as effective political/social/universal actors. Marx’s scientific presentation of the laws of motion of capitalist development begins by analyzing the fundamental or elemental form which wealth takes in our society\, the commodity. Understanding this form leads us to the most basic law that grounds social reproduction in societies under the domination of capital\, the law of value. SUMMARY:Re:sources / Re:lations with Working Group on Globalization and Culture
DESCRIPTION:The Yale Working Group on Globalization and Culture will share our collective research on two ubiquitous words of our contemporary vocabulary: resources and relations. There was a meeting on May 16 (described below in thematic Clusters One)  and the next meeting will take place on June 6. \nThe current WGGC collective of Aanchal Saraf\, Bench Ansfield\, Clara Wilson-Hawken\, Ever Osorio\, Jessica Marion Modi\, Lucero Estrella\, Maru Pabón\, Michael Denning\, Monique Flores Ulysses\, Peter Raccuglia\, Salonee Bhaman\, and Simon Torracinta — work in American studies\, African-American studies\, Latinx studies\, history\, literary criticism\, science and technology studies\, and women’s\, gender and sexuality studies. WGGC will share their collective research on two ubiquitous words of our contemporary vocabulary: resources and relations. \nTHEMATIC CLUSTERS ONE: On Sunday May 16\, we will present the first two clusters\, Affordances for Whom? Making and Unmaking Resources\, and Language as Resource and Relation. The first part explores how land\, nature\, people\, and time are conceived of and transformed into “resources”: depictions of land as a resource for migrants\, and of migrants for empires; of Indigenous land as a resource for extraction and settlement; and of time as an abstract resource for leisure in the twentieth century. The second part examines language\, poetry\, and political slogans as resources and relations from post-emancipation Black cultures to contemporary Mexican feminisms. How do the abstractions of the category of “resource” – enforced by states\, settlers\, or science – change the meanings of concrete things? Who gets to define how and for whom resources are made? \nTHEMATIC CLUSTERS TWO: On Sunday June 6\, we will present the final two clusters: Source Memory: Relating Archival Contradictions and The Relations of Human Resources. The first part offers disparate meditations on the complex process of engaging with archival sources. Cohering around the verb “relate” – which means both to form an affinity or kinship with and to narrate a story – we take up stories of a record producer in everything but her own words\, of an immigration bureaucracy’s interrogation of a man and his family\, and of the piecing together of family histories in the intergenerational wake of an earthquake. Our final cluster probes the half-lives of human resources\, from the origins of the discourse of human resources\, to the depletion of inner resources and the politics of “burnout\,” to the valuations of risk and life within viatical insurance in a pandemic. \nThe Working Group on Globalization and Culture http://wggc.yale.edu/ is an interdisciplinary cultural studies laboratory that has been practicing collective research at Yale University since 2003. Over the years\, we have presented work at numerous cultural studies conferences as well at The Marxist Education Project\, the Left Forum\, Occupy Boston\, and the World Social Forum. Projects have been published as “Going into Debt\,” online in Social Text’s Periscope\, and as “Spaces and Times of Occupation” in Transforming Anthropology; a collective interview regarding “Matters of Life and Death” appeared in Revue Française d’Études Américaines. \nAll events are sliding scale.
