SUMMARY:Chile's 9/11: Fifty Years of Literary Resistance
DESCRIPTION:September 2023 marks fifty years since the overthrow of Salvador Allende’s socialist government on September 11\, 1973. To honor the struggles and sufferings of the Chilean people\, the MEP’s Literature Group dedicates two eight-week series to Chilean writers active before\, during\, and since the Pinochet dictatorship. In addition to the justly well-known writings of Roberto Bolaño\, many of our readings will be from translations by Megan McDowell. McDowell has worked with US and British independent publishers to promote a diverse group of writers largely unfamiliar to American audiences. Our aim\, to quote McDowell\, is “to expand our circles of empathy.” \nFull book descriptions and a reading schedule are available here. \nConvened by Jacqueline Cantwell\, who became involved with the MEP’s Literature Group because of her love of Victor Serge’s novels. Participating in an MEP reading group led by Serge translator Richard Greeman seven years ago\, Jacqueline found a community of readers eager to be challenged by the ambitions of international writers devoted to the creative potential of political fiction. Since the death of Michael Lardner\, who hosted and organized the Literature Group for so many years\, she has taken the lead in furthering the group’s goals of exploring international fiction and encouraging thoughtful conversation.

SUMMARY:The New Power Elite: C. Wright Mills Revisited
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS POSTPONED – new date to be announced\nIn 1956\, sociologist C. Wright Mills published The Power Elite\, a study that challenged conventional postwar assumptions that the United States was a society of democracy and upward mobility. Mills analyzed how power and social status in the 1950s had become concentrated in an immense corporate-government power complex that overrode the country’s apparently democratic and egalitarian institutions. Mills feared that\, if not constrained\, concentration and centralization of power at the top of modern society would result in a revival of the violent capitalist authoritarianism or fascism that marked the 1920s and 30s. The Power Elite had a profound influence on the rise of the New Left and contributed to the revival of Marxism in the 1960s (although Mills himself was not a Marxist). \nIn The New Power Elite\, Heather Gautney offers us a contemporary companion to Mills’s work through a fresh critique for the new millennium. She takes up the problems that Mills addressed and echoes his outrage over the injustices and ruin brought by today’s elites. She grounds her analysis more in political economy than in institutional authority as Mills did. Gautney also accounts for changes in global capitalism over the last forty years\, arguing that neoliberalism and the centering of the market in political and social life has ushered in ever more extreme forms of violence and exploitation and a drift toward authoritarianism. \nHeather Gautney\, Associate Professor of Sociology at Fordham University\, has authored numerous books and articles on social inequality\, U.S. politics\, labor\, and social movements\, and opinion essays for major news outlets. She has served as a senior policy advisor to Senator Bernie Sanders. \n(This event was originally scheduled for Wednesday\, April 19.)

DESCRIPTION:With Piruz Alemi\nJuxtaposing documentary video footage with selected readings from Antonio Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks\, we will deepen our understanding of the current uprising among women and young people in Iran. Applying Gramsci’s dual perspective on Individuality/Universality\, Hegemony/Authority\, Force/Consent\, Terror/Legitimacy\, Strategy/Tactic\, Agitation/Propaganda\, and State/Civil Society\, we will examine spontaneous movements\, subaltern groups\, and the balance of domestic and international forces. These sessions will offer an opportunity for participants to document\, write\, screen films\, archive\, brainstorm\, and stay informed about the movement for Woman\, Life\, Freedom in Iran. They will be accessible to people at all levels of familiarity with Gramsci’s work and Iranian history and politics. \nConvened and facilitated by Piruz Alemi\, who holds a PhD in political economy from the New School for Social Research and an MFA in documentary film making from CCNY. He is director of the People of Color International Cultural Exchange Film Festival. He has taught at John Jay College/CUNY for 15 years and holds a research fellowship at Sheffield university in the UK.

SUMMARY:From Austerity to Fascism: The Capital Order
DESCRIPTION:A video of this December 10\, 2022\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel.\n\nClara E. Mattei presents The Capital Order\, in which she explores the intellectual origins of austerity to uncover its originating motives: the protection of capital – and indeed capitalism – in times of social upheaval from below. Drawing on newly uncovered archival material from Britain and Italy\, she offers a damning account of the rise of austerity – and of modern economics – at the levers of contemporary political power. Mattei reveals how the threat of working-class power in the years after World War I animated policies that elevated owners\, smothered workers\, and imposed a rigid economic hierarchy across societies. Where austerity “succeeded\,” relatively speaking\, was in their enrichment of ruling-class interests who accumulated power and capital at the expense of labor. Here is where the true value of austerity can be observed: its insulation of entrenched privilege and its elimination of all alternatives to capitalism. \nClara E. Mattei is assistant professor of economics at the New School for Social Research in New York City. She was a 2018-2019 member of the School of Social Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Studies.

Applying Gramsci’s dual perspective on Individuality/Universality\, Hegemony/Authority\, Force/Consent\, Terror/Legitimacy\, Strategy/Tactic\, Agitation/Propaganda\, and State/Civil Society\, we will examine spontaneous movements\, subaltern groups\, and the balance of domestic and international forces. These sessions will offer an opportunity for participants to document\, write\, screen films\, archive\, brainstorm\, and stay informed about the movement for Woman\, Life\, Freedom in Iran. They will be accessible to people at all levels of familiarity with Gramsci’s work and Iranian history and politics. \nConvened and facilitated by Piruz Alemi\, who holds a PhD in political economy from the New School for Social Research and an MFA in documentary film making from CCNY. He is director of the People of Color International Cultural Exchange Film Festival. DESCRIPTION:A presentation and discussion with Emre Sahin and Meghan Bodette\nSince the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War\, the peoples of Northeast Syria\, commonly known as Rojava\, have been building an alternative system of governance based on the principles of direct democracy\, gender equality\, pluralism\, anti-capitalism\, and social ecology. On the occasion of International Workers’ Day\, this event will focus on two of the pillars of Rojava’s vision as developed by the Kurdish movement\, namely women’s liberation and cooperative economy. Our speakers will trace the development of the Kurdish women’s movement and discuss the growth of Rojava’s cooperative economy\, highlighting women’s autonomous economic organizing. \nEmre Sahin is a participant and researcher of social movements\, particularly the Kurdish movement\, and a sociologist at Binghamton University.\nMeghan Bodette is a researcher focused on Turkey\, Syria and Kurdish issues. \n

DESCRIPTION:2nd in the Socialist Register 58 Series: Old Polarizations\, New Contradictions: The Crisis of Centrism\nBILL FLETCHER                  Trump and the Danger of Right-wing Populism in the US\nSAMIR GANDESHA            Identity Crisis: The Politics of False Concreteness\nINGAR SOLTY                       Market Polarization Means Political Polarization \nBill Fletcher’s essay on the “Danger of Right-Wing Populism in the US” presents a careful appraisal of the forces marshalled on the right over the course of the Trump presidency\, leading to the insurrection of January 2021. Fletcher’s longstanding contention\, put forth in his widely-noted ‘Stars and Bars’ essay in the Politics of the Right volume\, was of the dangers of a rightwing mass movement emerging in the US. \nSamir Gandesha seeks an answer in what he identifies as ‘a fragmentation of the universalism that had historically underwritten the struggle for socialism’ leading to what he terms a ‘politics of false concreteness’ centered on forms of identity politics on both the left and the right. Indeed\, in the absence of a ‘left universalism’\, Gandesha argues\, ‘we can only expect the logic of polarization to drive an already accelerating authoritarianism\, as rightwing demagogues mobilize support based on racialized grievances’. This can only be met by a ‘class identity’ that seeks a universalism ‘in its own self-dissolution’\, that is\, in the struggle against classes as such and thus capitalism. \nIngar Solty’s “Market Polarization Means Political Polarization” is a third assessment of this particular moment. Solty’s contention is that the social polarizations that result from the market processes set in motion by neoliberalism bring with them a political polarization in the form of fissures in the party systems of liberal democracies\, allowing the hard right new political space to occupy and permitting varied forms of authoritarian nationalism to take hold. DESCRIPTION:“Of course\, as opposed to the colonizer\, the world of the colonized is visibly and thus irreparably multiple – because included in the world of the colonized is the world of the colonizer.”. —How Do We Know the Things That Make Us?\, An essay from Gina Apostol \nGina Apostol’s Insurrecto is a harrowing depiction of the nearly 125-year history of U.S. intervention\, occupation\, and domination in the Philippines. Through a compelling historical\, cultural\, post-modernist journey\, the author recounts the U.S. hold on the Philippines\, as told by Magsalin\, a Filipina translator and screenwriter\, and Chiara\, an American filmmaker. The U.S.-made merry-go-round of dictators has circled around Manila and the 7\,000-plus islands of the Philippines since the 1901 massacre at Balangiga—the slaughter of more than 2\,500 Filipinos in retaliation for 40 American soldiers killed in a raid by local national liberationists. When President Theodore Roosevelt issued a command to pacify the Philippines after the raid was reported to him\, the local U.S. general issued the following command:  “I want no prisoners. I wish you to kill and burn; the more you kill and burn\, the better it will please me… The interior of Samar must be made a howling wilderness.” From that point on he was known as “Howling Wilderness” Smith. Insurrecto spans the decades from the moment of the massacre to the current Duterte regime\, with much between—a fractured story of torture and misrepresentation over many years of U.S. and western hegemony. \nPlease join Gina Apostol and  Patricia McManus for an evening of discovery as they discuss the inspiration\, writing\, and more of this astonishing novel (published by Soho Press). \nGINA APOSTOL’s third book\, Gun Dealers’ Daughter\, won the2013 PEN/Open Book Award and was shortlisted for the William Saroyan International Prize.
