This reading and watching study will meet each Thursday to look at the continually contested terrain and the peoples on both sides of the borders of the U.S. and Mexican nations and the indigenous peoples who had and have nothing to say in the placement of these borderlines. Together, we will read and discuss two studies, Border Bandits by Camilla Fojas and Borderlands/La Frontera by Gloria Anzaldúa along with two novels, Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian and T.C. Boyle’s Tortilla Curtain. We will also read Alejandro Lugo’s essay “Reflections on Border Theory, Culture, and the Nation”. The films tobe viewed include El Mariachi, Red River, and El Norte.
