In Black History Is for Everyone\, Jones offers a meditation on the power of Black history\, using his own experiences as a lifelong learner and classroom teacher to question everything — from the radicalism of the American Revolution to the meaning of “race” and “nation.” With warmth and immersive storytelling\, Jones encourages us to delve deeper into our collective history\, explores how curiosity about our world is essential—and reminds us that with stakes so high\, the effort is worth it. \nBrian Jones has taught many ages and grades in New York City’s public schools and the City University of New York. He served as the inaugural director of the Center for Educators and Schools at the New York Public Library and was the associate director of education at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The author of The Tuskegee Student Uprising: A History\, his writing has also appeared in The New York Times\, the Guardian\, and Jacobin.

SUMMARY:Hubert Harrison: Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism
DESCRIPTION:A video of this November 8\, 2025\, event is available on the MEP’s YouTube channel. \nBrian Kwoba‘s recently published Hubert Harrison: Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism introduces the working-class journalist\, activist\, and educator Hubert Henry Harrison (1883-1927)\, who generated an array of visionary solutions to the systemic injustices of his day. After blazing a trail for Black workers and organizers in the Socialist Party of America and the Paterson Silk Strike of 1913\, Harrison emerged as the most prominent Black freethinker and free lover of his generation. He also practiced armed self-defense and called for an anti-capitalist\, anti-imperialist “Colored International” alliance in the face of European colonization in Africa\, Asia\, and Latin America. Most spectacularly\, Harrison’s Liberty League of Negro Americans catalyzed the rise of Marcus Garvey and the largest international organization of African people in modern history. Because of his fearless radicalism\, however\, the full scope of Harrison’s revolutionary legacy has been largely erased from popular memory … until now. \nDr. Brian Kwoba was born in Manchester\, Connecticut\, and raised in Boulder\, Colorado. After earning his undergraduate degree in philosophy at Cornell University\, he spent six years teaching high school and middle school history and social studies in Boston before heading to the University of Oxford for his doctoral degree in history. Dr. Kwoba is currently an associate professor of history and also the director of African and African American Studies at the University of Memphis. Over the past two decades\, Dr. Kwoba has been an activist on issues including anti-imperialism\, immigrant workers rights\, climate justice\, Falastin\, decolonizing education\, pan-Africanism\, and the movement for Black lives. SUMMARY:Exploring the Literature of Afro-Surrealism
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays\, 7-9 pm ET\,  beginning April 24 \nThis spring\, the MEP Literature Reading Group takes up novels loosely grouped as “Afro-Surrealism.” Borrowing from use by Amiri Baraka in the 1970s\, D. Scot Miller encouraged use of the term through his 2009 essay\, “Afrosurreal Manifesto.” Writers and artists in the African diaspora have now reclaimed the imaginative\, wondrous\, and contradictory aspects of Black life and artistic expression from the belittling slights of Western surrealists. We will read three novels contributing to this revival: \n\n Tram 83\, Fiston Mwanza Mujila\, on April 24 and May 1\nOreo\, by Fran Ross\, on May 8 and 22\nReady to Burst\, by Frankétienne\, May 29 and June 5\n\nConvened by Jacqueline Cantwell and the MEP Literature Reading Group. Jacqueline Cantwell became involved with the MEP’s Literature Group because of her love of Victor Serge’s  novels. Participating in an MEP reading group led by Serge translator Richard Greeman eight years ago\, Jacqueline found a community of readers eager to be challenged by the ambitions of international writers devoted to the creative potential of political fiction. Since the death of Michael Lardner\, who hosted and organized the Literature Group for so many years\, Jacqueline has taken the lead in furthering the group’s goals of exploring international fiction and encouraging thoughtful conversation. \nThe image used here accompanied the Fall 2013 publication of Miller’s essay in Black Camera\, based on artist and creative Sherese Francis’ 2012 illustration for Miller’s essay on Francis’ blog\, futuristically ancient.

SUMMARY:Imperialism: The Long View and the Big Picture
DESCRIPTION:Video introduction\nImperialism is an economic and political system of war and conquest by great powers\, but it is also the lived experience of the conquered and subjugated. This almost always entails the murder\, rape\, theft\, enslavement\, and myriad humiliations of the dominated and colonized. Empires have committed genocide\, eliminating entire peoples\, and ethnocide\, erasing the nationality\, language\, and culture of the conquered. And the conquered have resisted\, risen up\, rebelled\, and often succeeded at least for a time in escaping the grip of empires. Even so\, new imperial or neocolonial systems often reimpose their domination in new ways\, leading to further resistance and rebellion. \nIn eight weekly sessions guided by Dan La Botz\, we will look at imperialism in the long view\, from the ancient world to today. We will examine the experience of imperialism and the theoretical justifications for it\, as well as anti-imperialist movements and their arguments. We will look at imperialism as economic phenomenon\, as political strategy\, as cultural experience\, and as psychological affect. We will discuss imperialism and gender and imperialism and the environment. \nSee the initial syllabus for further details. \nDan La Botz is a retired historian of the United States and Latin America and a longtime political activist on the left. He holds a Ph.D. in U.S. History from the University of Cincinnati and has taught at several universities\, most recently in the City University of New York School of Labor and Urban Studies. He is the author of a dozen books and scores of journalistic and academic articles on labor movements\, social movements\, and politics in the United States\, Mexico\, Nicaragua\, and Indonesia. He is a co-editor of the journal New Politics.

Palm oil\, found in half of supermarket products\, has shaped our world. Max Haiven uncovers how the gears of capitalism are literally and metaphorically lubricated by this ubiquitous elixir. With a sweeping\, experimental narrative\, Haiven takes us on a global journey that includes looted treasures\, the American system of mass incarceration\, the history of modern art and the industrialisation of war. Beyond simply calling for more consumer boycotts\, Haiven argues for recognising in palm oil humanity’s profound potential to shape our world beyond racial capitalism and neo-colonial dispossession. \nMax Haiven is a writer and teacher and Canada Research Chair in Culture\, Media and Social Justice. His most recent books are Art after Money\, Money after Art: Creative Strategies Against Financialization (2018) and Revenge Capitalism: The Ghosts of Empire\, the Demons of Capital\, and the Settling of Unpayable Debts (2020). Max also edits VAGABONDS\, a series of short\, radical books from Pluto Press. He teaches at Lakehead University\, where he co-directs the ReImagining Value Action Lab (RiVAL).

Robinson argued that Black radicalism must be linked to the traditions of Africa and the unique experiences of Blacks on western continents. Analyses of African-American history need to acknowledge this; from the time of the early formation of a world bourgeoisie\, to the African diaspora\, to the Atlantic slave trade\, to the 20th Century. Robinson’s text also addresses the work and legacies of C.L.R. James\, W.E.B. Dubois\, and Richard Wright in their anticapitalist positions and their contributions to and conflicts with Western Marxism. Convened by William Stroud and Peter Wilson.

DESCRIPTION:Convened with Fred Murphy\, Gerardo Rénique and Gunnett Kaaf\nA reading group to celebrate and reflect on two classic works of anti-imperialist writing first published fifty years ago but with an ongoing worldwide impact: Eduardo Galeano’s Open Veins of Latin America (1971) and Walter Rodney’s How Europe Underdeveloped Africa (1972). Extending our scope to Asia and bringing matters up to the present day\, we will conclude by reading Amitav Ghosh’s just-published The Nutmeg’s Curse: Parables for a Planet in Crisis. These discussions will be led by Gerardo Rénique and Fred Murphy\, joined by Gunnett Kaaf for the Africa sessions and consideration of Walter Rodney’s study. \nGerardo Rénique taught history for many years at the City College of New York. He is a frequent contributor to Socialism and Democracy and NACLA: Report on the Americas. His research interests include the political traditions of popular movements in Latin America\, and race\, national identity and state formation in Mexico. \nFred Murphy has led numerous study groups on Latin America\, ecosocialism\, and related topics at the Marxist Education Project since 2015. He studied and taught Latin American history at the New School for Social Research.
