SUMMARY:Historical-Materialist Psychology: Vygotsky's Contribution
DESCRIPTION:Carl Ratner presents a new edition of this six-week series\, in which we seek to solve the riddle Marx posed in his first thesis on Feuerbach: “in contradistinction to materialism\, the active side [the subjective side of human behavior] was developed abstractly by idealism – which\, of course\, does not know real\, sensuous activity as such.” Exploring a materialist theory of subjectivity which does know sensuous activity\, we will see how historical materialism can be extended to reveal how it is compatible with psychology and how human psychology is itself a historical-materialist phenomenon. \nThe most sophisticated approach to historical-materialist psychology was developed by the Russian psychologist\, Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934)\, who formulated a “cultural-historical psychological theory.” This was a comprehensive psychological theory that encompassed child development\, adolescence\, cognition\, perception\, personality/self. Read more… \nCarl Ratner went through college and graduate school in the 1960s. He was a professor of social psychology in the California State University system for 31 years. He adopted Vygotsky’s work when it was first translated in the 1980s\, writing extensively on Vygotsky and authoring the Preface to vol. 5 of his Collected Works. Ratner was one of the few followers of Vygotsky who emphasized his Marxist orientation and developed it. Ratner is the author of Macro Cultural Psychology: A Political Philosophy of Mind (Oxford\, 2012); his most recent book is Cultural Psychology\, Racism\, and Social Justice (Springer\, 2022). Carl has been active in the cooperative movement and served on the board of directors of California’s largest food coop in the 1970s and 80s. He lived in China from 1981-1983 and taught the first course on social psychology in Peking University since it had been banned after the Revolution.

SUMMARY:The Works of Henri Lefebvre: Four Lectures
DESCRIPTION:We introduce the work of French Marxist theorist Henri Lefebvre through four monthly lectures presented by cultural studies scholar Iván Zatz-Díaz. \nLecture 1—October 11\nMetaphilosophy: This introduction to Lefebvre’s work presents a framework to situate the overarching purpose of his thought as a form of political activism. Metaphilosophy sets an intent to move the act of thinking beyond itself and towards the living world\, beyond formal philosophy and sociology and towards the transformative. A brief look at Lefebvre’s work on Modernism\, Hegel\, Marx\, and Nietzsche will provide further context. \nLecture 2—November 15\nCritique of Everyday Life is Lefebvre’s overarching project from the immediate aftermath of WWII until his death in 1990. Volume 1 (1947) looks at Marx’s concept of alienation as a central explanation of life under capitalism. Volume 2 (1961) aims to set the path for a sociological analysis of late capitalist alienation. A brief account of his analysis of the French events of May-June 1968 will complete the presentation of this initial phase of the Critique. \nLecture 3—December 6\nThe Production of Space is Lefebvre’s best-known work in English and the reason he is often viewed reductively as an urban studies theorist\, especially in the United States. This presentation will approach the book rather as metaphilosophy\, highlighting its politically transformative intent. We will also address other Lefebvre writings on cities as an integral part of his look at everyday life. \nLecture 4—January 10\nCritique vol. 3 and Rhythmanalysis: In the last decade of his life\, Lefebvre returned to the Critique of Everyday Life in order to confront the imbrication of new technologies with the alienated life of latter-day capitalism. Rhythmanalysis\, his final work\, incorporates time into the analysis of everyday life\, particularly in the form of street rhythms seen from his window or observed in the spaces of Mediterranean cities. \nIván Zatz-Díaz is a retired Professor of Cultural Studies at Pratt Institute in New York City. He has been a resident of three cities: Mexico City (by birth and upbringing)\, New York City (for much more than half his life)\, and Madrid (for the past two years and counting).

SUMMARY:Highlights of Capital Volume III: The Automatic Fetish
DESCRIPTION:Volume III of Marx’s Capital – The Process of Capitalist Production as a Whole – integrates and completes Marx’s analysis\, enabling us to understand and make sense of how the phenomena we see occurring on the surface of society are related to the underlying system of capitalism. It is essential to understanding the current moment of late capitalist/imperialist development\, in which we see the rise of rentier and finance capital and the commodification of debt; continuously rising prices that bring still more poverty and starvation; new technologies turned into means of extracting rents; the privatization of public spaces\, properties and institutions; and the list goes on. \nIn this series of ten weekly sessions\, we will be guided through the key concepts in Capital III using Beverley Best’s highly praised companion volume\, The Automatic Fetish: The Law of Value in Marx’s Capital. \nFred Murphy will facilitate this group. Since 2015 Fred has led numerous MEP study groups on ecosocialism\, science and technology\, the history of capitalism\, and Latin American politics. He studied and taught historical sociology at the New School for Social Research and reported from Latin America for several socialist publications.

SUMMARY:Planetary Crises: 'Anthropocene Communism'
DESCRIPTION:Next monthly session October 21\nThe MEP’s Ecosocialist Study Group meets monthly to discuss important new works on the science and politics of the climate emergency\, the nature of economic and ecological crises\, and related topics. On October 21 we will consider Anthropocene Communism: Land and Capital in the Age of Disaster\, by Paul Guillibert. \nIn Anthropocene Communism\, the philosopher and activist Paul Guillibert proposes a new communism to move us beyond the ecological crisis of late capitalism. In a highly original reading of Karl Marx’s exchanges with Russian populists\, and informed by the cultural studies of Raymond Williams\, the José Carlos Mariátegui\, and Ernst Bloch\, Guillibert develops a philosophical naturalism that rethinks our relations with the environment. For Guillibert\, if we are to move beyond the Anthropocene\, we must develop new strategies. Communism must become environmentalism\, and political ecology can only become truly revolutionary once it is communist. \nOther recent books of interest to this group are listed here. \nFacilitated by Fred Murphy. SUMMARY:Hegel for Radicals: On Art and Literature
DESCRIPTION:The End of History is here! So proclaimed Francis Fukuyama in the 1990’s\, following the disintegration of the Soviet Union. In the 1960’s the philosopher and art critic Arthur C. Danto proclaimed The End of Art\, noting the ascendancy of Andy Warhol’s pop art. The idea can also be traced back to the early years of the 20th century with Marcel Duchamp\, Dadaism\, and Cubism.  \nThe genesis of both concepts\, The End of History and the End of Art are credited to Hegel.  \nThe MEP’s recurring series Hegel for Radicals resumes with a seminar on Hegel’s Lectures on Aesthetics where we will study his understanding of art and literature. We will read the Introduction and several selected sections from the body of the lectures. As in virtually every area which he investigated\, Hegel brought about a revolution in the way we think of art and literature. He anticipated the development of modernism before it arrived\, as well as the enigmas raised by postmodernism. Agree with Hegel or not\, it is no exaggeration to say that all contemporary discourse about art and literature takes his work as its point of departure.  \nThis class series begins on October 31 and will introduce what is living in Hegel for those who want to change the world. Our goal is to make Hegel’s dialectic less mysterious as we go along and try to tease out the revolutionary implications in his thought and its significance for our time. Previous classes in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit\, The Science of Logic and/or The Philosophy of Right will be helpful but are not a requirement for this class. Every participant in the class will be expected to make at least one presentation during the semester. \nAlex Steinberg is the facilitator of Hegel for Radicals. He is an independent scholar who has taught and published on topics such as the philosophy of Heidegger and Nazism\, Marxism and humanism\, Hegel’s philosophy of history and Hegel’s Phenomenology at various alternative educational institutions. Alex has also been involved with the governance of WBAI radio in New York and its parent organization\, Pacifica\, most recently as the Chair of the Pacifica National Board from 2020-2022.
