SUMMARY:The Aesthetics of Resistance: Art and Fascism in the 1930s
DESCRIPTION:Join ongoing weekly sessions of the MEP Literature Group as we read together The Aesthetics of Resistance\, the masterwork of German author Peter Weiss. This trilogy of historical novels opens in 1937 and details the interactions of the narrator and his peers and family with historical figures of the European left engaged in the fight against fascism. As the characters encounter each other clandestinely to discuss political questions\, they also discuss works of art and question how the art of the past can support their resistance to a horrific present: what can art suggest for a future they may not live to see? \nJust as Weiss’s characters rely upon group discussion\, readers of this trilogy have often formed reading groups to aid their understanding of the novelist’s ambitions. The MEP is joining this leftist tradition. We will read these challenging novels slowly and discuss themes such as strategy and tactics in the fight against fascism\, and the works of art that inspired the characters’ discussions. Familiarity with art history or with Europe in the 1930s is neither required nor expected. \nPublisher’s web pages for The Aesthetics of Resistance: Volume 1 / Volume 2 / Volume 3\nSecond-hand bookstores\, online resellers\, and public libraries may have copies of these books available. Celeste Marcus and Mitch Abidor have both spent time in the West Bank doing protective presence\, accompanying Palestinians in their fields and with their flocks and confronting settlers who are far less likely to kill and even attack Palestinians if protective presence activists are on the ground. Mitch and Celeste will be discussing their experiences and their new organization\, Protective Presence USA\, which is assisting Americans in joining this effort to fight off the annexation of Palestinian land. \nMitch Abidor is a writer and translator. His latest book is Victor Serge: Unruly Revolutionary. He’s currently working on an oral history of the Israeli socialist anti-Zionist organization Matzpen. \nCeleste Marcus is the executive editor of Liberties Journal and the author of Chaim Soutine: Genius\, Obsession and a Dramatic Life in Art. She has written widely about settler terrorism in the West Bank.

DESCRIPTION:Film Noir\, Greed\, and Corporate Graft in LaLa Land\nA five-session reading group with novelist and scholar Dennis Broe\, presented by the Institute for the Radical Imagination and co-sponsored by the MEP\, LA Progressive and People’s World\nOrson Welles once called Los Angeles “a bright\, guilty place\,” and that is as true today as it was in the 1940s when Welles coined this description. Dennis Broe leads a group reading of his five Los Angeles novels* set in the film-noir period of the late 1940s and early 1950s. The contradictions we will unearth in that postwar period\, the period of crime films that visually documented this seedy reality\, have never been resolved\, only continually papered over\, and so they resound today. We will look at five industries and moments in this period with a view toward explaining how the postwar period set the tone for what was to follow\, leading to the present era of a vast income disparity and frequent “natural\,” though totally avoidable\, disasters. \n*The novels – Left of Eden\, A Hello to Arms\, The Precinct with the Golden Arm\, The House That Buff Built\, and The Dark Ages – are detailed in this syllabus. DESCRIPTION:A video of this April 12\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nAlan Wald presents an overview of the state of emergency in higher education in the United States that recalls earlier eras of extreme political repression\, such as McCarthyism in the 1950s. Students\, faculty\, and staff at US colleges and universities who stand up for Palestinian human rights and stopping the genocide in Gaza are being punished by the administrations\, and in some cases – such as Mahmoud Khalil – threatened with deportation. They are charged with being antisemitic\, even though the movement is antiracist and a sizable fraction of the protesters are themselves Jewish. This campaign is being used as a smokescreen to dismantle programs in Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI) and set Jews against other minorities. Students\, faculty\, and staff are facing deportation\, arrest\, suspension\, termination\, and other draconian measures that undermine both civil liberties and academic freedom. \nAlan Wald is active in this controversy as it plays out at the University of Michigan (U-M)\, through his membership in the U-M Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine\, and nationally\, as a member of the Academic Council of Jewish Voice for Peace. He is the H. Chandler Davis Collegiate Professor Emeritus of English Literature and American Culture at U-M\, and formerly director of the U-M Department of American Culture. His academic specialty is the US Literary Left\, about which he has authored nine books\, and he is an editor of the journals Against the Current and Science & Society.

To honor the struggles and sufferings of the Chilean people\, the MEP’s Literature Group dedicates this reading group to Chilean writers active before\, during\, and since the Pinochet dictatorship. In addition to the justly well-known writings of Roberto Bolaño\, many of our readings will be from translations by Megan McDowell. McDowell has worked with US and British independent publishers to promote a diverse group of writers largely unfamiliar to American audiences. SUMMARY:Chile's 9/11: Fifty Years of Literary Resistance
DESCRIPTION:September 2023 marks fifty years since the overthrow of Salvador Allende’s socialist government on September 11\, 1973. SUMMARY:Imperialism: The Long View and the Big Picture
DESCRIPTION:Video introduction\nImperialism is an economic and political system of war and conquest by great powers\, but it is also the lived experience of the conquered and subjugated. This almost always entails the murder\, rape\, theft\, enslavement\, and myriad humiliations of the dominated and colonized. Empires have committed genocide\, eliminating entire peoples\, and ethnocide\, erasing the nationality\, language\, and culture of the conquered. And the conquered have resisted\, risen up\, rebelled\, and often succeeded at least for a time in escaping the grip of empires. Even so\, new imperial or neocolonial systems often reimpose their domination in new ways\, leading to further resistance and rebellion. \nIn eight weekly sessions guided by Dan La Botz\, we will look at imperialism in the long view\, from the ancient world to today. We will examine the experience of imperialism and the theoretical justifications for it\, as well as anti-imperialist movements and their arguments. We will look at imperialism as economic phenomenon\, as political strategy\, as cultural experience\, and as psychological affect. We will discuss imperialism and gender and imperialism and the environment. \nSee the initial syllabus for further details. \nDan La Botz is a retired historian of the United States and Latin America and a longtime political activist on the left. He holds a Ph.D. in U.S. History from the University of Cincinnati and has taught at several universities\, most recently in the City University of New York School of Labor and Urban Studies. He is the author of a dozen books and scores of journalistic and academic articles on labor movements\, social movements\, and politics in the United States\, Mexico\, Nicaragua\, and Indonesia. He is a co-editor of the journal New Politics.

SUMMARY:The New Power Elite: C. Wright Mills Revisited
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS POSTPONED – new date to be announced\nIn 1956\, sociologist C. Wright Mills published The Power Elite\, a study that challenged conventional postwar assumptions that the United States was a society of democracy and upward mobility. Mills analyzed how power and social status in the 1950s had become concentrated in an immense corporate-government power complex that overrode the country’s apparently democratic and egalitarian institutions. Mills feared that\, if not constrained\, concentration and centralization of power at the top of modern society would result in a revival of the violent capitalist authoritarianism or fascism that marked the 1920s and 30s. The Power Elite had a profound influence on the rise of the New Left and contributed to the revival of Marxism in the 1960s (although Mills himself was not a Marxist). \nIn The New Power Elite\, Heather Gautney offers us a contemporary companion to Mills’s work through a fresh critique for the new millennium. She takes up the problems that Mills addressed and echoes his outrage over the injustices and ruin brought by today’s elites. She grounds her analysis more in political economy than in institutional authority as Mills did. Gautney also accounts for changes in global capitalism over the last forty years\, arguing that neoliberalism and the centering of the market in political and social life has ushered in ever more extreme forms of violence and exploitation and a drift toward authoritarianism. \nHeather Gautney\, Associate Professor of Sociology at Fordham University\, has authored numerous books and articles on social inequality\, U.S. politics\, labor\, and social movements\, and opinion essays for major news outlets. SUMMARY:Woman\, Life\, Freedom: Iran through the Lens of Antonio Gramsci
DESCRIPTION:With Piruz Alemi\nJuxtaposing documentary video footage with selected readings from Antonio Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks\, we will deepen our understanding of the current uprising among women and young people in Iran. Applying Gramsci’s dual perspective on Individuality/Universality\, Hegemony/Authority\, Force/Consent\, Terror/Legitimacy\, Strategy/Tactic\, Agitation/Propaganda\, and State/Civil Society\, we will examine spontaneous movements\, subaltern groups\, and the balance of domestic and international forces. These sessions will offer an opportunity for participants to document\, write\, screen films\, archive\, brainstorm\, and stay informed about the movement for Woman\, Life\, Freedom in Iran. They will be accessible to people at all levels of familiarity with Gramsci’s work and Iranian history and politics. \nConvened and facilitated by Piruz Alemi\, who holds a PhD in political economy from the New School for Social Research and an MFA in documentary film making from CCNY. He is director of the People of Color International Cultural Exchange Film Festival. He has taught at John Jay College/CUNY for 15 years and holds a research fellowship at Sheffield university in the UK.

We have compiled a reading list from an essay by Niloufar Talebi\, “100 Essential Books by Iranian Writers: An Introduction & Nonfiction\,” published on the Asian American Writers’ Workshop website. As we read\, one question we will keep in mind is that posed by Talebi: How does the publishing market limit Americans’ understanding of Iranian efforts? \nOver nine weeks we will read three novels set from the 1920s to the present: The Gardens of Consolation\, by Parisa Reza; Women Without Men\, by Shahrnush Parsipur; and Man of My Time\, by Dalia Sofer. SUMMARY:Woman\, Life\, Freedom: Iran through the Lens of Antonio Gramsci
DESCRIPTION:With Piruz Alemi\nJuxtaposing documentary video footage with selected readings from Antonio Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks\, we will deepen our understanding of the current uprising among women and young people in Iran. Applying Gramsci’s dual perspective on Individuality/Universality\, Hegemony/Authority\, Force/Consent\, Terror/Legitimacy\, Strategy/Tactic\, Agitation/Propaganda\, and State/Civil Society\, we will examine spontaneous movements\, subaltern groups\, and the balance of domestic and international forces. These sessions will offer an opportunity for participants to document\, write\, screen films\, archive\, brainstorm\, and stay informed about the movement for Woman\, Life\, Freedom in Iran. They will be accessible to people at all levels of familiarity with Gramsci’s work and Iranian history and politics. \nConvened and facilitated by Piruz Alemi\, who holds a PhD in political economy from the New School for Social Research and an MFA in documentary film making from CCNY. He is director of the People of Color International Cultural Exchange Film Festival. He has taught at John Jay College/CUNY for 15 years and holds a research fellowship at Sheffield university in the UK.
