SUMMARY:The Politics of Collecting with Eunsong Kim
DESCRIPTION:In her new book\, The Politics of Collecting: Race and the Aestheticization of Property\, Eunsong Kim traces how racial capitalism and colonialism situated the rise of US museum collections and conceptual art forms. Ranging from the conception of philanthropy devised by the robber barons of the late nineteenth century to ongoing digitization projects\, Kim provides a new history of contemporary art that accounts for the complicated entanglement of race\, capital\, and labor behind storied art institutions and artists. Drawing on history\, theory\, and economics\, Kim challenges received notions of artistic success and talent and calls for a new vision of art beyond the cultural institution. \nEunsong Kim is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Northeastern University. Her practice spans literary studies\, critical digital studies\, poetics\, translation\, visual culture and critical race & ethnic studies. She is also the author of Gospel of Regicide (2017) and\, with Sung Gi Kim\, a translation of Kim Eon Hee’s poetic text Have You Been Feeling Blue These Days? (2019). In 2021 she co-founded the journal offshoot\, an arts space for transnational activist conversations.

SUMMARY:Bertolt Brecht's Anti-Capitalist Aesthetics
DESCRIPTION:A video of this February 22\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nPresenting Bertolt Brecht’s Adaptations and Anti-capitalist Aesthetics Today\, a new book by Anthony Squiers. The author will provide an overview of Brecht’s revolutionary Marxist aesthetic and examine its usefulness as a weapon in today’s struggles. \nSquiers’s book\, published by Brill\, examines Brecht’s theory and method of adaptation\, using four key Brechtian concepts: Fabel\, gestus\, estrangement effects\, and historicizing. Using that framework\, it analyzes four Brechtian adaptations: The Tutor\, Don Juan\, “Socrates Wounded\,” and Kriegsfibel\, concluding that Brecht is useful for anti-capitalist aesthetics today because through him one can foster a new consciousness which enables the creation of better social conditions. The book is of value to theatrical practitioners\, artists\, and theorists. \nAnthony Squiers is a faculty member at AMDA College of the Performing Arts and co-editor of E-CIBS\, the performance journal of the International Brecht Society. He is author of An Introduction to the Social and Political Philosophy of Bertolt Brecht.

From art collectives and farm worker strikes to prison “universities\,” Arise! reconstructs how radical organizers found new ways to fight global capitalism and forge an anti-racist internationalism from below. \nChristina Heatherton is the Elting Associate Professor of American Studies and Human Rights at Trinity College. With Jordan T. Camp she edited Policing the Planet: Why the Policing Crisis Led to Black Lives Matter and Freedom Now! Struggles for the Human Right to Housing in LA and Beyond. Fiction is a lie that tells us true things\, over and over.” – Neil Gaiman \nThe Marxist Education Project Lit reading group revisits some literary classics along with contemporary novels that are prescient and compelling –challenging us to think about our understanding of history and how we will confront the present moment. \n  \nColonel Chabert by Honoré de Balzac (originally published in 1832)\nOne of the shorter\, but also prescient novels of Balzac’s “The Human Comedy” (La Comédie Humaine)\, Colonel Chabert Balzac juxtaposes two world-views: the Napoleonic value-system\, founded on honor and military valor and that of the Restoration\, through the story of a returning soldier who is literally dead to the world. The discussion of this has concluded. \nAt Night All Blood is Black by David Diop (2018)\nAlfa Ndiaye is a Senegalese man who\, never before having left his village\, finds himself fighting as a so-called “Chocolat” soldier with the French army during World War One. Peppered with bullets and magic\, this remarkable novel fills in a forgotten chapter in the history of the “Great War’\, as WWI was known until the next world war. Blending oral storytelling traditions with the gritty\, day-to-day\, journalistic horror of life in the trenches\, David Diop’s At Night All Blood is Black is a dazzling tale of a descent into complete madness The discussion of this has concluded. \nThe Pull of the Stars by Emma Donaghue (2020)\nDublin\, 1918: three days in a maternity ward at the height of the Great Flu. A small world of work\, risk\, death and unlooked-for love. In an Ireland doubly ravaged by war and disease\, Nurse Julia Power works at an understaffed hospital in the city center—the ward where expectant mothers who have come down with the terrible new flu are quarantined. \nConquered City by Victor Serge (1932)\n1919-1920: St. Petersburg\, city of the czars\, has fallen to the Revolution. Conquered City is about terror: the Red Terror and the White Terror. But mainly about the Red\, the Communists who have dared to pick up the weapons of power—police\, guns\, jails\, spies\, treachery—in the doomed gamble that by wielding them righteously\, they can put an end to the need for terror\, perhaps forever. Conquered City is their tragedy and testament. \nSlaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut (1969)\nSlaughterhouse Five follows the life and experiences of Billy Pilgrim\, from his early years\, to his time as an American soldier and chaplain’s assistant during World War II\, to the post-war years\, with Billy occasionally traveling through time. The time travel returns to the fire-bombing of Dresden\, which was a firebombing by the British and Americans incinerating about 25\,000. Vonnegut’s novel has been called an example of “unmatched moral clarity” and “one of the most enduring antiwar novels of all time”. Vonnegut had been a prisoner of war in Dresden during this bombing. \n

Over the past decade\, they’ve trained more than 1000 artistic activists across the United States and around the world. Steve D. is a lifelong activist\, who has also published six books and countless articles on the intersection of culture and politics\, most notably Dream or Nightmare: Reimagining Politics in an Age of Fantasy\, and the Cultural Resistance Reader. Steve L. is an internationally recognized artist whose public projects have appeared in Times Square\, cities around the United States\, and in London and Melbourne. He is featured in four documentary films and over two dozen books. He’s worked alongside the Yes Men and Greenpeace\, and won awards from the Art Matters Foundation\, Prix Ars Electronica\, and Creative Work Fund.
