SUMMARY:Mutant Ecologies in the Age of Genomic Capital
DESCRIPTION:The interconnected fields of genomic science\, genome editing\, and biotechnology have emerged over the past half-century as a revolution in the production of new life forms that have been eagerly adopted by agriculture\, pharmaceuticals\, textiles\, and other business sectors. While many – including the Nobel Committee – have heralded this as a “new epoch” of limitless possibilities for positive transformation\, In Mutant Ecologies: Manufacturing Life in the Age of Genomic Capital\, Erica Borg and Amedeo Policante show how genetic science has been deeply intertwined from its beginning with the raw imperatives of capital accumulation. “Genomic capital\,” the authors’ term for the use of genetic materials in industrial production\, has literally altered many of life’s metabolic processes in service to capital’s demands. Within a socio-historical context defined by the iron rules of competition and exploitation\, capital no longer contents itself with simply appropriating the living bodies of plants and animals but purposefully designs their internal metabolism\, and in that way it redesigns the countless living vectors that constitute the global biosphere. This biological revolution will ripple through the everyday lives of people everywhere. Erica and Amedeo will present Mutant Ecologies and Ariel Salleh and  Stuart Newman will discuss the book and initiate the conversation. \nBook available from the publisher\, Pluto Press. \nErica Borg is a geographer and political ecologist based at King’s College\, London. Their research focuses on the relations between capitalism\, colonialism\, patriarchy and ecological crisis. \nAmedeo Policante is a Researcher at the Nova University of Lisbon. His writings interrogate the nexus of extraction\, exploitation and expropriation that fuels the contemporary world market. He is the author of two books: The Pirate Myth and The New Mercenaries. \nAriel Salleh (discussant) is the author of Ecofeminism as Politics and numerous other books and essays on political ecology as an emerging study of humanity-nature relations. Her “embodied materialist” approach emphasizes the centrality of reproductive or regenerative labour in the world system. At present she is Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Humanities\, Nelson Mandela University\, South Africa. \nStuart Newman (discussant) is professor of cell biology and anatomy at New York Medical College and a leading scientific critic of the use of developmental biology to modify human species identity\, including cloning and germline genetic manipulation. Among his numerous books and publications\, Stuart is the co-author with Tina Stevens of Biotech Juggernaut: Hope\, Hype\, and Hidden Agendas of Entrepreneurial BioScience.

With a sweeping\, experimental narrative\, Haiven takes us on a global journey that includes looted treasures\, the American system of mass incarceration\, the history of modern art and the industrialisation of war. Beyond simply calling for more consumer boycotts\, Haiven argues for recognising in palm oil humanity’s profound potential to shape our world beyond racial capitalism and neo-colonial dispossession. \nMax Haiven is a writer and teacher and Canada Research Chair in Culture\, Media and Social Justice. His most recent books are Art after Money\, Money after Art: Creative Strategies Against Financialization (2018) and Revenge Capitalism: The Ghosts of Empire\, the Demons of Capital\, and the Settling of Unpayable Debts (2020). Max also edits VAGABONDS\, a series of short\, radical books from Pluto Press. He teaches at Lakehead University\, where he co-directs the ReImagining Value Action Lab (RiVAL).

DESCRIPTION:‘What is permaculture?’ \nIf you have just heard of the movement and do not know much about it\, you might well think that permaculture is about food growing and gardens. But if you have asked a permaculture afficionado you will have been told that that conception is a mistake. In fact\, there are a variety of different ways of defining permaculture. As a sustainable system of agriculture based on tree crops\, as a system of sustainable agriculture and settlement design\, as a design philosophy for a sustainable society. There is much to be gained from exploring these different conceptions in detail. Those are questions about the foundation of permaculture in ideas. But it is also important to explain permaculture as a social movement\, a body of people\, their actions and the ways that they think about the world. \nPermaculture is an environmental movement that makes us reevaluate what it means to be sustainable. Through innovative agriculture and settlement design\, the movement creates new communities that are harmonious with nature. It has grown from humble origins on a farm in 1970s Australia and flourished into a worldwide movement that confronts industrial capitalism. \nThe Politics of Permaculture is one of the first books to unpack the theory and practice of this social movement that looks to challenge the status quo. Drawing upon the rich seam of publications and online communities from the movement as well as extensive interviews with permaculture practitioners and organisations from around the world\, Leahy explains the ways permaculture is understood and practiced in different contexts. In the face of extreme environmental degradation and catastrophic climate change\, we urgently need a new way of living. \nThis book is available to download through the Open Access program. \nTERRY LEAHY has been involved in the permaculture movement since its founding in 1978. He has lectured in universities since 1973 and retired at the end of 2016. His recent book\, Food Security for Rural Africa: Feeding the Farmers First (Routledge\, 2018)\, outlines a permaculture strategy for Africa and shows how projects can be designed to make this work in practice. \n\nAll events are sliding scale—choose the level at which you are able to contribute to The Marxist Education Project. A later date in 2022 will be found.\nby Isabelle Fremeaux and Jay Jordan\nChronicles the story of the ZAD (zone to defend)\, a resistant land occupation emerging out of a decades-long struggle which stopped a new airport project\nIn 2008\, as the storms of the financial crash blew\, Isabelle Fremeaux and Jay Jordan deserted the metropolis and their academic jobs\, traveling across Europe in search of post-capitalist utopias. They wanted their art activism to no longer be uprooted. They arrived at a place French politicians had declared lost to the republic\, otherwise known as the ZAD (the zone to defend): a messy but extraordinary canvas of commoning\, illegally occupying 4\,000 acres of wetlands where an international airport was planned. In 2018\, the 40-year-long struggle snatched an incredible victory\, defeating the airport expansion project through a powerful cocktail that merged creation and resistance. Fremeaux and Jordan blend rich eyewitness accounts with theory\, inspired by a diverse array of approaches\, from neo-animism to revolutionary biology\, insurrectionary writings and radical art history. \nThis event considers one of a number of books from the new Pluto Books Vagabonds series. SUMMARY:Dual Presentation: Community Restaurants with Benjamin Selwyn / Postcapitalism: Alternatives or Detour?
DESCRIPTION:Community Restaurants: Decommodifying Food as Socialist Strategy with Benjamin Selwyn \nThe outbreak of Covid-19 has exacerbated many of the system’s worst aspects. In the UK\, the birthplace of free wage-labor based capitalist agriculture\, the pandemic has exacerbated existing food inequities. The pandemic has stimulated discussions about how to remedy the world’s corporate-dominated food system. The most popular alternative visions propose shifting production and consumption away from meat increasingly to plant-based diets produced according to agro-ecological principles. While these approaches could be part of a broader solution\, until now they have tended to eschew explaining the food system’s inequities in class-relational terms. \nThis essay argues that the root problems of the contemporary food system are three-fold: (1) it is rooted in\, and depends upon\, the commodification of labour\, food\, and natural resources\n(including land); (2) that these commodities are subordinate to capitalism’s endless drive of exploitation-based accumulation; and (3) that the food system itself incorporates\, and\ncontributes to reproducing\, these dynamics throughout the wider capitalist system. Facilitating healthy\, increasingly plant-based diets should be part and parcel of a socialist agenda. \nWhat might an emergent alternative food system look like? How could it decommodify food inorder to reduce working class market dependence while enhancing working class health? How could it increase workers’ democratic control over its production\, distribution and consumption? How could it reduce race and gender inequalities? How could the construction of such an alternative system facilitate political alliance building amongst oppressed and exploited groups? How could it enable workers’ organizations to encroach upon the power of capital? This essay suggests that community restaurants\, serving free and cheap food\, represent a socialist demand that can fulfil the above criteria \nPost-Capitalism: Alternatives or Detours? with Greg Albo \nThe main political reference points in opposition to neoliberalism today – the constituent organizations of the Party of the European Left\, the platforms associated with the left coalitional Iberian governments\, the policy proposals that emerged from the British Labour Party under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn\, and the Bernie Sanders candidacy in the Democratic Party presidential primaries – converge in a common rejection of social democracy's political cynicism and economic agenda seeking a return to one or another variant of competitive corporatism. The characteristic programme has been along the lines of the annual Euro-Memorandum: an anti-austerity\, ‘Keynes-plus’ reversal of the economic policy regime of neoliberalism\, recalling the alternative economic strategies of the 1970s\, but now set within a far less ambitious transitional policy matrix. \nThere is\, however\, deep-seated scepticism toward any of these agendas among many of the most militant opponents of neoliberalism\, who have insisted on the importance of advancing a postcapitalist’ future. For them\, the necessary break from neoliberalism is too sharp\, and the disintegration of the historical institutions of the left too severe\, for a rehabilitation – at\nwhatever scale of intervention – of a more egalitarian growth model that would recall the productivism and bureaucracy of postwar Fordism. Yet a more determined anti-capitalist seizure of power\, occupation of the institutions of the state\, and a program of nationalization of the ‘commanding heights’ of the economy\, is even less convincing for them. What is needed for renewing an emancipatory politic is thus quite different\, and has been advanced in a variety of forms as projects for ‘post-capitalism’: in the construction of ‘real utopias’ offering new patterns of asset distribution and ownership ‘over work’; in the extension of practices of ‘commoning’ autonomous from the capitalist state and ‘apart from work’ as value production; and in the ‘acceleration’ of the pace of technological change toward ‘full automation’ to open up a ‘post-work’ social horizon. Such postcapitalist projects\, it is argued\, prefigure a more direct\, participatory democratic order as well as a more direct\, less state-dependent means of transcending value production. \nThe question is\, where exactly do these ‘real utopias’ of post-capitalism really take us? What openings do they suggest for the transformation of the economy and state necessary to sustain\nsocialism as ‘the real movement which abolishes the present state of things’? That is\, do they actually point beyond capitalism or rather offer a series of detours toward the renewal of a ‘mixed economy’ inside capitalism? \n

No one is turned away for inability to pay. Email info@marxedproject.org for zoom info if you are unable to pay \nThe birth and development of capitalism since its origins in the fifteenth century is entirely bound up with the subordination of racialized peoples. Even before capitalism arose – in a process Marx termed the “so-called primitive accumulation” – money and markets were implicated in the rise and fall of states and empires that conquered and enslaved vast numbers of human bodies. This group will address these histories and their persisting consequences. We will read and discuss David McNally’s Blood and Money: War\, Slavery\, Finance\, and Empire and Jairus Banaji’s The History of Commercial Capitalism\, both new works along with the now-classic text Black Marxism: The Making of the Black Radical Tradition by Cedric Robinson. Additional readings will include chapters from Marx’s Capital; essays by Robin D.G. Kelley and Barbara Fields; and selections from the July-August 2020 Monthly Review devoted to Racial Capitalism. \nThe CAPITAL STUDIES GROUP has been meeting on Saturdays for nearly four years. We are a group of workers\, students\, activists and teachers who have nearly completed a chronological reading all three volumes of Marx’s Capital along with other important works such as these sessions will explore. Newcomers are always encouraged to join. \n
